1 A checklist of arthropods associated with rat carrion in a montane locality of northern Venezuela. Apartado Postal 21827, Caracas 1020-A, Venezuela Tel.: +58-212-504.1052; fax: +58-212-504.1088; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract This is the first report of arthropods associated with carrion in Venezuela, using laboratory bred rats (Rattus norvegicus). Rat carcasses were exposed to colonization by arthropods in neighboring montane savanna and cloud forest habitats in the state of Miranda. The taxonomic composition of the arthropods varied between both ecosystems. Scarabaeidae, Silphidae, Micropezidae, Phoridae, Vespidae and one species of ant, were collected only in the cloud forest. Dermestes maculatus, Chrysomya albiceps, Termitidae and most species of ants, were found only in the savanna. Fourteen species were considered to be of primary forensic importance: Dermestes maculatus, Oxelytrum discicolle, Calliphora sp., Cochliomyia macellaria, Compsomyiops sp., Chrysomya albiceps, Phaenicia cuprina, P. sericata, P. eximia, Fannia sp., Puliciphora sp., Megaselia scalaris, Ravina sp. and Sarcophaga sp. Introduction There is relatively little information available regarding insects associated with animal carrion and human corpses in South America [1]. In Brazil, Moura et al. [2] made a preliminary analysis of the insects of medico-legal importance in Curitiba, in the state of 2 Paraná; Carvalho et al. [3] identified arthropods associated with pig carrion and human corpses in Campinas, in the state of São Paulo. Recently, forensic entomology was applied to estimate the postmortem interval (PMI) in homicide investigations by the Rio de Janeiro Police Department, Brasil [4]. -

REVISION OF THE TWO-WINGED FLIES OF THE FAMILY CLUSIIDAE. By A. L. Melander and Naomi George Argo, Of the State College of Washington, Pullman. The family Clusiidae, sometimes called the Heteroneuridae or the Clusiodidae, is generally regarded as one of the rarer groups of the Diptera. Seldom are its members met with in more than solitary individuals. In our experience in collecting a hundred thousand specimens of Diptera but a few dozen representatives of Clusiidae have been encountered. Previously there have been described from the entire world 13 valid genera and 55 species. Aldrich's Catalogue in 1905 listed but 2 genera and 12 species as known from North America. The sub- sequent publications of Johnson and Malloch have added 11 recog- nized new species to the American list. Fifteen species have been described from Europe and the same number from South America, while four species have been recorded from the islands south of Asia. The material secured for the present study, amounting to some 400 specimens, has produced 52 species, of which 25 are new. With the extension in distribution of species originally described from Europe or South America there are now known to occur in North America, including Central America, a total of 58 species belonging to 7 genera. Thus in its present status the family includes 80 recognized species distributed among 13 genera. The Clusiidae are restricted in their distribution to Europe, North and South America, and the East Indies. No species have been described from Africa, Australia, or Asia, but there is mention by Lefroy of the occurrence of an undetermined species in India. -

Hitherto, the Paleogene fossil genus Acartophthalmites Hennig, 1965 included only the type species, A. tertiaria Hennig, 1965, from Baltic amber (Eocene, ca. 40 Mya). An additional species, Acartophthalmites clusioides sp. nov., is described based on a well preserved male in a Baltic amber inclusion from Kaliningrad: Yantarny (Russia). It distinctly differs from A. tertiaria in a number of characters demonstrating that the genus Acartophthalmites is mor- phologically more diverse than considered previously. Moreover, the study of A. clusioides resulted in fi nding that Acartophthalmites is obviously not related to Acartophthalmidae (where it was originally affi liated), but seems to be closer to Clusiidae, although surely not belonging to the latter family as currently delimited. Therefore a revision of all available specimens of Acartophthalmites is suggested to gain a more complete set of morphological data of this genus, enabling analysis of its phylogenetic relationships. E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract Two hundred and ninety-six rearing records of 11 clusiid species (Diptera, Clusiidae) were obtained from 8 tree species in England, Finland, France, Norway, Russia and Scotland, mainly during the period 1994 to 2004. Larvae and puparia were found between annual layers of whitewood (sapwood and heartwood) of wet, decay-softened, dead wood. Levels of host tree specificity were low, most species were reared from 2–4 host trees, maximum 6. The clusiid larva is distinguished by: a small, translucent head skeleton with an obliquely-shaped apex to the artium; a pseudocephalon fixed in an inverted position except for an external, flattened section bearing the antennomaxillary organs; a spherical prothorax with a truncate rim embedded with sensilla and, a wedge-shaped anal segment bearing a pair of conspicuous, sclerotised, red- brown hooks on the inner margins of which are the posterior spiracular plates. Many of these features support a distinctive feeding mechanism, spot-sucking of biofilm coating wet, decaying whitewood. Early stage characters support the results of recent supraspecific taxonomic and systematic investigations, such as the synonymy of Paraclusia Czerny under Clusia Haliday and the recognition of species groups in Clusiodes Coquillett. -

Interesting Diptera Collected in Indiana Walnut Groves D. W. Hamilton, Entomology Research Division, Agric. Res. Serv., U.S.D.A., Vincennes, Indiana Bait traps, designed to capture Rhagoletis simvis (Loew), an economic pest of walnuts, were placed in a grove of black walnuts (Juglans nigra) on the Glen Berry farm near Monroe City, Indiana, during 1960, 1961, and 1962, to evaluate the relative effectiveness of a series of ammoniacal compounds as attractants for Rhagoletis spp. Six species of flies that could be confused with R. suavis were also captured and records made as to the dates they were captured and in what numbers. 1 Discovery of a heavy infestation of R. suavis in a small grove of Persian walnut (Juglans regia), Carpathian strain, on the Alvin Spitts property near Vincennes, Indiana, made it possible to evaluate the effect of bait sprays for control of this fly. The purpose of this dis- cussion is to record the species and numbers taken, especially with reference to R. suavis, and to comment briefly on the injury caused by R. suavis, and the control obtained with bait sprays. The traps used for exposing the lures, designed after those described by Still (17), were sheltered half-pint jars of bait suspended below 6- x 8-inch pieces of yellow masonite, coated with Stikem.2 Baits were emptied and replenished when deemed necessary, generally at 24- to 34- day intervals. In the Berry grove the traps were hung at 6-foot intervals on a plastic rope suspended about 7 feet from the ground and connecting four black walnut trees spaced about 50 feet apart, in an approximate square. -

Opomyzoidea includes one large family (Agromyzidae, the leaf-mining flies, with over 3000 described species) and more than a dozen small families. The exact number of recognized families varies.
