Observações sobre a ocorrência de Mosca-Negra- dos-Citros, Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby, 1915 (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Aleyrodidae) no estado do Amazonas Beatriz RONCHI-TELES1, Marcia Reis PENA2, Neliton Marques SILVA3 RESUMO A mosca-negra-dos-citros (Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby) é uma importante praga dos citros de origem asiática. Foi detectada no Brasil pela primeira vez em Belém-PA em 2001. Este trabalho tem como objetivo registrar a ocorrência de mosca-negra-dos- citros no estado do Amazonas, sua distribuição geográfica e estudos de biologia em condições de laboratório. A mosca-negra encontra-se atualmente disseminada em mais da metade dos municípios paraenses. No Amazonas foi detectada em junho de 2004 em Manaus e atualmente encontra-se disseminada em toda a área urbana deste município, ocorrendo também em Itacoatiara, Rio Preto da Eva e Iranduba. Em observações feitas em condições de laboratório em Manaus-AM, foi verificado que o ciclo de ovo-adulto foi de 71,76±2,07 dias, caracterizando como uma espécie multivoltina. Of Monsters and Mothers: Representations of Motherhood in ‘Alien’

Of Monsters and Mothers: Representations of Motherhood in ‘Alien’ Released in 1979, director Ridley Scott’s film Alien is renowned as one of the few science fiction films that surpasses most horror films in its power to terrify an audience. The film centers on the crew of the spaceship ‘Nostromo’, and how the introduction of an unknown alien life form wreaks havoc on the ship. The eponymous Alien individually murders each member of the crew, aside from the primary antagonist Ripley, who manages to escape. Interestingly, the film uses subtle representations of motherhood in order to create a truly scary effect. These representations are incredibly interesting to study, as they tie in to various existing archetypes surrounding motherhood and the concept of the ‘monstrous feminine’. In her essay ‘Alien and the Monstrous Feminine’, Barbara Creed discusses the various notions that surround motherhood. First, she writes about the “ancient archaic figure who gives birth to all living things” (Creed 131). Essentially, she discusses the great mother figures of the mythologies of different cultures—Gaia, Nu Kwa, Mother Earth (Creed 131). These characters embody the concept that mothers are nurturing, loving, and caring. Traditionally, stories, films, and other forms of material reiterate and r mothers in this nature. However, there are many notable exceptions to this representation. For example, the primary antagonist in many Brothers Grimm stories are the evil step-mother, a character completely devoid of the maternal warmth and nurturing character of the traditional mother. In Hindu mythology, the goddess Kali is worshipped as the mother of the universe. -

GUIDANCE FOR CONSERVING OREGON’S NATIVE TURTLES INCLUDING BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES the OREGON CONSERVATION STRATEGY the intent of this document is to facilitate better protection and conservation of oregon’s native turtles and their habitats. This document includes recommended Best Management Practices (BMPs) for protecting and conserving Oregon’s two native turtle species, the western painted turtle and the western pond turtle. While there are opportunities for all Oregonians to become more knowledgeable about and participate in turtle conservation efforts, this document is intended primarily for use by natural resource and land managers, land use planners, and project managers. The document has been peer-reviewed and the BMPs are supported by scientifically sound information. The BMPs are intended to be practical and cost-effective so that they can be readily used. Adherence to these BMPs does not necessarily constitute compliance with all applicable federal, state, or local laws. A. citrina is morphologically very similar to the Californian red scale, Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell), and was considered to be a variety until Nel (1933) raised it to specific level based on a comparative study of their ecology, biology and morphology. The main hosts of economic importance are Citrus spp., especially oranges (C. sinensis), but the insect is also recorded incidentally on a wide range of ornamentals and some fruit crops including Acacia, bananas (Musa paradisiaca), Camellia including tea (C. sinensis), Clematis, Cucurbitaceae, Eucalyptus, Euonymus, guavas (Psidium guajava), Hedera helix, Jasminum, Ficus, Ligustrum, Magnolia, mangoes (Mangifera indica), Myrica, olives (Olea europea), peaches (Prunus persica), poplars (Populus), Rosa, Schefflera actinophylla, Strelitzia reginae, Viburnum and Yucca. Myartseva & Enrique Ruíz- Cancino Accepted: 23-07-2013 ABSTRACT Aphelinidae is one of the most important families in biological control of insect pests at a worldwide level. The following catalogue of the Iranian fauna of Aphelinidae includes a list of all genera and species recorded for the country, their distribution in and outside Iran, and known hosts in Iran. In total 138 species from 11 genera (Ablerus, Aphelinus, Aphytis, Coccobius, Coccophagoides, Coccophagus, Encarsia, Eretmocerus, Marietta, Myiocnema, Pteroptrix) are listed as the fauna of Iran. Aphelinus semiflavus Howard, 1908 and Coccophagoides similis (Masi, 1908) are new records for Iran. Key words: Hymenoptera, Chalcidoidea, Aphelinidae, Catalogue. To evaluate the population dynamics of P. flagellata, monthly samples were collected from Guerrero Lagoon (Yucatán Peninsula) from June 2012 to May 2013. The measured environmental variables did not differ significantly among the sampling stations. However, salinity was lower during the rainy season, and the temperature was lower during the north season (i.e., the season dominated by cold fronts). The snails were more abundant during the rainy season, and they were restricted to the portion of the lagoon that receives freshwater discharges. The snails ranged from 4 to 55 mm in size, with a –1 maximum estimated length of L∞ = 57.75 mm and a growth rate of K = 0.68 y (the abbreviation “y” means “year”) with a seasonal oscillation; the lowest growth rate occurred in early December. -

In this study, clinical profiles of patients presented with epidemic dropsy in north India are described. Methods: This was a prospective study of patients presented with epidemic dropsy to the emergency department of Nehru Hospital, during the period from March 2004 to December 2011. Inclusion criteria were patients presenting with tender bilateral pitting leg edema and dermal telangiectasia. Clinical and laboratory data of patients were entered into case record forms at the time of presentation until discharge from the hospital. Results: Leg edema was the principal symptom in our series, and was in concurrence with current literature. Erythema has only been reported in 35-82% of published series, though it was present in all of our patients. Similarly, features such as diarrhea, hepatomegaly and anemia were more frequent in our cases compared to the literature. Furthermore, pancytopenia which was documented on peripheral blood counts in 54% of our cases has never been reported before. Conclusion: Epidemic dropsy should be considered in patients presenting with progressive erythema, edema, and tenderness of the limbs who had a history of consumption of mustard oil and confirmation of Argemone oil contamination according to laboratory tests. -
