State St. · Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1003 734-764-4311 · [email protected] · http://www.lsa.umich.edu/cgis _____________________________ ITALIAN STUDIES IN ROME, ITALY COURSE DESCRIPTIONS SUMMER 2014 Professor Giorgio Bertellini (U-M Department of Screen Arts and Cultures/Romance Languages and Literatures) When in Rome: Italian Cinema and Its Capital Movie Set, 3 credits The history of Italian cinema has consistently drawn from the representation of Rome as Italy’s center of political power, artistic culture, and public morality—or lack thereof. The very first Italian fiction film, La presa di Roma (The Capture of Rome, 1905), told the story of the 1871 military occupation of the Papal State’s capital by the army of the newly-formed Italian state. The film’s narrative projected onto the “eternal city” two main power strands, one affiliated with the new State, the other with the timeless Vatican. In various ways, the apparent conflict and much more frequent intersections of these civic cultures (and their contrasting claims over public morality) have continued to affect Italian film culture. Films about the Vatican and the Pope abounded in the silent period, but paled in comparison with the notable historical epics (i.e., Spartacus, 1911; Quo Vadis?, 1913) that helped launching Italian cinema onto the world’s film stage before WWI and gave visual support to an incipient nationalism. After the 1922 “March on Rome,” Mussolini sought to impose the image of Rome as a state and imperial capital and downplay its previous fame as the center of the Church. -

These long twelve years to help us better understand the preparatory stages and the political effects that lead Italy to sign the agreements of the Triple Alliance. The politicians of taking an attitude almost detached, compared to the problems of the armed forces. In the financial crisis. The economic and social backwardness is manifested when we compare with other European countries. The problem that the Italian government has had to deal with the aftermath of Sedan, is transformation of the Italian army under the Prussian model. Preamble Durante i dodici anni che separano la presa di Roma dalla stipulazione della Triplice alleanza, l’esercito italiano subisce profonde trasformazioni, come la politica del neo Stato unitario, ricca di colpi di scena e prodiga nel catapultarsi sul palcoscenico internazionale. Il morale dei militari italiani alla vigilia degli anni ’70 dell’800 è sfiduciato, apatia e delusione serpeggiano tra i soldati. I fallimenti del 1866 mantengono vive le polemiche sugli insuccessi di Custoza e Lissa (Scotti, 2004), destinate a riemergere, nei dibattiti in Parlamento, ogni qualvolta si discute circa i progetti di riordinamento dell’esercito (Venosta, 1866). -

ISSN 2039-2117 (online) Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences Vol 6 No 6 S2 ISSN 2039-9340 (print) MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy November 2015 Italy and Neutrality: Cultural, Political and Diplomatic Framework Andrea Carteny Sapienza University of Rome Email: [email protected] Doi:10.5901/mjss.2015.v6n6s2p737 Abstract Italian history at the beginning of WWI was well harmonised with other events in the Old Continent, while the domestic picture featured a delicate set of links, between Triplicist, neutralist, and nationalist environments, parties and movements, with "nationalism" acting as a shaping factor in Italy's public scene. But different elements emerged in Italian nationalism that would grow into the interventionist policy of an aspiring “great power”, interpreted by some as a line of continuity between liberal and fascist foreign policy. The period of neutrality and the events that led to Italy's intervention were in the spotlight of historiographical analysis in the post-war years, with both focus on fascist Italy's non-belligerance at the surge of WWII and special attention to documentation and the strategies of protagonists (e.g. Giolitti, Salandra, di San Giuliano, Sonnino, D’Annunzio, etc.), as well as to careful reconstruction of events the growing consensus for intervention, the personalisation of stances for and against intervention, the many elements at play within and outside the country and the clever combination of popular mobilisation and parliamentary strategy by supporters of intervention in the weeks between the Treaty of London and war. The goal of the paper is to present the evolution of the Italian position from neutrality to the intervention in the war alongside the Entente, with a particular attention to international context, to the protagonist of the neutrality period in Italy through the memories and the main historiography on the subject. -

Sia che si sottolineino le opportunità o le condizioni, le reazioni degli individui o quelle dei gruppi, è evidente che nella società capitalistica le opportunità o le condizioni oggettive agiscono tramite l’attività imprenditoriale, la cui analisi costituisce come minimo un importante indirizzo per lo studio dei mutamenti economici nell’epoca capitalistica, il che è compatibile con l’esistenza di opinioni profondamente diverse circa la sua importanza come “causa ultima”. Visto in questa luce, l’imprenditore e la sua funzione non sono difficili da concettualizzare; la caratteristica che lo definisce è data semplicemente dal fare cose nuove o dal fare cose già fatte in modo nuovo (innovazione). Per sottrarvisi richiedono al governo ogni specie di protezione: protezione contro la concorrenza dei paesi stranieri; protezione contro gli operai (scioperi, associazioni operaie, ecc.); protezione mediante l’alterazione delle monete; protezione contro i possessori di risparmio, il governo provvedendo a conceder prestiti ad un saggio minore di quello che si determina liberamente sul mercato; protezione per i trasporti per terra e per via acqua; sovvenzioni marittime; premi, ecc., ecc. Ogni governo, che accorda tali protezioni, impedisce agli «imprenditori» di assolvere la loro funzione sociale. Diva: Early Film Culture and Image Theory in Italy

Mater Dolorosa A “diva” is the most important woman singer, the prima donna on the stage of opera, but this word can also describe an arrogant or temperamental woman. Close to the English word divine, “diva” means goddess, while the label “diva” competes for the spotlight with God, the ultimate divine maker of stars. Whereas God coincides with eternity, stars live and die. The point here is that the word diva strives for timelessness and infinity. By contrast, the word star is about someone special or exceptional or super-human (1), but not comparable to a divinity. In her best moments, the diva involves a certain kind of ineffable spirituality, ritualistic otherness, and an intuitive aura about transcendence. In short, the diva is an anomalous “star” in comparison to the Hollywood model which has defined film stardom for the rest of the world. The diva’s unusual contribution to the history of stardom stems from the cultural specificities of Italian modernity. In early Italian cinema, “diva” meant female star in a “long” feature film of at least sixty minutes, with some close- ups for the heroine and a fairly static use of the camera. The 12 point-of-view shot and the shot reverse shot, two basic features of classical American cinema, did not exist in the Italian films made between 1913 and 1918. However, the point-of-view shot begins to appear around 1919 or 1920 in diva-films. The three most famous divas of this period were Francesca Bertini (1892-1985), Lyda Borelli (1887-1959), and Pina Menichelli (1890-1984). -
