Teori

This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (signature) ......................................................................................... 1 ABSTRACT This research studies the theology of those Wahhabis who have now named themselves Salafis. For the purpose of the study, they are referred to as the ‘Wahhabis-self-named- Salafis’ (WSNS). The thesis starts with the observation that the WSNS are usually studied from a political perspective, much less frequently a theological one. Recent research has identified that the theological background of all the different factions of the WSNS is one and the same. This is true for the WSNS who advocate a peaceful way to achieve their goals, as well as those who do not. This thesis aims to explore some of the theological issues that unify these factions. This research demonstrates that, because the WSNS are opposed to the very concept of interpretation of the Qur’an and the hadith, especially when these texts deal with important theological issues such as the Attributes of God, they have developed a vision of Islamic history which is entirely different from the one which had traditionally been accepted by most Muslim scholars and Western academics.

Inheriting the rule from the Almohads, the Marinids were regarded as a strong and formidable Islamic government which once ruled the entire Maghreb and parts of al-Andalus at the height of its glory. Not unlike previous Muslim governments, the Marinid Kingdom also faced various problems and went through several conflicts which affected its stability and integrity. In fact the conflicts even caused the demise of the Marinid Kingdom in the year 1465 which saw the emergence of the Wattasids.

SANKORE' Institute of Islamic - African Studies International www.siiasi.org ! " ! Kitaab’ ţ-Ţahaara (The Book of Purification) 1 On What Has Been Related Regarding Purification Being Half of Belief It has been related in the Saheeh of Muslim on the authority of Abu Malik al- Harith ibn `Aasim al-Ash`ari 2 who said that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace said: “Purity is half of belief.” 3 1 The phrase ‘purification’ ( tahaara ) with the taa inflected with fat’ha it means cleansing oneself (tatahh iru ). As for the phrase ‘purifying agent’ ( tuhaara ) with the letter taa inflected with damma it is the water or earth with which purification is performed. As for the phrase ‘detergent’ ( tihaara ) with the taa inflected with kasra , it is what is added to that for cleansing such as soap and its like. The author began with the Chapter of Purification after Belief because it is the key to prayer which is the greatest of the principles of Islam after the two testimonies of the Divine Unity. For purification is a noun which stands in the place of cleansing oneself with water: such as cleansing the private parts with water; ablution, the ritual bath and other than these. Shaykh Abdullahi ibn Fuduye` said in his Diya `Uluum’d-Deen : “The stages of purification are four: the first is purification of the outward from impurities and filth; the second is purification of the limbs from offenses; the third is purification of the heart from blameworthy characteristics; and the fourth is purification of the secret from everything besides Allah.

  • Imam Al-Shatibi: the Master Architect of Maqasid Abu Ishaq Ibrahim B
Imam al-Shatibi: The Master Architect of Maqasid Abu Ishaq Ibrahim b. Musa b. Muhammad al-Lakhmi al-Shatibi was among the greatest scholars of al-Andalus – modern day Spain and Portugal, and one of the brightest Maliki scholars. According to most of the authentic reports on Imam al-Shatibi, his early life has not been recorded in detail. This could be due to the fact that he was not born in a wealthy or a renowned family of scholars, for which such records could have been available. One may, however, deduce from his name that his ancestors came from the Lakhmi tribe of Arabia, and probably migrated to al-Andalus. Although many have mistakenly mentioned his birth and early life to be in Shatiba (Xativa or Jativa), authentic reports about the great Imam confirm that he was neither born nor had ever lived there. His immediate ancestors might have moved to Granada from Shatiba few decades before his birth. The last record of Muslim settlement in Shatiba before it fell to Christian rule was in 645H/1247CE, at least eight to nine decades prior to his birth, thus him being born and raised up in there is certainly impossible. Ahmad al-Raisuni, a contemporary Moroccan scholar who wrote on Imam al-Shatibi’s theory of maqasid in his Nazriyyat al-Maqasid ‘Ind al-Imam al-Shatibi, mentions about the two earliest biographies of the Imam available to us. One of these was written by his student Abu Abdullah al-Majari (d. 862H/1458CE) in his Barnamij al-Majari (Majari’s Scheme), and the second is by Ahmad Baba al-Timbukti (d.

  • State and Civilization Under the Syro-Egyptian Ayyubids (1171-1250)
STATE AND CIVILIZATION UNDER THE SYRO-EGYPTIAN AYYUBIDS (1171-1250) ABSTRACT THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF ottor of piiilo^aplip IN ISL4MIC STUDIES BY DARAKHSHAN ANJUM Under the Superrision of Prof. Abdul Ali DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC STUDIES ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2002 IT J < \f JAii •'«) "Univeii'^^-' 0^ JUL 2003. It is a historical fact that the decline of the Abbasid Caliphate in the Arab East gave rise to numerous major and minor dynasties in the medieval Arab World. Some of these dynasties generously patronised and carried on the traditions of Arab-Islamic learning and culture on a wide scale, thereby maintaining a continuity in Muslim contributions to the development of science and civilization. But it is a matter of regret that while comparatively sufficient work has been done on various aspects of the intellectual and cultural heritage of the Muslims under the Abbasids, the contributions made by these lesser dynasties have not yet been studied and analysed. The Syro-Egyptian Ayyubid rulers (1171-1250) were one such brilliant dynasty whose rise to power was a major event in the history of the middle East in general and in that of the Muslim world in particular. It would be no exaggeratioft to say that but for heroic role played by the Ayyubids, the Crusaders might otherwise have permanently settled in Muslim Asia with disastrous consequences not only for the Muslim world, but also for other nations of Asia including the Indian sub-continent. Educated and cultured themselves, the Ayyubid rulers were also efficient administrators and magnificent patrons of learning, due to which both Egypt and Syria witnessed under them a resurgence in educational, intellectual and artistic activity.

EUROPE A LITERARY HISTORY, 1348 - 1418 Volume II Edited by DAVID WALLACE OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS Chapter 55 Granada RYAN SZPIECH ONE night in the spring of 13 75 in Fes, Morocco, medieval Granada's most eminent writer, Ibn al-Khatib, was strangled in prison. This inglorious end came after he had lived for a number of years in Morocco as a fugitive from his rivals in the Na~rid kingdom of Granada, including the jurist al-Nubahi (al-Bunnahi) and the poet Ibn Zamrak, his former student. When political upheaval among the Marinids of Morocco left him without protection, these rivals were summoned to Fes by his local enemies and Ibn al-Khatib was put on trial for heresy. He resisted confession despite being tortured, but doubts remained about his guilt. After he was sent back to prison, apparently to await further deliberations, some hired men broke into his cell and murdered him. 1 Although the charges seem to have been trumped up, this was not the first time that Ibn al-Khatib had been at odds with local authorities. One of his unconventional teachings, which opposed the common view of most jurists, was of particular historical import: his outspoken stance on the plague in his brief treatise The Convincing of the Questioner Regarding the Appalling Illness (Muqni'at al-sa'il 'an al-maraq al-ha'il), written in 1349· This work was one of various such treatises written in Granada, including a work by his contemporary, the Granadan doctor and poet Ibn Khatima al-An~ari, from Almeria (d.

  • Hadith Al Thaqalayn
Chapter 1 Preface The Messenger of Allah - may Allah bestow peace and bene- dictions upon him and his Progeny - said: "Verily, I am leaving behind two precious things (thaqalayn) among you: the Book of God and my kindred (`itrah), my household (Ahl alBayt), for in- deed, the two will never separate until they come back to me by the Pond (of alKawthar on the Judgement's Day)." Imam Khumayni - ridwan Allah `alayh - began his wasiyyah or will with the mention of this tradition of the Prophet (S), known as Hadith alThaqalayn. In the prologue to his wasiyyah he poin- ted out that whatever tragedies and disasters befell the Muslim world during the last fourteen centuries have been mainly due to its estrangement from the Thaqalayn, the twofold legacy of the Prophet (S) in the form of the Qur'an and the Ahl alBayt (A). The extent of the estrangement of the Qur'an will be obvious to anyone who closely examines its teachings and contrasts them with the popular religion of the masses and the prevailing reli- gious ethos, even among the scholars and the intelligentsia. There is certainly a wide gulf that lies between the message and spirit of the Glorious Qur'an and the way Islam has come to be practised in Muslim society, a gulf which has never been so wide as it became in recent centuries under the influence of the West and the tyrannical regimes that have been ruling over Muslims. The extent of the estrangement suffered by the Prophet's Household will be obvious to anyone who studies the history of 2 the Imams of the Ahl alBayt (A), who were isolated from the Muslim masses by despots and left without support in their struggle against the tyrannical regimes of Banu Umayyah and Banu `Abbas.
