Archbishop's Catholic Appeal St. Thomas More Catholic Parish & School Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time u August 9, 2020 “Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.” Matthew 14:29 Saint Peter Attempting to Walk on Waterby François Boucher, 1766 SUNDAY, AUGUST 9, 2020 pastor’s note It has been a while since I can remember a week filled with as many notable saints whose lives and stories of faith, courage and virtue has been as powerful as this week’s assembly. We start off Monday with the saint who is the patron for deacons and a witness to speaking the truth of the faith in the face hatred and intolerance. St. Lawrence was a deacon in the Church of Rome in the mid-third century. He is the one who defiantly brought the poor, the lame and the blind to the Emperor, declaring that these were the riches of the Church. For this he was roasted on a gridiron. Let us give thanks for his witness and remember to pray in thanks for our deacons and their service to and witness of the faith. Tuesday we remember a contemporary of St. Francis of Asissi, St. Clare. As a young eighteen year old, she renounced her wealth and all worldly comforts and started a community of women who witnessed their love of the Lord in the poverty and simplicity of their lives, lived in prayer and service of others. We are blessed to have a community of Capuchin Poor Clare’s here in Denver, who continue that witness of prayer and faithful devotion to the love of God. Pray for these and all women throughout the world who even to this day live that wonderful calling. Wednesday we celebrate St. Jane Frances de Chantal. A contemporary of St. Francis de Sales in 17th century France, she was a wife and mother who, when she became a widow, dedicated her life to forming a community for women who were older or more infirm than most that entered religious communities at that time. Her community of Visitation nuns became so powerful a presence that there were eighty- five monasteries around Europe by the time of her death. As of 2014 there were around 50,000 nuns in this community present around the world. Thursday remembers two martyrs from early third century Italy. Sts. Hippolytus and Pope Pontian were both killed during the persecutions of Emperor Maximinus. An interesting fact about Hippolytus is that he was at one time an anti-pope but reconciled and is the only former anti-pope to die a martyr for the faith. He is also credited as having been an exceptional theologian who had a great impact on liturgical expression. In fact, the second Eucharistic prayer we use today is said to be based largely upon his influence and writings. Friday’s saint is much more contemporary in the history of our Church. St. Maximillian Kolbe is the Franciscan priest who, although from Poland, worked at bringing the Marian movement to Japan as well as to much of eastern Europe. He was arrested in 1941 by the Gestapo and sent to Auschwitz. There he voluntarily gave his life to save the life of a fellow prisoner. His witness of courageous love and compassion is as important as his writings and devotion to our Blessed Mother, who is said to have appeared to him when he was ten years old. And then on Saturday, we have the special Feast of the Assumption of our Blessed Mother. Normally a Holy Day of Obligation, the fact it falls on a Saturday, as well as the dispensation the Archbishop has given from Holy Days and Sunday obligations, means that this year’s celebration is not one of mandatory Mass attendance. Nonetheless, this is a very special day for us here at St. Thomas More parish. It was 27 years ago on this day that World Youth Day in Denver came to a close with the celebration of Mass at Cherry Creek State Park. Pope St. John Paul II was the main celebrant and people from around the world were present for the celebration. An exceptionally large group from France was housed by many families here at St. Thomas More parish. And due to that connection, our pastor, Fr. Michael Walsh, was able to convince the Archbishop of Paris, Cardinal Jean-Marie Lustiger to bless the parish’s newest devotional setting, our Adoration Chapel. You can see a picture reflecting that blessed moment in the entry to the Adoration Chapel. And for well over a quarter century we have had a prayerful and committed presence of our faithful spending time in adoration of the Lord 24/7, 364 days of the year (no adoration on Good Fridays). Just stop into our church during the week these days, where we have temporarily moved the Blessed Sacrament for spacing purposes, and you will see the power of the Lord’s drawing people to His presence in the Eucharist. Thanks to all who spend time with the Lord in this way, praying for yourselves, your loved ones and the whole Church. May God continue to bless us in this great devotion. – Msgr.
