SUNDAY’S READINGS FIRST READING: He got up, ate, and drank; then strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb. (1 Kgs 19:8) PSALM: Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. (Ps 34) SECOND READING: So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma. (Eph 5:1-2) GOSPEL: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day.” (Jn 6:44) Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass ©2001, 1998, 1970 CCD. OBSERVANCES FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 8, 2021 Sunday: 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time ©LPi Monday: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Virgin and Martyr Tuesday: St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr Wednesday: St. Clare, Virgin Thursday: St. Jane Frances de Chantal, Religious REFLECT Friday: Sts. Pontian, Pope, and Hippolytus, Priest, Martyrs Saturday: St. Maximillian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr FIRST READING Next Sunday: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary The prophet Elijah was exhausted and literally prayed for death. The Lord answered his prayer by sending Elijah food and drink for strength. How do you encourage others in your life who are spiritually drained? SECOND READING Paul held Christian communities to very high standards of conduct. How well do you think your faith community holds to these standards today? GOSPEL READING We hear today John’s account of Jesus’ rejection by his own people. The Jews struggled to think of Jesus as “the living bread that came down from heaven.” What are some of Jesus’ words that challenge you or cause you to struggle? 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ©LPi First of all, I would like to thank again those who volunteered and supported the parish for our apple dumpling and managing the booth, the bingo and parking in connection with the celebration of Fort Armstrong Folk Festival. Your assistance and generosity were all appreciated. May God’s blessings be with you all. As life returns to normalcy in so many ways, I would like to bring back again the message shared by the Diocese of Greensburg with regards to Sunday mass and holy days that beginning on Sunday, August 15, 2021, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the obligation to attend Mass in person on Sundays and Holy days will be reinstated. What prompted to make this decision was the consensus of the Catholic Bishops in Pennsylvania, knowing that the impact of the pandemic lately was considerably reduced. And therefore, it is again possible for us to assemble for the Eucharist and to lift the dispensation from the obligation. As they said, the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days comes from our Baptism as Christians. Baptism compels us to unite ourselves with Christ at the altar in His saving Sacrifice of the Cross. “Participation in the communal celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and to his Church (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2182). This is the foundation for the law of the Church that binds us to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days (Code of Canon Law, canon 1247) and our way to fully observe the Third Commandment, to keep holy the Lord’s Day (Deuteronomy 5: 12; Exodus 31: 15; Catechism of the Catholic Church, nos. 2180-2181). However, there are still some exemptions in observing this obligation like those who are seriously ill, have a serious health risk, those who have serious anxiety of being a part of large groups at this time and those who care for those who cannot attend Mass in person. They are not obliged to observe it. Rather they are encouraged to spend time in prayer, in reading the Sacred Scriptures, in viewing a broadcast of the Mass which is intended for those who cannot participate in person and make a spiritual communion. They encouraged us to make this as a moment to thank God anew for the great gift of the Mass and the Real Presence of Jesus to us in His Holy Body and Blood as well as the joy of gathering together as people of faith.
