It was released on May 21, 2007 after Fascination Records released the single Catch You and the second single Me and My Imagination. The album was streamed over the Internet on May 18, 2007, three days before the official release date. It debuted at Number 7 on the UK album chart but dropped to the top 40 after just three weeks. Today the Sun's on Us was the third single released from the album on 13 August 2007, which has made the album re-enter the UK album list at number 39. In an interview with Digital Spy, Ellis-Bextor confirmed that the album's fourth single was supposed to be If I Can't Dance, and on July 5, 2015, the album's fourth single was supposed to be If I Can't Dance. The song also appeared on the soundtrack to St Trinian's. It received mostly positive reviews from music critics, with many praising the album for its enjoyable, glossy dance record. The album became Ellis-Bextor's second studio album, available digitally in the United States. In an interview with Background Digital Spy, Ellis-Bextor claimed to have recorded four duets for the album, but decided not to add any of them at the request of his label. Despite this, Dan Gillespie Sells offers backing vocals for two album songs, and Fred Schneider offers backing vocals on another song. Originally, Ellis-Bextor claimed she would not be appearing on the album cover, but later claimed to have changed her mind. She commented: It's glittering, but hopefully it has a little more depth than just a nice picture of me on the cover! [2] Ellis-Bextor worked on the album with a Frenchman, Dimitri, who was rumoured to be Dimitri from Paris but turned out to be Dimitri Tikovoi. [3] He also worked on the album with his ex-bandmate Kerin Smith. [4] According to Ellis-Bextor, the opening sentence of If I Can't Dance is a famous quote from feminist anarchist Emma Goldman in an interview on The Times' website. [4] He also revealed that he wrote about 80 songs for the album and later admitted: So many demos exist. All in all, it's probably knocking I'd say. [4] He revealed that he had plans to release a song called Hype that tasted like Kraftwerk's Model, but the label denied his permission. [4] After releasing an album in Australia, the album moved into the top 10 of the Australian iTunes pop album chart and the top 40 in the main album chart, but failed to list ARIA Charts. The singles Catch You were released as the album's main single in February 2007. It's pop-rock, electronic singing and talks about Ellis-Bextor chasing the man he wants. [5] It received mostly positive reviews from music critics who praised the infusion of rock guitars and electronic beats and called it a raunchy and very good song. [6] The music video is directed by Sophie Muller and shows Ellis-Bextor chasing someone in Venice. [7] The song appeared moderately on the charts, reaching Number 8 on the UK singles chart, and was in the top 20 in the Italian and Russian singles charts and in the top fifty of the other countries' charts. [8] If You Go was released as a promo single on iTunes in March 2007. [9] Me and my imagination were a continuation of it, which hit the market in May 2007. It's a dance-pop, disco song and its lyrics advise the superman suitor to play harder. [10] It only reached number 23 on the UK singles chart. It was praised by music critics who named it a brilliant and irresistible slice of pop. [6] The song caused controversy because its release on iTunes was unexpectedly delayed. [11] Today the Sun's on Us was the third single released in August. [12] It's a medium-tempo ballad written giving yourself permission to enjoy things when things are going well, despite the fact that you know that good might not last forever. [12] It received generally favorable reviews from music critics who called it brilliant. [13] However, some criticized his song, calling it limited. [14] Single spent a week on the UK singles chart, where it peaked at number 64. [15] In May 2008, a fourth single was expected, if I Can't Dance, but in the end it was delayed and never released. AllMusic's K. Ross Hoffman gave the album 4/5 stars, writing a Welcome Return from one of the most sophisticated and distinctive sounds of British dance pop, Trip the Light Fantastic is easily Sophie Ellis-Bextor's most dynamic album to date. Clearly more consistent than its enjoyable but predecessors, but also – most importantly – much bolder, more diverse and vibrant, its many strong points being the most exciting of his career. [6] [6] also named it hugely enjoyable records, which are a shining example of the current state of art. [6] Digital Spy's Nick Levine also gave the album a rating of 4/5 stars, writing Trip the Light Fantastic easily fulfills the promise of its efferflying singles... [14] Stuart McCaighy of This Is Fake DIY gave the album 8 stars out of 10, writing that Ellis-Bextor has a category, an air most pop stars lack. [22] NME's Pete Cashmore gave the album a rating of 6/10 stars, writing Ellis-Bextor offering lush, mechanical dance muzak, which is probably not what you want, so it helps that with the lights in New York he also delivers good pop songs. As pointless as walking into a walkabout pub and ordering a cosmopolitan, and no less satisfying. [20] BBC Music's Talia Kraines stated that whether there is room in the 2007 music scene for such a shiny pop star is a different matter. Sophie's been making the pop record she wants. Good luck to him. [17] Kitty Empire Of The Observer wrote: Ellis Bextor has panniers stuff, but you won't recognize it from this collection of deeply ordinary songs. [21] Virgin Media's Matt O'Leary gave the album 2.5 stars out of 5, but eventually wrote that while this is a super glossy piece, it doesn't do anything to dispel Sophie Ellis-Bextor's image of making club music, it's ok for your mom. Not bad by any means. [23] Yahoo! Music's Emily MacKay gave the album 6/10 stars, writing Overall Trip the Light Fantastic, however, stumbles upon the disco it is trying so hard to appeal to. Keep trying, Sophie. [24] The album was number 4 on Billboard's 2007 best albums list. [25] Pitchfork ranked Me and my imagination 87th on the 2007 top 100 tracks list. [4] The tour was due to be a nationwide tour of the UK, including festivals such as T4 on the Beach (July 22), twice at V Festival (August 18 and 19) and Summer Sundae (August 11). However, the entire tour was postponed because Ellis-Bextor was part of Take That's 34 tour days. According to Ellis-Bextor, the Trip the Light Fantastic tour was postponed to continue better and bigger than ever in early 2008. Despite this, it was postponed once again and said to have been postponed until autumn, but was eventually cancelled. [4] Ellis-Bextor was also reported to be planning a tour of Ireland, continental Europe and Australia to support the album and promote singles from around the world. However, the component of the world tour was never officially confirmed.
