    Sixteenth Century Journal XLII/3 (2011) ISSN 0361-0160 “Selling stories and many other things in and through the city”: Peddling Print in Renaissance Florence and Venice Rosa M. Salzberg University of Warwick Mobile and marginal, street sellers tend to disappear from the historical record, yet they played a very important part in the dissemination of cheap print from the earliest days of Italian publishing. They operated in the most central spaces of Italian cities such as Venice and Florence, selling cheap printed pamphlets, fliers, and images alongside other small consumer goods. They helped to make print accessible to a wide audience, often engaging in oral hawking or per- formance that could reach beyond the confines of the fully literate minority. However, these sellers occupied an ambiguous position in Italian cities, more often welcomed by customers and audiences than by guilds and government authorities. The increasing restrictions on print peddlers introduced in the era of the Counter- Reformation reflect the efforts of civic and religious authorities to grapple with the contemporary challenges of a burgeoning print market. In February 1560, several cartolai (stationers) petitioned the Duke of Florence, Cosimo I de’ Medici, for an exemption from a recent prohibition against selling in the street on religious holidays. All three petitioners— Tommaso di Antonio del Grasso, Santi di Giuliano Ceserini, and Bartolomeo di Luca— emphasized their poverty and responsibility to provide for large families. They explained that they had been accustomed, “according to long tradition” (secondo l’antica con- suetudine) to sell various kinds of cheap printed texts and images on feast days in the Via Calimala, near the Mercato Vecchio in central Florence, and elsewhere around the city.

Throughout the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the two powers often clashed in open hostilities. This antagonism between the cities lasted for ten generations, and has been compared to the earlier rivalry between Rome and Carthage. Like the struggle between the two ancient powers, the Venetian/Gcnoan hatred stemmed from their competitive relationship in maritime trade. Unlike land-based rivals, sea powers cannot be separated by any natural boundary or agree to observe any territorial spheres of influence. Trade with the Levant, a source of great wealth and prosperity for each of the cities, required Venice and Genoa to come into repeated conflict in ports such as Chios, Lajazzo, Acre, and Tyre.

    READING THE DECAMERON FROM BOCCACCIO TO SALVIATI A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Daniel Thomas Tonozzi February 2010 © 2010 Daniel Thomas Tonozzi READING THE DECAMERON FROM BOCCACCIO TO SALVIATI Daniel Thomas Tonozzi, Ph.D. Cornell University 2010 My dissertation analyzes the assumptions and anxieties the Decameron, in complete and expurgated forms, reveals about the practice of reading, the category of reader, and the materiality of the text. I also consider stories from the Decameron as a dialogue among the narrators who discuss the responsibilities of readers and writers. My introduction sets up how I engage existing concepts of hermeneutics, reader-response theory, and imitation. In Chapter 1, I discuss the practice of reading in terms of humanist imitation. I privilege an appreciation and examination of method, highlighting two responsibilities that weigh on the Decameron’s readers: to recognize useful textual models and to execute those models in a way that balances their replication with innovation. In Chapter 2, I consider the Decameron’s assumptions about how readers judge useful models and discern opportunities for pleasure. I propose a reader who simultaneously acts as an individual agent and a member of a larger community. I identify two divergent models for communal participation that are marked by gender. In Chapter 3, I analyze the interventions of expurgators Vincenzo Borghini and Lionardo Salviati, illustrating how their editions manipulate the tensions inherent in any censored book between its status as literature and its mandate to represent and support a specific ideology.

The Yellow fever and the Italian States in 1804* Italy in 1804 (https://pages.uoregon.edu/mapplace/EU/EU19%20-%20Italy/Maps/EU19_116.jpg) HISTORIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Divergent reactions to the same epidemic phenomenon have been investigated by Erwin Ackerknecht, who studied the reaction of European states to cholera in the nineteenth century.1 He proposed an explanation based on a congruence between economic interests, political systems, medical theories and health policies. In terms of medical theories, there were two major positions regarding the nature and origin of the disease. Proponents of the first claimed that the disease was contagious and circulated because of human contact. Two corresponding sets of health policies were in conflict: quarantines aimed to contain the epidemic by limiting the movement of people and goods, while sanitation strategies sought to purify spaces through urban planning measures. Ackerknecht also highlights the connections between the contagionism/quarantine duo, agricultural and industrial interests, and states with an authoritarian tradition, for example in the Germanic world. On the other hand, he considers that anti-contagionism and cleansing characterize the more liberal states where commercial interests are predominant, such as Great Britain. Akerknecht thus underlines the coherence of two sets: on the one hand, contagionism / Quarantine / Authoritarian states / Agricultural and industrial interests; on the other hand, anti-contagionism / Sanitation / Liberal states / Commercial interests.

Although the nature of books as semi- industrial goods puts them in a different class of product as seen from the point of view of a pre-industrial economy, the broad categories of supply and demand have been used to identify a series of factors giving rise to specific research questions which need input from various aspects of economic historical analysis. The history of the book is placed in relation to some classic topics of economic history, in an attempt to put the book trade and the prices of books in the context of a broader historiographical debate. Among available sources for early modern book prices, the inventory of the book shop of Bernardo Giunti (Department of Special Collections, UCLA, Collection 170/622) is evidence of the thriving book market in Venice of the period. The almost 12,000 entries included in the list of books for sale reflect the purposes and aims of the firm.
