KHAZAR UNIVERSITY Faculty: Education Major: General and Applied Linguistics Topic: “May your young people cast off the stone of singleness:” Azerbaijani “alqış phrases” (blessing formulas) and their American English equivalents, or what is revealed by the lack thereof Master student: Martha Lawry Scientific Advisor: Professor Hamlet Isaxanli Submitted January 2012 1 Summary This thesis by Martha Lawry is entitled “„may your young people cast off the stone of singleness:‟ Azerbaijani „alqış phrases‟ (blessing formulas) and their American English equivalents, or what is revealed by the lack thereof.” The objective of the research is to define the alqış phrases which are frequently used in modern spoken Azerbaijani, determine how best to define them in English, determine their linguistic functions in Azerbaijani, and compare them to the phrases that most closely fulfill the same functions in American English. Ethnographic and comparative research methods were used, including reviewing secondary sources (literature reviews) and qualitative research in the form of both semi- structured interviews conducted with native Azerbaijani speakers of varying ages and social strata living in the Azerbaijan Republic and open-ended structured interviews conducted via an online questionnaire with native English speakers living in the United States. The research led to the conclusion that alqış phrases should be defined as ―blessing formulas‖ in English. Most alqış phrases were determined to be grammatically distinguished by second or third person verbs in optative or imperative mood. They can have the expressive functions of being bono-recognitive, bono-petitive, malo-recognitive or malo-fugitive, although the most common are bono-petitive and malo-fugitive. Alqış phrases were also shown to be politeness strategies according to Levinson and Brown‘s politeness theory (used to protect the speaker‘s positive face or to protect the listener‘s negative face). -

The average household income has risen, where the proportion of middle-class households, earning more than RMB 3 500 per month, has increased. In addition, there is a great share of the „China elite‟, which consists of the upper middle-class and the very wealthy. Due to China‟s enormous market of 1.3 billion people and the growth of wealthier households, the country has become the largest market for luxury. Many luxury brands are established in the market today, some with a greater presence, others more limited. -

ABSTRACT This thesis examines the roles played by the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force in the formulation of Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) policy from 1918 to 1945. Its focus is on policy relating to the use of air power, specifically fixed-wing shore-based aircraft, against submarines. After a period of neglect between the Wars, airborne ASW would be pragmatically prioritised during the Second World War, only to return to a lower priority as the debates which had stymied its earlier development continued. Although the intense rivalry between the RAF and RN was the principal influence on ASW policy, other factors besides Service culture also had significant impacts. -

Signature: Date: 2 Abstract This thesis examines the relationship between science and fashion in the early modern period. It brings together the disciplines of fashion history and the history of science to understand the complicated role that proper appearances played in the signalling of credit in seventeenth and eighteenth-century England and France. In the Renaissance, clothing was an ornament used to display virtue and signal learning, often through textiles and accessories showing natural objects from flowers to sea-monsters. In the seventeenth century, this culture of fashion was challenged when members of the Royal Society were complicit in the introduction of the three- piece suit and a new notion that men should dress in a sober style. The Society was complicit in positioning ornament and fashion in opposition to this sobriety associated with proper masculinity and proper knowledge-making, The thesis argues that this opposition between ‘fashion’ and science became a commonplace in the eighteenth century. Various authors attacked those who engaged in fashionable dress as improper or unreliable thinkers. Many accusations were levelled against women. However, women resisted these changes and asserted their status as knowers of nature. They used textile design to express their natural knowledge. -

Remembering Guy Gibson by Professor Richard Morris On Tuesday 18 May 1943 people in Britain and Allied nations around the world opened their newspapers to read of the RAF’s successful strike against two great German dams in the early hours of the previous day. Page | 1 News of the raid had already been given by the BBC.What the newspapers added were aerial photographs - extraordinary images that revealed the breach in the Möhne dam, and maps showing how the havoc had spread. The story reinforced a public sense that the balance of the war had tilted in the Allies’ favour. Also in the papers that Tuesday morning was a photograph of the man who had led the attack: Wing Commander Guy Penrose Gibson, DSO and bar, DFC and bar, and just twenty- four years old. The public was told of Gibson’s skill and persistence, and of his valour. The force had been split into three waves, of which Gibson had led the first. The Möhne was defended by light flak, which had shot down the second aircraft to attack. Gibson had flown alongside the next attacking aircraft as it ran in, putting his own machine between it and some of the defences. ‘In this way’ said a report on his leadership of the operation, he had ‘shielded the attacking aircraft’. The result of this brave tactic was that the fourth and fifth aircraft had been able to make their attacks without harm and release their weapons accurately. In result, the great Möhne dam had been broken. Gibson had then led aircraft with remaining weapons on board to the Eder Dam - a difficult target surrounded by hills.
