DOI: h t t ps :// doi.org/10.5334/jpl.268 RESEARCH PAPER How missionaries applied Portuguese and Latin descriptive categories in the classification and explanation of verb conjugations and paired verbs of Tamil Cristina Muru University of Tuscia, IT [email protected] Tamil verb stems may be inclusive of a voice morpheme that encodes the degree of agency of the verb. Hence, using Paramasivam’s (1979) terminology, these kinds of verbs are paired verbs of which one is the affective and the other its effective counterpart. In the former, the action expressed by the verb is realised by an agent and affects a patient, whereas in the latter the consequences of the action fall on the subject who realises the action. This paper intends to analyse how missionaries described the verb system of Tamil which differed substantially from their own model of reference (Latin and Portuguese), and how they understood paired verbs, as defined above. As such, taking into account the Western sources that missionaries used to compose and organise their descriptions, this paper focuses on both verb conjugations and paired verbs in Tamil. It also demonstrates how the Latin grammatical framework was applied for the description of Tamil verbs and discusses the Indian grammatical sources available to missionaries. Given that the present classification of Tamil verbs is based on the one offered by a missionary, Karl Friedrich Leberecht Graul (1814–1864), this study highlights how earlier missionaries’ descriptions contributed to the current classification. -

Of all the distinct tribes, the Kotas, the Todas, the Irulas, the Kurumbas and the Badagas form the larger groups, who mainly had a pastoral existence. The men from each family of this tribe are occupied in milking and grazing their large herds of buffaloes; a very common form of pastoral farming. This tribe is distinguished by their traditional costume; a thick white cotton cloth having stripes in red, blue or black, called puthukuli worn by both women and men over a waist cloth. -

The demand of water is increasing day by day. So, groundwater resources play a vital role for additional demand by farmers and Industries and domestic usage leads to rapid development of groundwater. About 63% of available groundwater resources are now being used. However, the development is not uniform all over the State, and in certain districts of Tamil Nadu, intensive groundwater development had led to declining water levels, increasing trend of Over Exploited and Critical Firkas, saline water intrusion, etc. ADMINISTRATIVE SET UP The geographical area of Thoothukudi district is 459054 hectares (4590.54sq.km) accounting for 3.5% of the geographical area of Tamilnadu State. This district has well laid out roads and railway lines connecting all major towns within and outside the State. For administrative purpose this district has been divided into 8 Taluks, 12 Blocks and 41 Firkas. -

Hinduisms, Christian Missions, and the Tinnevelly Shanars: th A Study of Colonial Missions in 19 Century India DYRON B. DAUGHRITY, PHD Written During 5th Year, PhD Religious Studies University of Calgary Calgary, Alberta Protestant Christian missionaries first arrived in south India in 1706 when two young Germans began their work at a Danish colony on India's southeastern coast known as Tranquebar. These early missionaries, Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Pluetschau, brought with them a form of Lutheranism that emphasized personal piety and evangelistic fervour. They had little knowledge of what to expect from the peoples they were about to encounter. They were entering a foreign culture with scarcely sufficient preparation, but with the optimistic view that they would succeed in their task of bringing Christianity to the land of the “Hindoos.”1 The missionaries continued to come and by 1801, when the entire district of Tinnevelly (in south India) had been ceded to the British, there were pockets of Protestant Christianity all over the region. For the missionaries, the ultimate goal was conversion of the “heathen.” Vast resources were contributed by various missionary societies in Europe and America in order to establish churches, 1 In 2000, an important work by D. Its creation marked the beginning of a new Order that would accomplish its apostolic mission through education and evangelisation. The Society’s first apostolic activity was in service of the Portuguese Crown. Thus, Jesuits became involved within the missionary structure of the Portuguese Patronage and ended up preaching massively across non-European spaces and societies. Jesuits achieved one of the greatest polarizations and novelties of their charisma and religious order precisely in those ultramarine lands obtained by Iberian conquest and treatises 3. Among other places, Jesuits were active in Brazil, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan and China. Their work gave birth to a new concept of mission, one which, underlying the Society’s original evangelic impulses, started to be organised around a dynamic conception of “spiritual conquest” aimed at converting to the Roman Catholic faith all those who “simply” ignored or had strayed from Church doctrines. In India, Jesuits created the Northern (Goa) and the Southern (Malabar) Provinces. One of their characteristics was the construction of buildings, which served as the Mission’s headquarters and where teaching was carried out. Even though we have a new concept of college nowadays, this was not a place for schooling or training, but a place whose function was broader than the one we attribute today. -

KONKANI’S OWN DEVANAGARl SCR1PT : THE JESUIT CONTRIBUTION by Mariano Jose Dias Explicit evidence to the effect that Devanagari is the natural script of the Konkani language, comes from none other than Jesuit sources in Goa, in the 16th century. This was dealt with by this writer in his article “Liturgical books in Devanagari Konkani”, in Renovaςão, 25 (1995), pp.203-204. The dynamic organizer of Jesuit missions in the East Visitor Alessandro Valignano (1539- 1606) was keen that Konkani language be learnt in its own script that could be none other than Devanagari, then called letra da terra. It is sufficient to recall what the chronicler of the Society Fr. Francisco de Sousa ( ? -1712) recorded in his Oriente Conquistado (Lisboa,1710) 2nd Part C.I. Div.II, 9, Bombay edition, 1886: "The Visitor ordered that eight scholastics learning Moral theology, be relieved from any other ministry so that they speak only in Konkani among themselves and the Rector ensured strict observance of this order: at certain time during the day they would practice by talking to local people and learn to read and write in the script of the place" (Ao Collegio de Salsete se applicaram este anno oito Irmãos moralistas ao estudo da lingua Canarina, tão necessaria para a cultura dos Christãos e conversão dos gentios.
