Lo Spallan- zani abitava, con la moglie Bianca, la nipote Liliana e dal settembre 1943 anche con il fratello Gino, sistemato ‘roccambolescamente’ alla Caproni sot- traendolo alle nefaste conseguenze dell’8 settembre 1943 (era un militare di leva – classe 1920 - del genio). Gino, (mio pa- dre), era stato sul fronte francese (pochissimo, nel 1940) e in Albania/Yugoslavia/Grecia dal 1940 al 1943 e fu proprio nell’estate del 43 che si ammalò, gli venne l’itterizia e fu dunque rimpatriato e man- dato a Trieste>, (dopo una breve sosta a Gioia del Colle), in ospedale, ed è qui che si trovava ricoverato nella prima decade di settembre del 1943. Per Bonomi è uno dei motivi per cui quell'impresa fu presto dimenticata.
