The Site is currently mixed agricultural land comprising modern amalgamated arable fields. Historically, the landscape was a much more intimate mosaic of small irregular fields bounded by hedgerows and intermixed with grazing and woodland. The assessment has concluded that: The Site has a high potential for archaeological deposits of early prehistoric (Mesolithic) date, a moderate-high potential for later prehistoric and Romano-British deposits (both Site wide), and localised moderate-high potential for medieval and post-medieval deposits around existing historic settlement sites; The Site contains historic hedgerows; The Site contains, or lies adjacent to, a number of designated heritage assets comprising scheduled monuments and listed buildings; Setting issues have been identified in relation to some listed buildings, due to the contribution their setting makes to their overall significance; Recommended mitigation includes fieldwalking, geophysical survey, geoarchaeological test-pitting and trial-trenching across the Site.

Camellias have been glorious. Below them daffodils have produced a truly wordsworthian display, only ending as they give way to bluebells. There have been other surprises: fritillaries have been prolific & magnolias, led by stellata, have so far escaped the frost & delight the eye as one drives through the village. Primroses line hedgerows & banks & pink bleeding heart flourishes under the wild rose. Mowing is up to once every two weeks already. Keep lawns tidy & properly edged & use the mower to mark out paths through the bulbs. Add compost & manure to flower beds & sprinkle with fertilizer. Pruning of autumn flowerers can continue, e.g. the vigorous abelia. Rhododendrons are slipping into flower, some hardly seen in the woods, & azaleas are not far behind. In the vegetable garden last year’s harvest is over but this years potatoes are already above ground. Clean up & add mulch to strawberries & raspberries, & try to curb the latter’s tendency to sprout everywhere. Parsnips & spinach are coming up in lengths of guttering in the green- house. Terrace planters have blossomed with white & pink tulips.
