For this edition several chapters have been completely re-written to relect major developments in Canadian literature since 2004. Surveys of ic- tion, drama, and poetry are complemented by chapters on Aboriginal writ- ing, autobiography, literary criticism, writing by women, and the emergence of urban writing. Areas of research that have expanded since the irst edition include environmental concerns and questions of sexuality which are freshly explored across several different chapters. A substantial chapter on franco- phone writing is included. Authors such as Margaret Atwood, noted for her experiments in multiple literary genres, are given full consideration, as is the work of authors who have achieved major recognition, such as Alice Munro, recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. Eva-Marie Kröller edited the Cambridge Companion to Canadian Literature (irst edn., 2004) and, with Coral Ann Howells, the Cambridge History of Canadian Literature (2009). She has published widely on travel writing and cultural semiotics, and won a Killam Research Prize as well as the Distin- guished Editor Award of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals for her work as editor of the journal Canadian -

H ARTMUT L UTZ The Beginnings of Contemporary Aboriginal Literature in Canada 1967-1972: Part One1 _____________________ Zusammenfassung Die Feiern zum hundertjährigen Jubiläum des Staates Kanada im Jahre 1967 boten zwei indianischen Künstlern Gelegenheit, Auszüge ihrer Literatur dem nationalen Publi- kum vorzustellen. Erst 1961 bzw. 1962 waren Erste Nationen und Inuit zu wahlberechtig- ten Bürgern Kanadas geworden, doch innerhalb des anglokanadischen Kulturnationa- lismus blieben ihre Stimmen bis in die 1980er Jahre ungehört. 1967 markiert somit zwar einen Beginn, bedeutete jedoch noch keinen Durchbruch. In Werken kanonisierter anglokanadischer Autorinnen und Autoren jener Jahre sind indigene Figuren überwie- gend Projektionsflächen ohne Subjektcharakter. Der Erfolg indianischer Literatur in den USA (1969 Pulitzer-Preis an N. Scott Momaday) hatte keine Auswirkungen auf die litera- rische Szene in Kanada, doch änderte sich nach Bürgerrechts-, Hippie- und Anti- Vietnamkriegsbewegung allmählich auch hier das kulturelle Klima. This paper will examine how our perception of Grove’s cycle alters when the stories are viewed as tales. This is the label the author preferred. As he explained in his essay “The Novel,” while the short story deals with characters and incidents “excised” from the “social body” (It Needs to Be Said 120), the tale is concerned with the “border-provinces of human life” or life “on the margin.” Because tales belong to the oral tradition, the style of oration and identity of the teller are also important. Chaucer democratized tales by proving that anyone, irrespective of economic class or educational background, could tell a tale so long as it had sustaining interest to command an audience; Poe used the genre as an invitation to a fantastic, psychologically layered fictional world; and Washington Irving employed narrators who were dramatic figures in their own right, filtering his tales through them (Fallon xvii). -
Enhancing the Use of Regional Literature in Atlantic Canadian Schools
Partnership: the Canadian Journal of Library and Information Practice and Research, vol. 7, no. 1 (2012) The Sea Stacks Project: Enhancing the Use of Regional Literature in Atlantic Canadian Schools Vivian Howard Associate Professor/Associate Dean (Academic) School of Information Management Dalhousie University [email protected] Abstract Research over the past two decades has amply demonstrated the importance of literature to the formation of both regional and national cultural identity, particularly in the face of mass market globalization of children's book publishing in the 21st century as well as the predominance of non-Canadian content from television, movies, books, magazines and internet media. However, Canadian children appear to have only very limited exposure to Canadian authors and illustrators. In Atlantic Canada, regional Atlantic Canadian authors and illustrators for children receive very limited critical attention, and resources for the study and teaching of Atlantic Canadian children's literature are few. Print and digital information sources on regional children's books, publishing, authors and illustrators are scattered and inconsistent in quality and currency. This research project directly addresses these key concerns by summarizing the findings of a survey of Atlantic Canadian teachers on their use of regional books. In response to survey findings, the paper concludes by describing the creation of the Sea Stacks Project: an authoritative, web-delivered information resource devoted to contemporary Atlantic Canadian literature for children and teens. A LIFE AND FOUR LANDSCAPES Frederick John Niven William H. New IRE1 REDERIC] K JOHN NIVEN is today almost unknown. That fact alone would warrant a critical investigation of him, but a study thus motivated could easily end by being merely an arid exercise. Fortunately, in Niven's case, the justifications for reappraisal are many. He warrants it because he was un- usual in Canadian letters. He lived by his writing without being a hack; he was a conscious prose stylist at a time when stylists were few; he was concerned with problems which affected his time, not (for all his apparently "regional" settings) with merely local issues; he was a man with wit, humanity, intelligence, and a willingness to exercise all three — and if this caused him to rebel quietly against orthodox social codes, to emigrate from the London literary world of the 1910's to the hinterland of British Columbia, and to dare to write honestly about the life that he knew existed, then so much the better for his fiction. He was also the friend of such diverse literary figures as Hugh Walpole, Christopher Morley, and I. A. Richards; the recipient (until he emigrated) of regular and favourable re- views both in the TLS and from such critics as Rebecca West; and the colleague of John Murray Gibbon and John Buchan. For all this, the man is a paradox, and difficult to assess. It is probably inevitable that thirty-three books of fiction, two of verse, and a vast array of non-fiction should vary in quality ; sometimes his characters were nothing more than stereotypes, and sometimes, too, he found difficulty in reconciling the fiction he was writing with the facts in which his work found its base. -

She has taught at a number of Canadian universities and last year was Writer in Residence at the University of Toronto. She won the Governor-General's Award in 1966. Her five books of poems include The Circle Game (1966), The Journals of Susanna Moodie (1970) and Power Politics (1971). She has also written two novels, The Edible Woman (1969), and Surfacing (1972) and a critical book Survival (1972). DOUGLAS BARBOUR lives and works in Edmonton, Alberta. He has four books of postry out, of which the latest is songbook (talon- books, 19731. The others are Land Fall (1971), A Poem as Long as the Highway (1971), and White (1972). S. A. DJWA, Associate Professor, teaches Canadian Literature at Simon Fraser University and is a regular contributor to Cana• dian Literature and the Journal of Canadian Fiction. Margaret Atwood: A Canadian Novelist Introduction Contents Margaret Atwood is a name nearly all Canadians know, and now that she has finally won the prestigious Booker Prize her already considerable international Introduction reputation is greatly enhanced. Canadians, however, are often criticized for not celebrating our cultural icons, whether it be from a collective sense of modesty or The Range of The Blind uncertainty as to the elusive Canadian identity. Be that as it may, we do recognize Assassin Margaret Atwood as one of our greatest writers, and this international win for her latest novel, The Blind Assassin, certainly gives us reason to reappraise her Not Just A Novelist considerable contribution to that genre of literature referred to as CanLit. The Booker Prize-considered one of the world's most important literary awards-is given each year to what is judged the best original full-length novel written by a citizen of Subjectivity, Literature, the British Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland. Atwood's novels have been and The Blind Assassin nominated for the Booker three times, and now The Blind Assassin takes its place among the very best literary works of fiction in the world. As Canadians, we have Themes of Margaret good reason to recognize and validate the talent and achievements of our artists, Atwood and we do so. "Canadian content" is a standard qualifier and indicator of success for us, whether in the form of a Jim Carrey movie, the music of Céline Dion, or the Portraying Women's Lives comedy of John Candy or Dan Ackroyd. -

Preface Renate Eigenbrod has been teaching Aboriginal literatures at the postsecondary level (mainly at Lakehead University, Thunder Bay) since 1986 and became increasingly concerned about the lack of knowledge of these literatures among her Native and non- Native students. With very few exceptions, English curricula in secondary schools in Ontario do not include First Nations literatures and although students may take course offerings in Native Studies, these works could also be part of the English courses so that students can learn about First Nations voices. When Eigenbrod’s teaching brought her to the Sandy Lake Reserve in Northwest Ontario, she decided, together with two Anishnaabe teachers, to create a Resource Guide, which would encourage English high school teachers across the country to include Aboriginal literatures in their courses. The writing for this Resource Guide is sustained by Eigenbrod’s work with Aboriginal students, writers, artists, and community workers over many years and, in particular, on the Sandy Lake Reserve with the high school teachers at the Thomas Fiddler Memorial High School, Georgina Kakegamic and Josias Fiddler.
