Nord, Kate Tronner, Kjell Billström and Marianne Gustafsson Belzacq Nord, A.G., Tronner, K., Billström, K. & Gustafsson Belzacq, M., 2016. Pigment traces on medieval stonework in Gotland's churches – examination of seven 12th century baptismal fonts and a limestone pew. Fornvännen 111. Stockholm. The authors have analysed pigments on eight medieval stone objects in Gotland’s churches. They are seven 12th century baptismal fonts made of sandstone and a ce remonial limestone pew in Burs church from about 1350. Fragments of medieval paint were sampled and analysed by SEM/EDX, FTIR, GCMS and MCICPMS. 57 samples were collected. Infinitesimal traces of cinnabar, ultramarine and gold foil were sparsely found. Iron oxide (Fe2O3) and lead pigments occur commonly, while green and blue pigments seem less frequent. Later “improvements” of green copper arsenites were found on the limestone pew in Burs church. Lime has prima rily been used as a binding medium, possibly in combination with now complete ly degraded organic substances. Isotope analyses indicate that the lead pigments most likely have a provenance in the Harz and Erzgebirge mountains in Germany, possibly also in Eisleben. -

Locality Designations in Old Collections from the Silurian of Gotland
LOCALITY DESIGNA TIONS IN OLD COLLECTIONS FROM THE SILURIAN OF GOTLAND By Valdar Jaanusson 1986 Department of Palaeozoo#ogy, Swedlah Muaeum of Natural Hlatory, S·f 04 06 Stockholm. l LOCALITY DESIGNATIONS IN OLD COLLECTIONS FROM THE SILURIAN OF GOTLAND Valdar Jaanusson The Silurian bedrock is exposed on Gotland in hundreds or even thousands of localities, ranging from high and extenstve cliffs to shallow temporary ditohes and patche s of bare rock on the surface. The smaller and ephemeral exposures are troportant in areas where outcrops are few. The problem has been to define and name localities in a consistent manner, to enable the same designat lon to be used for a particular locality by every scientist who collected fossils or samples. On Gotland , collecting of fossils for scientific purposes goes back to Bromell (1738) and Linnaeus (1745), hut for many years "Gotland" was deemed satisfaotory as information for the source of the material. This is true for most collections m ade on Gotland during the first half of the nineteenth cent ury , for example the extensive rnaorofossil material brought home hy Gabriel Marklin (1777-1857) which is now housed in the museum of the Departm ent of Palaeontology, Uppsala University. Nils Petter Angelin (1805-1876), Head of the Department of Palaeontology at Riksmuseum hetween 1864-1876, was also careless with regard to locality :i.nformation in his collections from Gotland. The situation improved when Gustaf Lindström (1829-1901) entered the scene. Lindström, a native of Gotland, was not only an outstanding collector of fossils since his early yo uth, hut he obviously acted as a coordinator for much of the field work on Gotland, at least until the GeologicaJ Survey of Sweden started mappi.ng the island in 1892. -
3D Scanning of Gotland Picture Stones with Supplementary Material Digital Catalogue of 3D Data
Journal of Nordic Archaeological Science 18, pp. 55–65 (2013) 3D scanning of Gotland picture stones with supplementary material Digital catalogue of 3D data Laila Kitzler Åhfeldt Swedish National Heritage Board, The runic research group, Department for Conservation, Box 1114, SE-621 22 Visby, Sweden ([email protected]) The Gotland picture stones (dated to c. 400–1100 AD) are among the most spectacular and informative artefacts from the Iron Age and Viking Age to have been discovered in Sweden. The main aim of this paper is to make digital 3D documentation of the Gotland picture stones publicly available for analysis of their motifs, runic inscriptions and weathering processes. The data were col- lected within the project 3D scanning of the Gotland Picture Stones: Workshops, Iconography and Dating (2006–2008), which includes analyses of these stones by means of a high resolution optical 3D scanner. The aim of the project is to clarify certain basic facts concerning the cutting technique, work organization and surrounding circumstances, iconography and dating. Four main issues are identified: workshops, iconographical interpretations, dating, and finally, documentation and enhanced interpretation of weathered and in places van- dalised picture stones. The following report provides a short summary of the main results. The 3D data are provided in STL files that serve as supplementary material to this paper. They are available on the website of the Swedish National Heritage Board: http://3ddata.raa.se Keywords: picture stone, rune stone, Gotland, Viking Age, Iron Age, 3D scan- ning body of source material in an international context, The Gotland picture stones of the utmost relevance to scholars in Germany, Great as a resource for research Britain and Iceland, for instance. -

Roman spolia are quite frequent in late antique and medieval sacral buildings: Medieval builders pragmatically used – and thus “recycled”1 – tombstones, votive stones, altars, and other monuments of antiquity, and this raises the question to what degree religious or ideological/political intentions played a role in this practice of re-usage. When an antique idol, for instance, remained well visible, was mounted upside down, used as a step of a staircase, or even intentionally damaged or mutilated, it might be suspected that this was prompted by a certain symbolism – such as the overcoming and degradation of heathen idols, which in medieval times were regarded as the devil. In the case of representative picture and epigraphic stones, which do not feature evidently pagan elements, the connection to the glory and authority of the Imperium Romanum and the propagation of a certain continuity may have been a paramount motive. Scholars frequently work on these phenomena,2 but Scandinavia plays no role in this discussion, as there are no antique stone monuments in the 1 A. Esch, Wiederverwendung von Antike im Mitelalter. Gotland's Picture Stones
GOTLAND Gotland’s Picture Stones Bearers of an Enigmatic Legacy otland’s picture stones have long evoked people’s fascination, whether this ’ Ghas been prompted by an interest in life in Scandinavia in the first millennium S PICTURE STONES or an appreciation of the beauty of the stones. The Gotlandic picture stones offer glimpses into an enigmatic world, plentifully endowed with imagery, but they also arouse our curiosity. What was the purpose and significance of the picture stones in the world of their creators, and what underlying messages nestle beneath their ima- gery and broader context? As a step towards elucidating some of the points at issue and gaining an insight into current research, the Runic Research Group at the Swe- dish National Heritage Board, in cooperation with Gotland Museum, arranged an inter national interdisciplinary symposium in 2011, the first symposium ever to focus exclu sively on Gotland’s picture stones. The articles presented in this publication are based on the lectures delivered at that symposium. of an Enigmatic Legacy Bearers ISBN 978-91-88036-86-5 9 789188 036865 GOTLAND’S PICTURE STONES Bearers of an Enigmatic Legacy gotländskt arkiv 2012 Reports from the Friends of the Historical Museum Association Volume 84 publishing costs have been defrayed by Kungl.
