The Unintended Legacy of Hellenism: The Development and Dissemination of the Buddha Image Chukyi Kyaping April 24, 2016 Submitted to the faculty of Ursinus College in fulfillment of the requirements for Honors in History “The Unintended Legacy of Hellenism: The Development and Dissemination of the Buddha Image” Chukyi Kyaping and Hugh Clark (Mentor), History In the first and second century CE, the first images of an anthropomorphic Buddha emerged from the region of Gandhara in the northern Indian subcontinent that later served as the foundation for subsequent representations of the Buddha. This marked a significant shift in the perception of the Buddha, by which point Buddhism had transformed from a philosophy into a religion.
