It challenges the existing theory of internationalization process. This study will compare and contrast the sequential and non-sequential stage in internationalization process. The research tries to explore the facilitation of internationalization process that allows the acceleration of Malaysian foodservice firms to expand globally. By using behavioral approach, this study identifies and delineates the components of strategies adopted in the internationalization process. Based on the case study of the three selected Malaysian foodservice firms, the new model was proposed. It asserted that the intention to expand business overseas requires a firm to undergo (1) pre-internationalization stage; (2) international entry stage; and (3) post-internationalization stage. These three stages were affected by two themes at each stage. These two themes, namely “Western Embeddedness” and “Government Influence” were in turn, formulated on the basis of twelve concepts of internationalization process in cross-case analysis. These twelve concepts were the strategies that accelerated the foreign markets penetration of Malaysian foodservice firms. It was also contended that foodservice firms expand overseas first by franchising, then exporting, and eventually setting up their plant abroad. The newly proposed model of internationalization process was then debated with the existing literature. The limitations and future directions of this model were also discussed. ii ABSTRAK Tesis ini menjalankan projek penyelidikan dari sudut induktif untuk menghasilkan penemuan baru dengan menggunakan proses penyelidikan kualitatif. Ia mencabar teori proses internasionalisasi sedia ada. Kajian ini membanding dan membezakan peringkat turutan dan bukan turutan dalam proses internasionalisasi. Penyelidikan ini cuba mendedahkan pemudahcaraan proses internasionalisasi yang mempercepatkan firma-firma perkhidmatan makanan Malaysia untuk berkembang secara global. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan gelagat, kajian ini mengenalpasti dan menghuraikan komponen strategi yang digunakan dalam proses internasionalisasi. Berdasarkan kepada kajian kes tiga firma perkhidmatan makanan Malaysia yang dipilih, model baru dicadangkan. Ia menegaskan bahawa rancangan untuk mengembangkan perniagaan ke luar negara memerlukan sesebuah firma melalui (1) peringkat pra-internasionalisasi; (2) peringkat kemasukan internasionalisasi; dan (3) peringkat pasca-internasionalisasi. Ketiga-tiga peringkat ini dipengaruhi oleh dua tema di setiap peringkat. Dua tema ini, iaitu, “Penerapan Barat” dan “Pengaruh Kerajaan” seterusnya dihasilkan berdasarkan dua belas konsep proses internasionalisasi dalam analisis silangan kes. Dua belas konsep ini adalah strategi firma-firma perkhidmatan makanan Malaysia yang mempercepatkan penembusan pasaran asing. Ia turut menghujahkan bahawa firma perkhidmatan makanan mengembang ke luar negara melalui francais, diikuti dengan eksport, dan akhirnya membina kilang pengeluaran sendiri di luar negara. Model terbaru proses internasionalisasi yang dicadangkan akan dibahaskan dengan teori yang sedia ada.     CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 INTRODUCTION This study has been conducted at three Malay restaurants in Malaysia to investigate how restaurant customers experienced the factors that influence satisfaction in order to propose a conceptual framework of the customer satisfaction dining experience. The participants involved in the study were mainly restaurant customers to three Malay restaurants. Through the qualitative research method, comprising inductive analysis and multiple data collection techniques (i.e. in-depth interviews, observations and document) with a broad range of customers and insiders (restaurant manager and staff of restaurant front house department), a conceptual framework of the customer satisfaction dining experience was generated. The focus of discussion (Chapter 6) highlights the process and practices of customer dining experience, which in turns provides implications for restaurant management. This chapter contains of the academic context, overview of the study and outline of the thesis. 1.2 THE ACADEMIC CONTEXT The early 1970s saw the emergence of customer satisfaction as a legitimate field of inquiry (Barsky, 1992) and the volume of consumer satisfaction research had increased significantly during the previous four decades (Pettijohn et al., 1997). The issue of customer satisfaction has received great attention in consumer behaviour studies (Tam, 2000) and is one of the most valuable assets of a company (Gundersen et al., 1996). With regard to the food service industry, success in the industry depends on the delivery of superior quality, as well as the value and satisfaction of customers 1 (Oh, 2000). Most restaurateurs have realised the effect of customer satisfaction on customer loyalty for long-term business survival (Cho and Park, 2001), and have chosen to improve customer satisfaction in an attempt to achieve business goals (Sundaram et al., 1997).

The franchising industry in Malaysia is worth in excess of RM25.6 billion in 2015 and is growing. However, the local franchisees is still lagging behind their international players in their home country. Hence, the objective of this study is to determine the factors that lead to the innovative goal realization of the local food franchisees. This study utilizes quantitative research design by distributing 400 questionnaires consisting of measurement for seven latent variables. The instruments consist of 45 items adapted to suit the local franchise industry using a 7-point Likert scale. A response rate of 42% (169) was obtained and the data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) in AMOS. The path model demonstrates that nine significant relationships are significant out of twelve hypotheses examined. It signifies that to achieve goal realization, a franchisee need to undergo a process. It started from goal desire and ends with goal realization. Self-efficacy and goal desire significantly affect goal intention which subsequently effect implementation desire. Next, implementation desire influence implementation intention and self-efficacy. Subsequently, implementation intention and self-efficacy influence plan enactment. Finally, implementation desire and plan enactment are the two significant factors influencing innovative goal realization.
