Author’s Note I learned such a great deal from this entire honors capstone project, that all the knowledge I have acquired can hardly be covered by what I wrote in these 50 pages. I learned so much more that I was not able to share both about Namibia and myself. I can now claim that I am knowledgeable about nearly all areas of Namibian history and life. I certainly am no expert, but after all of this research I can certainly consider myself reliable. I have never had such an extensive knowledge before of one academic area as a result of a school project. I also learned a lot about myself through this project. I learned how I can motivate myself to work, and I learned how I perform when I have to organize such a long and complicated paper, just to name a couple of things. The strange inability to be able to include everything I learned from doing this project is the reason for some of the more random appendices at the end, as I have a passion for both numbers and trivia. -

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This document presents the results of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) undertaken for the 3-dimensional (3D) marine seismic survey programme proposed by GALP through its Namibian subsidiary Windhoek PEL 23 B.V. in the PEL82, in Namibia. This document has been prepared by Environmental Resources Management Iberia S.A (ERM). The proposed survey area lies 100 km west of the closest point in the Namibian coast and 190 km Northwest from Walvis Bay, in water depths varying between 200 and 1,800 meters. Windhoek PEL 23 B.V. intends to acquire approximately 3,000 full fold km 2 of seismic area (see Figure 0.1 ). It is the competent body responsible for aspects related with natural resources management, conservation and environment, including environmental management of in-country resources and approval of all sector EIAs. Key regulations, legislation, as well as international conventions and standards relevant to the Project, are summarized in Table 0.1. LA SAVANE DES POROD Environnement et genre de vie d'un clan dacpa (Centrafrique) Michel BENOIT Département MAA ORSTOM UR Dynamique des Systèmes 1989 de production LASAVANEDESPOROU 3 Un jour de décembre 1987 en Afrique Centrale. Nord de la cuvette du Congo, 6° parallèle. Longitude : 20 degrés Est. La Bamba est une rivière tranquille. Son cours ourlé d'une étroite forêt arrose d'immenses savanes et offre ses eaux claires aux éléphants comme aux premiers matins du monde. La savane des Porou s'étend de part et d'autre de cet affluent de l'Oubangui, à une trentaine de kilomètres au nord d'un ancien poste que les Blancs baptisèrent Grimari après y avoir créé une ville au coeur de l'actuel Centrafrique. Région de collines douces, plantureuse et arrosée (1500 mm de pluies par an répartis sur 120 jours), herbeuse, boisée, giboyeuse et sans hiver, la Haute Bamba abritait le clan des Porou au début de ce siècle lorsqu'ils entrèrent en contact avec l'Adjoint des Affaires Indigènes Lalande qui prenait le contrôle du pays au nom de la France. Les Porou venaient de la Haute Ouaka. Ils avançaient farouches au gré de leurs habitudes et de la guerre. Pour l'étranger -piroguier de l'Oubangui ou marchand du Darfour- les Porou sont des "Bandas". Le mot signifie "filet" et les Porou et leurs voisins chassent effectivement avec ça mais le terme ne vaut guère mieux que son sens littéral. Du massif des Bongo à l'Ombella, en passant par le Bamingui et le Chinko, les hommes se présentent en désignant leur peuple et leur clan. -

In addition to their diminishing population size, the Kordofan giraffe inhabits some of the most unstable regions in the world: southern Chad, the Central African Republic, northern Cameroon and northern Democratic Republic of Congo. Conservation of threatened species is difficult under the best of circumstances, but protecting species in areas with significant political and/or socio-economic challenges, or regions that lack enforced laws, is even more difficult. Building capacity The North Region of Cameroon is one of the last strongholds for the charismatic Train eco-guards in wildlife survey species of the Sudanian savanna woodland, including the Kordofan giraffe. In the techniques and use of new technologies heart of this area, the Western Bénoué Ecosystem (WBE) is composed of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (Bénoué National Park) and four neighbouring hunting zones. Despite its rich biodiversity, the WBE is faced with several threats, the most critical of which is uncontrolled pastoralism by non-local herders. Overgrazing by cattle can negatively impact large herbivore populations by reducing food abundance.
