Jeanne Drewes With over thirty-five years of experience working in the area of disaster planning, response and mitigation my goal is to reduce damage to cultural heritage through thoughtful action prior to a disaster situation. Having created the first workshops in risk management and insurance issues for Libraries and museums my goal now is to use my experience to provide guidance before and after disasters strikes. Experience Responsible for preservation of the general collections of approximately 34 million volumes, including binding (contracts and preparation), housing, reformatting, conservation treatment, deacidification of volumes and sheets from special collections; initiated replacement workflow for damaged materials. Responsible for coordination of disaster response and training for federal libraries through FEDLINK, and for regional libraries. Created and Maintain Disaster Mitigation Planning Assistance website http://resources.conservation-us.org/disaster/ 1/99-6/06 Main Library, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Assistant Director for Access and Preservation. Responsible for preservation of collection of over 5 million volumes. Responsible for collections risk management implementation, emergency response and recovery training. 2004-2006 School of Information, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI Adjunct Professor, Library Science. Developed curriculum and taught one graduate course per semester on preservation management, budgets and hiring, special projects, and preservation processes including digital, binding, conservation, environmental monitoring, and disaster recovery. 12/96-1/99 Milton S. Eisenhower Library, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD Head, Preservation Department. Supervised all preservation activities including collection maintenance, conservation, commercial binding, and disaster preparedness for a collection of nearly 4 million volumes. Responsible for library and university staff training, education, and outreach for preservation; created and maintained content for preservation, and web pages for University and public outreach. Developed resources for disaster response for all libraries in the area in association with the Baltimore Academic Library Consortium. 9/95 - 11/96 Main Library, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan Assistant Preservation Librarian. Supervision and training of staff performing preservation activities; and user 2 education and outreach; environmental monitoring; collections disaster preparedness; created and maintained content for preservation Web pages, monitored and deployed budget resources; developed grant proposals. 1/95-9/95 Museum of Art, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI Imaging Project Coordinator. Set up and coordinated a one-time project to digitize and archive images of the entire museum art collection. Responsible for establishing procedures and policies within the project, established quality control for digitization of photographic slides and formatting photo CD images, designed work flow for the project within the flow of usual museum activities, trained other members of the imaging team in ARGUS collections software and procedures. 11/93-8/94 Pittsburgh Regional Library Center, Pittsburgh, PA Preservation Services Manager (Project Manager). Managed NEH grant-funded position to extend preservation education and outreach to the region of western PA, western MD and WV. Responsible for planning, advertising, and conducting preservation workshops on a variety of topics including disaster preparedness, developed new workshops in insurance and risk management, developed environmental monitoring kit for small libraries and archives. 10/92-10/93 Hatcher Graduate Library, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI Mellon Intern for Preservation Administration. Rotated through each Preservation Division department and worked on specific projects including exhibition in main lobby and assisted with disaster recovery after fire in graduate library. 7/89-10/92 Simpson Library, Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, VA Director of Instruction & Access Services. Responsible for public services including Special Collections (Rare Books & Archives), Reference, Circulation, ILL, Government Documents, and Bibliographic Instruction; developed in-house treatment of damaged materials work area. 8/86-7/89 Law Library, Baylor University, Waco, TX Acquisitions/Serials Librarian. Responsible for acquisitions, interlibrary loans, serials, part-time cataloging, and preservation. Developed campus wide exhibit on disaster recovery.
