Cares1†, Consuelo Sáez-Cordovez1†, Alfonso Valiente-Banuet2, Rodrigo Medel1* and Carezza Botto-Mahan1 Abstract Background: Eulychnia acida is an endemic Chilean cactus species whose fruits show several traits that, taken as a whole, are compatible with a seed dispersal syndrome by large herbivore vertebrates. Since only a few large native mammals exist in Chile at present, cactus fruit consumption and seed dispersal may be coopted by introduced mammals as predicted by Janzen and Martin’s (1982) hypothesis for tropical ecosystems. Findings: We describe the current frugivore species of E. acida in a protected semiarid-Mediterranean ecosystem using field measurements and feeding experiments. In addition, to examine a potential role as seed dispersers of the cactus species, we offered fruits and performed germination tests on seeds defecated by Lama guanicoe and the introduced goat Capra a. hircus under captivity conditions. Our data indicate that while fruits of E. acida are pecked by the Chilean tinamou, Nothoprocta perdicaria, and the Chilean mockingbird, Mimus thenca, and eaten by the brush-tailed rodent, Octodon degus, none of these species could be considered a legitimate seed disperser. Unlike L. guanicoe, the goat C. a. hircus did not reduce seed germination, having a neutral effect. Conclusions: Results from this study indicate that introduced C. a. hircus was the only species showing a potential role in the seed dispersal process of E. -

RESEARCH CHEMICAL AND NUTRITIONAL COMPOSITION OF COPAO FRUIT (Eulychnia acida PHIL.) UNDER THREE ENVironmental CONDITIONS IN THE COQUIMBO REGION Lilia Masson S. 1*, María Angélica Salvatierra G.2, Paz Robert C.1, Cristian Encina A.1, and Conrado Camilo M.1 Copao (Eulychnia acida Phil.) is an endemic arborescent cactus restricted mainly to the semi-arid Coquimbo Region (29°54’28” S, 71°15’15” W), Chile. The area of distribution is from sea level to 1200 m.a.s.l. The edible fruit called rumpa is generally round, with green or pink peel and small scales on its surface, showing wide variability in size and weight. The aim of this work was to characterize the rumpa harvested in January 2009 and 2010 in three sectors of Coquimbo Region to determine chemical and nutritional composition in three fractions: pulp with seeds, juice, and peel. The research showed that this fruit is a good natural source of mainly soluble dietary fiber, which has a jellied texture and is present in the three fractions analyzed: 2% for juice, 3% for pulp with seeds, and approximately 5% for peel, making it potentially a good source of hydrocolloids for the food industry. The fruit is also a good source of vitamin C; around 55 mg 100 g-1 in peel, and 30 mg 100 g-1 in pulp with seeds and juice, values considered high compared to 18 mg 100 g-1 for prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica[L.] Mill.) The main minerals were: K, Mg, Ca, and P. Total polyphenols and betalain pigments were also determined in the pulp with seeds and pink peel fractions, respectively. -

To introduce our hobby to the general public by showing as many outstanding plants as possible. 2. To give our members a forum in which to show their plants. 3. To compete in an informal and friendly atmosphere. EXHIBITOR CLASSIFICATIONS This is a local show and as such is limited to those members and exhibitors residing within a two hundred mile radius of San Jose. NOVICE: If you are under 18, have not won a total of 50 first place ribbons in previous CSSA affiliated shows, or have been competing for less than 5 years in CSSA-affiliated shows, you may exhibit in this class. ADVANCED: You must exhibit in this class if you no longer qualify for the above class. OPEN: If you possess or have possessed a nurseryman's license, or earn a substantial income from the sale of plants, you must exhibit in this class. These classes are lower limits - anyone may move up. If you feel you have been unfairly advanced you may appeal to the Board of Directors for classification in a lower category. Family members, except children under 18, must show in the same class. Classes apply to Divisions I to IV only. Divisions V and VI will be judged in a single open class. SHOW RULES 1. You must own the plants you exhibit for at least six months, except displays. 2. Vendors who sell at the show must exhibit at least 10 plants in the show. -

Received: 20 November 2019; Accepted: 8 February 2020; doi:10.4067/S0718-58392020000200253 ABSTRACT Eulychnia acida Phil. is an arborescent cactus species endemic to Chile, and widespread in the Coquimbo Region, Chile. Wild populations are found on north facing slopes and vary morphologically in fruit shape and color. We conducted a study on reproductive phenology at three locations in the region: Quebrada Honda in the coastal area, Gualliguaica in the Elqui Valley, and La Coipa in the Limarí Valley. A total of 120 stems from 30 selected plants of wild populations were monitored weekly and the phenological stages were evaluated over a season. Through multivariate analysis was determined if climatic factors affected the number of individual and/or reproductive organs observed. The presence of reproductive phenophases is asynchronous, beginning in late autumn with the appearance of flower buds, which bloom mainly in spring and set at the end of the season. Flowering has a unimodal pattern. The variable fruits by stems is strongly correlated (p < 0.05) with the relative humidity (negative) and the degree days (positive). Locations show differences in the duration of the phenological events, which appear to be related to plant size and abundance of reproductive structures. Flowering synchrony among individuals is low when compared with other cacti; this means less overlap of the flowering periods among individuals, which could be a strategy to ensure insect visitation and pollination. -

An examination of the multi-stemmed, arbuscular cactus, Eulychnia breviflora, was made to determine if it follows the same general strategy. Methods: Individuals of the species were evaluated along a 100 km transect in the Atacama Desert. -

The position of all floral buds and open flowers was documented relative to the center of the plants and relative to the center of the individual stems on which they were located. Results: A highly significant majority of the reproductive tissue was located on the equatorial (north) side of the plant and on the equatorial (north) side of the stems on which it was found. Conclusion: Our explanation of the phenomenon differs from other researchers. Inasmuch as reproductive tissue contains little or no chlorophyll, we suggest that the flowers emerge from areas of the stems that receive abundant PAR, not because the reproductive tissue itself requires exposure to PAR. Because the translocation of photosynthates in cacti is difficult and energetically expensive, positioning of reproductive tissue in zones of the stems with high photosynthetic capacity is more energetically efficient. -

Today, we have at hand some two dozens of molecular phylogenetic studies on cacti that have been published during the past decade. These investigations offer various hypotheses about interrelationships among different groups of cacti and form the basis for a revised suprageneric classification system of the family Cactaceae as proposed here. -
