A farewell to dated ideas and concepts – molecular phylogenetics and a revised suprageneric classification of the family Cactaceae Reto Nyffeler & Urs Eggli Abstract: The advent of molecular analytical methods starting in the early 1990s allows now the use of a completely new and independent character set for the evaluation of traditional morphology-based classification systems. Today, we have at hand some two dozens of molecular phylogenetic studies on cacti that have been published during the past decade. These investigations offer various hypotheses about interrelationships among different groups of cacti and form the basis for a revised suprageneric classification system of the family Cactaceae as proposed here. The totally unexpected discovery that the dwarfed and highly specialized Blossfeldia liliputana forms the most distantly related lineage in subfamily Cactoideae is a clear indication that „Buxbaum’s law“ does not apply universally and has indeed been a major obstacle on the way of formulating a sound phylogeny-based classification of Cactaceae. Here we review the available molecular-based phylogenetic evidence for characterizing major monophyletic groups. On this basis we suggest a revised classifi - cation of the cactus family into four subfamilies, eight tribes (two for Opuntioideae, six for Cactoideae), and six subtribes (for Cactoideae). A small num - ber of genera are considered as „orphans“ and are not formally classified except at subfamily level. For each suprageneric taxon, we provide a discussion of the most important changes in comparison with the traditional concepts, and make suggestions on possible evolutionary pathways and character tran - sitions. In a couple of cases we also suggest revised generic synonymy, or the acceptance of additional genera in comparison with the current synoptical monographs of the family. A complete genus listing (including complete generic synonymy and important taxonomic literature) is also provided. Zusammenfassung: Die molekularen Untersuchungsmethoden, die in den frühen 1990er Jahren aufkamen, ermöglichten die Anwendung von vollständig unabhängigen Merkmalen für eine Bewertung der traditionell morphologisch begründeten Klassifikationssysteme. Heute verfügen wir über etwa zwei Dutzend molekular-phylogenetische Arbeiten zu Kakteen, welche während der zurückliegenden Jahre publiziert worden sind. Diese Untersuchungen er - möglichen das Formulieren von verschiedenen Hypothesen zu den Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen verschiedener Gruppen von Kakteen und bilden die Basis für eine überarbeitete supragenerische Klassifikation der Familie der Kakteen, welche hier unterbreitet wird. Die Entdeckung, dass die hochgradig zwergige und spezialisierte Blossfeldia liliputana die ursprünglichste Linie in der Unterfamilie Cactoideae bildet, ist ein klarer Hinweis, dass „Buxbaums Gesetz“ nicht allgemein angewandt werden kann, es war in der Tat ein Haupthindernis auf dem Weg hin zu einer brauchbaren, auf der Phylogenie gegrün - deten Klassifikation. Wir diskutieren hier die verfügbaren molekular begründeten phylogenetischen Argumente für die Definition der größeren mono - phyletischen Clades. Darauf aufbauend erstellen wir eine überarbeitete moderne Klassifikation der Kakteenfamilie mit vier Unterfamilien, acht Triben (zwei für die Opuntioideae, fünf für die Cactoideae) und sechs Subtriben (für die Cactoideae). Eine kleine Zahl von Gattungen werden als „Waisen“ be - trachtet und nicht formal klassifiziert, abgesehen vom Unterfamilienrang. Für jedes supragenerische Taxon diskutieren wir die wichtigsten Änderungen im Vergleich zu traditionellen Konzepten und stellen Vermutungen über mögliche entwicklungsgeschichtliche Verläufe und Merkmalsänderungen an. In einigen Fällen schlagen wir auch eine überarbeitete Gattungssynonymie oder die Annahme von, im Vergleich zu gegenwärtigen Gesamtdarstellungen der Familie, zusätzlichen Gattungen vor. Membership Kathy Fewox HCSS celebrated its anniversary on July 24, 2019 by having a potluck dinner. Seventeen members attended the meeting. There was lots of wonderful food to enjoy, and good company. Cindy Gray donated four Tephro- cactus plants, two for the raffle and two as door prizes. Our meeting on August 28 was attended by nineteen members who braved the threat of rain and flooding to reach the Multi-Service Center. Most of us managed to get there with little trouble, as the worst of the rain had moved south of the 610 loop by about 6:30 p.m. However, Robert Smith got stuck in rain-delayed traffic on his trip in from Highlands, and didn’t arrive until the meeting was officially over. Also attending were four guests: Chris Balshaw, Aditi Nabar, Ziona Burkett (a Florida friend of BonnieJean Grady’s), and Mariela Hiraldo (daughter of Alan Schachter). Dave Thomas donated a Carnegiea gigantea (Giant Saguaro) as a door prize. It isn’t giant yet, but winner Frank Lee is hoping it will grow into its name.

ABSTRACT Inselbergs are granitic or gneissic rock outcrops, distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. Th ey are considered terrestrial islands because of their strong spatial and ecological isolation, thus harboring a set of distinct plant communities that diff er from the surrounding matrix. In Brazil, inselbergs scattered in the Atlantic Forest contain unusually high levels of plant species richness and endemism. Th is study aimed to inventory species of vascular plants and to describe the main habitat types found on an inselberg located in the state of Minas Gerais, in southeastern Brazil. A total of 89 species of vascular plants were recorded (belonging to 37 families), of which six were new to science. Th e richest family was Bromeliaceae (10 spp.), followed by Cyperaceae (seven spp.), Orchidaceae and Poaceae (six spp. each). Life forms were distributed in diff erent proportions between habitats, which suggested distinct microenvironments on the inselberg. In general, habitats under similar environmental stress shared common species and life-form proportions. We argue that fl oristic inventories are still necessary for the development of conservation strategies and management of the unique vegetation on inselbergs in Brazil. Friedrich & G.D.Rowley, Haageocereus decumbens (Vaupel) Backeb. and Pygmaeocereus sp. Johnson & Backeb., (Trichocereeae tribe); Corryocactus brevistylus (K. Schum. ex Vaupel) Britton & Rose (Pachycereeae tribe) and Neoraimondia arequipensis (Meyen) Backeb., (Browningieae tribe). All pollen grains observed under a light microscope appeared in monades, shape varying from spheroidal to spheroidal oblate; all colpate, with the exception of C. brevistylus, with spinules < 1 µm to 2 µm; exine thickness varied 2 - 3 µm; tectum without perceptible differences, always was pierced.
