SB 58/2013 11 June 2013 Rail Station Usage in Wales 2011-12 This Statistical Bulletin reports on the usage of rail stations in Wales. Information covers each station in Wales for the past three financial years, from 2009-10 to 2011-12, and for Wales and the UK as a whole back to 2004-05. The bulletin is based on the annual station usage report that is published by the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR). As part of this report the ORR publish a spreadsheet which lists the estimated station entries and station exits for each station on the UK rail network. Key results The total number of station entries/exits in Welsh stations has risen every year since 2004-05. Cardiff Central remains the busiest station in Wales with around one quarter of all station entries/exits. Rail station usage in Wales accounts for around 2 per cent of the UK total. Eryri Local Development Plan Background Paper 21 Zones of Influence May 2017 Background Paper 21: Zones of Influence – May 2017 Introduction The Authority has identified eight ‘Zones of influence’ which are within and straddle the National Park. These areas have similar characteristics and have strong community links. The work on the Zones of Influence draws on a wide range of surveys and related national, regional and local plans and strategies discussed in the Spatial Development Strategy Background Paper. The paper identifies key centres within each zone of influence and recognises the influences of key centres outside the Park to inform the Spatial Development Strategy. The paper identifies key transport routes, key employment areas, and further education and key services for each zone. BALA ZONE OF INFLUENCE 3 Background Paper 21: Zones of Influence – May 2017 What’s it like now? 1.2. This zone covers Penllyn rural hinterland covering the community councils of Llanuwchllyn, Llandderfel, Llangywer, Llanycil and Bala and has a population of 4,362 according to the 2011 Census. The landscape is rural in character with scattered farmsteads and small villages. The zone includes Llyn Tegid (the largest natural lake in Wales), Llyn Celyn, Arenig Fawr and parts of the Aran Fawddwy. The main service centre for the area is the market town of Bala. Penllyn has strong traditions based on the Welsh language and culture. -

It is a fascinating story of cut-throat business rivalry and risk-taking when the 19th century Industrial Revolution was at its peak, but unfortunately the Conwy Valley line between Blaenau Ffestiniog and the dock at Deganwy never fulfilled the high expectations of the railway owners who built it. National Assembly for Wales Enterprise and Business Committee Inquiry into the future of the Wales and Borders Rail Evidence from Heart of Wales Line Forum – WBF 40 Inquiry of the Enterprise and Business Committee of the National Assembly for Wales into the future of the Wales and Borders Rail Franchise: Response from the Heart of Wales Line Forum The terms of reference for the inquiry are: a) What lessons can be learnt from the current franchise? b) What priorities can be identified to ensure that rail passenger services in Wales and the borders provide the best possible service for passengers from 2018? c) How can service delivery after 2018 deliver connectivity and value for money for passengers while reducing the burden on the tax payer? Our response to these key issues: 1) Whether the current franchise meets passenger needs and what lessons should be learnt from it: The current franchise, which was specified by the UK Department for Transport, was predicated on ‘no growth’ in passenger demand. However, as the Network Rail Route Utilisation Strategy (RUS) of November 2008 comments ‘There has been continued strong growth in passenger demand, particularly around the Cardiff region’, Since publication of the Wales RUS Draft for Consultation the growth limits have been slightly lifted, to reflect both the expected trends for the all-day and commuting segments of the market (Wales RUS, p4). Whilst we acknowledge that Arriva Trains Wales has provided investment over and above its franchise obligations we feel that the current franchise is inflexible to changes both in passenger demand within the railway industry, and in the Welsh economy in general.
