Challenge yourself, don't strain yourself. Be in the moment. Mind follows breath. This is a dialogue, not a monologue ... body, breath and mind. Think of your Yoga practice as meditation in motion, a work in instead of a work out. Yoga is not a competition, not even with yourself. Forget about what you used to do. There is no gain with negative pain. Try not to muscle into the postures, relax into them. If you are making a face you are trying too hard. On a 1-10 in intensity, don't go beyond a 7¾. © 2014 All Rights Reserved--Larry Payne PhD You are the chairman of the board; you decide when to come out of the posture. Larryisms (continued) Let the posture fit you instead of trying to fit yourself into the posture. The exhalation phase of your breath is the key to relaxation. Remembering the breath has an accumulative effect like mileage plus. Yoga is not in a hurry; resist the temptation to speed up. Think of lengthening and widening. When comfortable, close your eyes, so you won't compete with anyone else. Concentrate here and you will concentrate better in everything you do. If you hear a pop in this twist, you just saved yourself $75. The beauty of yoga is that if you don't get the pose right in this lifetime, you can get it in the next lifetime. • —The History of Hatha Yoga in America: The
“The History of Hatha Yoga in America: the Americanization of Yoga” Book proposal By Ira Israel Although many American yoga teachers invoke the putative legitimacy of the legacy of yoga as a 5000 year old Indian practice, the core of the yoga in America – the “asanas,” or positions – is only around 600 years old. And yoga as a codified 90 minute ritual or sequence is at most only 120 years old. During the period of the Vedas 5000 years ago, yoga consisted of groups of men chanting to the gods around a fire. Thousands of years later during the period of the Upanishads, that ritual of generating heat (“tapas”) became internalized through concentrated breathing and contrary or bipolar positions e.g., reaching the torso upwards while grounding the lower body downwards. The History of Yoga in America is relatively brief yet very complex and in fact, I will argue that what has happened to yoga in America is tantamount to comparing Starbucks to French café life: I call it “The Americanization of Yoga.” For centuries America, the melting pot, has usurped sundry traditions from various cultures; however, there is something unique about the rise of the influence of yoga and Eastern philosophy in America that make it worth analyzing. There are a few main schools of hatha yoga that have evolved in America: Sivananda, Iyengar, Astanga, and later Bikram, Power, and Anusara (the Kundalini lineage will not be addressed in this book because so much has been written about it already). After practicing many of these different “styles” or schools of hatha yoga in New York, North Carolina, Florida, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Paris as well as in Thailand and Indonesia, I became so fascinated by the history and evolution of yoga that I went to the University of California at Santa Barbara to get a Master of Arts Degree in Hinduism and Buddhism which I completed in 1999.

Thriving in Healthcare: How pranayama, asana, and dyana can transform your practice Melissa Lea-Foster Rietz, FNP-BC, BC-ADM, RYT-200 Presbyterian Medical Services Farmington, NM [email protected] Professional Disclosure I have no personal or professional affiliation with any of the resources listed in this presentation, and will receive no monetary gain or professional advancement from this lecture. Talk Objectives Provide a VERY brief history of yoga Define three aspects of wellness: mental, physical, and social. Define pranayama, asana, and dyana. Discuss the current evidence demonstrating the impact of pranayama, asana, and dyana on mental, physical, and social wellness. Learn and practice three techniques of pranayama, asana, and dyana that can be used in the clinic setting with patients. Resources to encourage participation from patients and to enhance your own practice. Yoga as Medicine It is estimated that 21 million adults in the United States practice yoga. In the past 15 years the number of practitioners, of all ages, has doubled. It is thought that this increase is related to broader access, a growing body of research on the affects of the practice, and our understanding that ancient practices may hold the key to healing modern chronic diseases. Yoga: A VERY Brief History Yoga originated 5,000 or more years ago with the Indus Civilization Sanskrit is the language used in most Yogic scriptures and it is believed that the principles of the practice were transmitted by word of mouth for generations. Georg Feuerstien divides the history of Yoga into four catagories: Vedic Yoga: connected to ritual life, focus the inner mind in order to transcend the limitations of the ordinary mind Preclassical Yoga: Yogic texts, Upanishads and the Bhagavad-Gita Classical Yoga: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the eight fold path Postclassical Yoga: Creation of Hatha (willful/forceful) Yoga, incorporation of the body into the practice Modern Yoga Swami (master) Vivekananda speaks at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893.

Early teachings on yoga were recorded on fragile palm leaves which got lost or damaged in course of time. Yoga practice is believed to have its origin with the very dawn of civilization. Long before the religions or beliefs were created the science of yoga has its origin as believed. Prevedic yoga, Vedic Yoga, Preclassical Yoga, Classical Yoga, Postclassical Yoga and Modern period. TRANSLATING, PRACTICING AND COMMODIFYING YOGA IN THE U.S. By SHREENA NIKETA DIVYAKANT GANDHI A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2009 1 © 2009 Shreena Niketa Divyakant Gandhi 2 To My Dad and Mom 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First and foremost, I am thankful for all the teachers that I have had over the years. Each member of my dissertation committee has been instrumental in how I have come to think about history and religion. Dr. Jon Sensbach (through Rebecca) has helped me think about the characters that create the history; that they are not merely pawns but agents that are emblematic of their times and contexts, which helped me realize that the various yogi characters in my dissertation are not only products but also producers of history. Dr. Manuel Vasquez introduced me to Maurice Merleau-Ponty and the fallacy of a Cartesian outlook especially when examining a bodily practice. Far beyond yoga, Dr. Vasudha Narayanan opened my eyes to the richness and variety of my own history, heritage and faith; her words have brought meaning and hope in times of extreme light and darkness over these past six years. Dr. David Hackett has patiently and meticulously worked with me on a variety of subjects; because of his dedicated teaching I have been able to think through and about the commodity and fetish, its place in culture, capitalism and American religious history. Without the guidance and teaching of Dr. Narayanan and Dr.

  • Yoga and Christianity: Are They
Yoga and Christianity: Are They Compatible? Written by Michael Gleghorn What is Yoga? What is yoga? For many in the West, yoga is simply a system of physical exercise, a means of strengthening the body, improving flexibility, and even healing or preventing a variety of bodily ailments. But if we inquire into the history and philosophy of yoga we discover that "much more than a system of physical exercise for health, Yoga is . [an] ancient path to spiritual growth." It is a path enshrined in much of the sacred literature of India.{1} Thus, if we truly want a better understanding of yoga, we must dig beneath the surface and examine the historical roots of the subject. Before we begin digging, however, we must first understand what the term "yoga" actually means. "According to tradition, 'yoga' means 'union,' the union...of the finite 'jiva' (transitory self) with the infinite'...Brahman' (eternal Self)."{2} "Brahman" is a term often used for the Hindu concept of "God," or Ultimate Reality. It is an impersonal, divine substance that "pervades, envelops, and underlies everything."{3} With this in mind, let's briefly look at three key texts that will help us chart the origin and development of yoga within India. It appears that one can trace both the practice and goal of yoga all the way back to the Upanishads, probably written between 1000-500 B.C.{4} One Upanishad tells us: "Unite the light within you with the light of Brahman."{5} Clearly, then, the goal of yoga (i.e. union with Brahman) is at least as old as the Upanishads.

The Americanization of Ancient Science Christopher William Cavanaugh Pederson Spring 2014 History 484 Prof. Tauger In recent years, the growth of Yoga has gained much notoriety. The program “YOGA ed.”, promoted by Yoga instructor and creator Tara Guber, has developed rapid popularity in public schools. By 2007, 100 schools in twenty-six states ran the program taught by more than 300 physical education (PE) instructors.1 Yet this new PE initiative has been challenged by an unusual alliance of secular and Christian fundamentalist parents. A group of parents at a school in Encinitas County, California sued the school district superintendent in Sedlock vs. Timothy Baird Superintendent over the use of YOGA ed. in their children’s school. The parents claimed that Yoga was a religious practice and thus violated separation of church and state, citing the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.2 Suing on behalf of the parents in the lawsuit, The National Center for Law and Policy (NCLP) alleged “civil rights violations resulting from its… Ashtanga yoga program,” and claimed that Yoga was, 1 “Yoga Causes Controversy in Public Schools: Some Parents Say it Violates the Separation of Church and State,” NBC News, January 28, 2007, http://www.nbcnews.com/id/16859368/ns/health-childrens_health/t/yoga-causes-controversy- public-schools/#.Uzw4XiiMfuc. 2 Kyla Calvert, “Promoting Hinduism?
