In einer beruflichen Umbruchphase, in der ich dem Tanz nicht mehr so viel Gewicht geben wollte, tat sich ein Zeitfenster auf. Darin spürte ich meine Chance und meinen Wunsch, tiefer in Yoga einzutauchen, es wirk- lich kennenzulernen und es mit zu meiner Berufung, meinem Beruf, werden zu lassen. Aber jetzt, mit beginnender Reife und nach so vielen Jahren an Aus- bildungen, Weiterbildungen, noch einmal etwas Neues beginnen? Welchen Stil? Welcher Lehrer? Hatte ich in allen Yogastunden und Kursen doch immer meine Zweifel, ob Yoga wirklich etwas für mich ist. Und doch war da eine unmissverständliche Stimme in mir, die mir auch sagte: Mit Yoga gehst du in die nächste Lebensphase, in die Reife, und vermittelst es bis ins hohe Alter mit all deiner Lebensweisheit. Ich hatte mir dafür ganz klare Rahmenbedingungen gesetzt: eine bestimmte Zeitspanne, ein Budget und sogar einen geografischen Rahmen. Yoga sollte sich auf den Weg zu mir machen. So begann ich zu recherchieren. Dann entdeckte ich Beate, ihre Homepage und den einladenden Filmausschnitt ihrer DVD. Es war eine Offenbarung für mich. Nun wusste ich, nach was ich gesucht hatte. Begeistert las ich schon ihr erstes Buch. Es war eine unglaubliche Freude in mir, mich darin wieder selbst zu entdecken – und so manche Gemeinsamkeit in unserer Tanz-Biografie. Ihre erfrischende und einladende Art bei unserem ersten Telefongespräch bestärkte mich darin, meinen Yogaweg zu beginnen, denn Yoga kennt kein Alter, wie sie selbst authentisch vermittelt. Das lebt und lehrt Beate mit heiterer Gelassenheit. Dabei ist und bleibt sie nah am Leben, auch an ihrem Leben mit all den Glücksmomenten und auch Herausforderungen. In all ihren Fortbildungen und Workshops wird Yoga zu einem ganz individuellen Yoga, für jede Frau, für jeden Mann, für jeden Körper, für jedes Alter und für jede Lebensphase. Was für ein Geschenk, und so selten in der Yogaszene! Bei den vielen »Ausflügen«, die ich auch in andere Yogastile gemacht habe, bringe ich Inspirationen mit, um damit wieder ganz tief in Flow Yoga einzutauchen, zu meinen Wurzeln zurück, die auch immer den Tanz im Hintergrund haben, und in den Fluss meines eigenen Lebens, so wie es jetzt gerade ist. Nur so kann ich Yoga und auch Tanz unterrichten, kann inspirieren: in meiner momentan zur Verfügung stehenden Kraft. So kann ich jeden Menschen darin individuell wahrnehmen und unterstützen, jeden in sei- ner momentanen Lebensphase und Reife. Ob es meine weit über 70-jährige Teilnehmerin ist, die weltoffen ihre Lebensweisheit ausstrahlt und begeistert Vorwort 9 mit 20-, 30- oder 40-Jährigen zum Yoga kommt, oder auch schwangere Frauen, in denen selbst neues Leben reift, und all die anderen Menschen, die Yoga er- fahren und vor allem erleben wollen. Dieses Sich-Einlassen auf den Fluss des Lebens beschreibt Beate immer wie- der so wundervoll in diesem Buch. Es sind keine neuen Konzepte, es bleibt Beates Flow Yoga, mit der ganzen Fülle ihres Lebens. Ihre Flows bekommen noch mehr Tiefe und Weite und kreieren einen Raum, der eigentlich alterslos ist und vielleicht gerade deshalb auch zu einem Yoga für die reifen Jahre ein- lädt. Ihre vielseitigen Recherchen in verschiedene Fachrichtungen, wie Yoga uns unterstützen kann, lässt Yoga als ganzheitliches Lebenskonzept erkennen. Als Mutter von zwei erwachsenen Töchtern, die selbst Yoga praktizieren und von denen eine Tochter inzwischen selbst Yogalehrerin ist, und als Großmutter erlebe ich drei Lebensphasen

    “The History of Hatha Yoga in America: the Americanization of Yoga” Book proposal By Ira Israel Although many American yoga teachers invoke the putative legitimacy of the legacy of yoga as a 5000 year old Indian practice, the core of the yoga in America – the “asanas,” or positions – is only around 600 years old. And yoga as a codified 90 minute ritual or sequence is at most only 120 years old. During the period of the Vedas 5000 years ago, yoga consisted of groups of men chanting to the gods around a fire. Thousands of years later during the period of the Upanishads, that ritual of generating heat (“tapas”) became internalized through concentrated breathing and contrary or bipolar positions e.g., reaching the torso upwards while grounding the lower body downwards. The History of Yoga in America is relatively brief yet very complex and in fact, I will argue that what has happened to yoga in America is tantamount to comparing Starbucks to French café life: I call it “The Americanization of Yoga.” For centuries America, the melting pot, has usurped sundry traditions from various cultures; however, there is something unique about the rise of the influence of yoga and Eastern philosophy in America that make it worth analyzing. There are a few main schools of hatha yoga that have evolved in America: Sivananda, Iyengar, Astanga, and later Bikram, Power, and Anusara (the Kundalini lineage will not be addressed in this book because so much has been written about it already). After practicing many of these different “styles” or schools of hatha yoga in New York, North Carolina, Florida, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Paris as well as in Thailand and Indonesia, I became so fascinated by the history and evolution of yoga that I went to the University of California at Santa Barbara to get a Master of Arts Degree in Hinduism and Buddhism which I completed in 1999.

    UNDERSTANDING MODERN YOGA PEDAGOGY AND CURRICULUM: EXPLORING SENSE-MAKING BY SENIOR WESTERN YOGA TEACHER- TRAINERS A Thesis submitted by Andy Davies, MEd For the award of Doctor of Philosophy 2016 Abstract ABSTRACT This study explored senior Western Yoga teacher-trainers’ sense-making in the context of her or his Modern Yoga teacher-training programs. Through senior Western Yoga teacher-trainers’ sense-making of her or his interpretations and applications of non-Western Yoga philosophies and traditions, meaning-making was generated. Sense-making here denotes the participants’ understandings, while meaning-making refers to the understandings that I generated as the researcher. The term Modern Yoga is used in this study to represent a Western understanding and application of non-Western Yoga philosophies and traditions that are referred to here as Premodern Yoga. The aim of this research was to construct a greater understanding and appreciation of senior Western Yoga teacher-trainers’ considerations when conceptualising, planning and implementing Yoga teacher- training. The research questions focused upon the senior Western Yoga teacher- trainers’ spiritual-ethical reflections and her or his pedagogical and curriculum priorities. This research contributes significantly to the body of scholarship related to the pedagogical and curriculum world of Yoga teacher-training and Yoga teaching. In this trans-philosophical, transnational and transcultural research project, I have sought to disrupt various dichotomous understandings. These binaries were considered under two broader umbrella binaries: East-West and Mind-Body. I drew upon the Sanskrit language to construct neologisms to provide me with a scaffold with which to disrupt the limitations and preferential treatment of either/or thinking of Western and non-Western philosophies and meaning-making, while revealing contextually rich, non-binaristic meaning-making.
