À mes parents, qui m’ont regardée enfiler les années d’études en littérature sans toujours bien comprendre pourquoi, mais qui n’ont jamais failli à me témoigner, malgré tout, leur appui. J’aime regarder les années entre nous s’accumuler, les traditions se sédimenter, les fils de nos genèses s’emmêler. Si j’en ressors avec une parcelle de ta rigueur d’écriture et de ta détermination créative, j’en serai une meilleure écrivaine. À Vincent, qui a participé, comme lui seul sait le faire, aux balbutiements de cette thèse. Merci pour l’accès illimité aux séries télé que tu m’as partagées sans jamais rien demander en retour. Tu as ainsi contribué non seulement à ma réflexion, mais aussi à mes cruciaux moments d’évasion. Aux précieuses personnes qui ont fait des couloirs du quatrième étage du Judith-Jasmin un espace lumineux, malgré leurs allures austères : À toi, chère Gab Do, ma complice originale de bunker. Merci de m’avoir donné l’impression de te connaître depuis toujours. Nos routes en parallèle durant ces longs mois furent salutaires à l’aboutissement de ce projet; je le réalise aujourd’hui. À toi, chère Jenn, qui n’a jamais vraiment été du 4e étage, mais dont la présence a pourtant doucement investi chacun·e de nous. Ta sollicitude m’a souvent prise au dépourvu. Merci d’avoir compris que je suis de celles qui ne se laissent pas si aisément aider. À toi, cher Jean-François, tout en secret et en retenue. J’avais eu vent de ton humeur impartiale; pourtant, derrière ton visage composé, j’ai plutôt découvert une loyauté farouche et une écoute déconcertante. Merci de m’avoir montré cette part de toi. Chère Maude, tu es mon inattendu·e. Je ne croyais pas, si loin dans la thèse, rencontrer quelqu’un·e; faire confiance, à nouveau. Pourtant, c’est tout naturellement que nous avons traversé à deux ces ultimes années de rédaction et le début de nos vies professorales. Merci pour ce quotidien partagé sans heurts et sans envies qui s’étend déjà bien au-delà de la thèse. Ma chère Gabrielle G-D, je ne sais même plus par où commencer, de peur que cela se finisse. Des 5 à 7 qui s’éternisent après nos séminaires de maîtrise, aux brunchs qui rejoignent les nuits, ton amitié s’est faufilée dans ma vie jusqu’à venir me rattraper au doctorat, nos bureaux à deux petites portes d’écart, juste près assez pour que je t’entende 4 rire, soupirer, toussoter et que, alors, je ne me sente plus seule. Je t’ai déjà écrit que ta sensibilité m’aide à délier la mienne, quand elle se retranche quelque part où on ne peut plus l’atteindre. Jusqu’aux derniers sursauts de cette thèse, tu m’en auras fait la démonstration. Pour ça, merci du fond du cœur. À Thanya, merci pour chaque jeudi, où tu as su déposer une halte dans les mouvements incessants de mon esprit. J’ai enfin la chance de te dire combien cette heure et demie hebdomadaire m’a été salutaire. Merci de m’avoir permis de retrouver le chemin de ma respiration. À Amélie, merci d’avoir accompagné la rédaction de ces pages par l’ingéniosité de tes mains, mais aussi par tes réflexions riches et ta conversation apaisante. Si mon corps a su rester aligné, en dépit des longues heures sédentaires, c’est grâce à toi. À Marie et Charlie, merci de m’avoir prêté votre havre de paix, là-bas, au nord. C’est là, face aux montagnes, que la thèse a su commencer à s’écrire. À l’équipe du Patro, à l’incomparable Mado et toute la grande famille de Fort-Coulonge, merci d’avoir permis qu’un espace à soi s’ouvre le temps d’une semaine, entre les lits de la Coulonge et de l’Outaouais. Grâce à vous, il y a un peu d’air du Pontiac qui souffle entre ces lignes. À Alice, fée marraine pop, qui a permis que l’après-thèse ne soit pas teintée de vide. Merci pour ta confiance, ta générosité et, surtout, ta force. Cette thèse n’aurait peut-être pas abouti sans l’aide financière précieuse du Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada (CRSH) ni sans la confiance accordée par le département d’études littéraires de l’UQAM et le centre de recherche Figura. Voilà que se termine le vaste projet qui naissait alors même que nos routes s’entrelaçaient, pour une deuxième et ultime fois. Merci d’avoir trouvé les mots quand je n’y arrivais plus (déblouchli). Je n’ai jamais été aussi fière de cette thèse que lorsque je t’ai épiée en parler à d’autres. C’est toujours tendue vers toi que j’écris. Maintenant, c’est à deux que nous dessinons les projets à venir; c’est à deux que nous sommes éternelles. Je n’ai besoin d’autre certitude que toi. K'kzalmel, n’gezalem. J’ai une pensée particulière pour Jacqueline O’Bomsawin, Bernard O’Bomsawin, Michel Struelens, Philippe Boulben, Gilberte Dupuis, Suzanne Galand, née Le Gal, Jean-François Le Gal, tous parti·e·s durant la longue route que forme la rédaction de toute thèse. J’ai parfois cru que c’était sa destinée, son devenir : témoigner silencieusement des morts, les laisser prendre le dessus sur l’académie, l’écriture, les obligations. Mais les chagrins causés par leur départ précipité ont, contre toute attente, placé une grande lumière dans l’écriture. Une pensée aussi pour René Lapointe qui m’a consciencieusement demandé des nouvelles « de mes écritures », chaque dimanche, et qui m’a partagé, en retour, un siècle d’anecdotes. C’est un privilège d’avoir fait ta rencontre. Je dédie cette thèse à Michel Struelens, mon Bon-papa, qui, le premier, m’a appris la force du discours ainsi que la douceur pouvant se loger dans la rigueur.

Outside of his full-time role, Pamon recently completed a 10 year term as a board member of New York Road Runners ("NYRR"), a non-profit organization that produces more than 100 sports events each year - including the famed New York City Marathon.

Em um primeiro momento, foi realizada uma extensa pesquisa sobre a história do videoclipe, suas origens e influências formais. Para essa pesquisa, utilizei uma bibliografia extensa, composta por autores como Arlindo Machado, Ken Dancyger, Kristin Thompson e David Bordwell, Flora Correia e Carol Vernallis. A obra Experiencing Music Video, de Carol Vernallis foi muito importante para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa e o uso da reserva técnica da bolsa para a aquisição dessa obra foi fundamental, uma vez que não a encontrei em bibliotecas públicas. Após o levantamento bibliográfico incial, foi realizada uma pesquisa sobre a biografia das artistas, de modo a possibilitar um melhor entendimento do contexto em que cada uma das obras foi lançada e a trajetória das três artistas até o momento de criação dos álbuns. Em seguida, realizei uma análise meticulosa de Let England Shake e Lemonade.

When Life Gives You Lemons, "Get In Formation:" A Black Feminist Analysis of Beyonce's Visual Album, Lemonade Abstract Beyonce's visual album, Lemonade, has been considered a Black feminist piece of work because of the ways in which it centralizes the experiences of Black women, including their love relationships with Black men, their relationships with their mothers and daughters, and their relationships with other Black women. The album shows consistent themes of motherhood, the "love and trouble tradition," and Afrocentrism. Because of its hint of Afrocentrism, however, Lemonade can be argued as an anti Black feminist work because Afrocentrism holds many sexist beliefs of Black women. This essay will discuss the ways in which Lemonade's inextricable influences of Black feminism and Afrocentrism, along with other anti Black feminist notions, can be used as a consciousness-raising tool.

Given its innovative poetic, visual, musical and socio-politic impact, the famous and controversial African American singer has taken an untraveled road—both personal and professional. The purpose of this essay is to provide a close reading of the poetry, music, lyrics and visuals in four sections from Beyoncé’s critically acclaimed Lemonade (2016). To this end, I have chosen what I believe are the most representative sections of Lemonade together with their respective songs. Thus, I focus on the song “Hold Up” from Denial; “Daddy Lessons” from Accountability, “Freedom” from Hope, and “Formation,” where Beyoncé addresses topics such as infidelity, racism, women’s representation, and racism and inequality. I analyse these topics through a close-reading and interpretation of Warsan Shire’s poetry (a source of inspiration), as well as Beyoncé’s own music, lyrics, and imagery. From this analysis, it is safe to say that Lemonade is a relevant work of art that will perdure in time, since it highlights positive representations of African-Americans, at the same time Beyoncé critically denounces the current racial unrest lived in the USA.

Pop-star Beyoncé Gisele Knowles-Carter is an interesting case in the discussion of colorism because her career has expressed a rich intimacy to Southern Black cul- ture and female empowerment while also playing into tropes of the mulatta “fancy girl,” whose relative proximity to whiteness adheres social value within mainstream culture. Finding aesthetic and thematic parallels between Beyoncé’s recent project Lemonade (2016) and Julie Dash’s cult-classic film Daughters of the Dust (1991) I draw a critical connection between Yellow Mary Peazant and Beyoncé, the prodigal child and the licentious “post-racial,” pop-star to argue that while Lemonade may not present the same critique of exclusionary Black womanhood present within Daughters of the Dust, reactions to the Beyoncé’s visual album and the “Formation” music video inadvertently demonstrate the longevity of harmful colorist prejudices and the disparaging of Black female sexual and creative agency within the Black community.

    Surviving Hardship Through Religion: Womanist Theology in Beyoncé’s Lemonade Surviving Hardship Through Religion: Womanist Theology in Beyoncé’s Lemonade Hanan Beyene Abstract In 2016, Beyoncé’s Lemonade premiered during a time of high political, social, and radical tension. Knowles creates an album that is not just about her, but also exhibits pride in blackness while revealing her vulnerability. Beyoncé exposed issues surrounding not only her relationship to her husband but also the African American community. Viewing Lemonade through the lens of Delores S. Williams’s definition of Womanist testimony regarding the struggles of identity and survival, it is possible to trace this message retroactively through biblical times. Religious tools like The Curse of Ham caused a generational trauma within the African American commu- nity that created a brokenness that continues to resonate. Beyoncé exhibits religious allegories and themes through Womanist Theology by confronting the brokenness of her relationship in Lemonade. This includes the process of forgiving her husband’s infidelity and preserving her family unit. * Winner of the Deans’ Distinguished Essay Award Middle Tennessee State University 7 Scientia et Humanitas: A Journal of Student Research Introduction Racial division became an increasingly incendiary debate during 2016. A major focus in the cultural landscape was police brutality; in the previous year, black men faced the highest rate of U.S. police killings,1 which brought attention to the history of racism and discrimination within governmental institutions. The ongoing presidential race illustrated that “the political divide is much more about culture, identity, and race.”2 Numerous people decried the rhetoric of Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, who they claimed spouted hate and bigotry.

She doesn’t speak; she signifies. And her performance on Friday at a Hillary Clinton rally in Cleveland won excitement and dismay over the possibility that she had reached some partisan peak by announcing that she was officially “with her.” But anyone who caught her appearance on Wednesday at the 50th annual Country Music Association Awards in Nashville knew that while Friday might have been, for Mrs. Clinton, strategically necessary, it was also politically anticlimactic. Beyoncé had already been with her — three of them, in fact. Partway through the broadcast, she arrived flanked by the Dixie Chicks, a trio of once insanely popular, then absurdly disgraced musicians who keep on going anyway. Together, they did a version of Beyoncé’s twangy scorcher “Daddy Lessons,” with a little of the Dixie Chicks’ “Long Time Gone” woven in toward the end. As polemical television, it was powerfully sly. The Cleveland show — which also featured Beyoncé’s husband, Jay Z, and Chance the Rapper — reeked of a kind of political desperation. (The Clinton campaign hopes to get more young people and black people to the polls on Election Day.) But Beyoncé diverged from desperate.

    Raising the Bar: The Reciprocal Roles and Deviant Distinctions of Music and Alcohol in Acadiana by © Marion MacLeod A dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Ethnomusicology Memorial University of Newfoundland June, 2013 St. John 's, Newfoundland ABSTRACT The role of alcohol in musical settings is regularly relegated to that of incidental by­ stander, but its pervasive presence as object, symbol or subject matter in Acadian and Cajun performance contexts highlights its constructive capacity in the formation of Acadian and Cajun musical worlds. Individual and collective attitudes towards alcohol consumption implicate a wide number of cultural domains which, in this work, include religious display, linguistic development, respect for social conventions, and the historically-situated construction of identities. This research uses alcohol as an interpretive lens for ethnomusicological understanding and, in so doing, questions the binaries of marginal and mainstream, normal and deviant, sacred and profane, traditional and contemporary, sober and inebriated. Attitudes towards alcohol are informed by, and reflected in, all ofthese cultural conflicts, highlighting how agitated such categorizations can be in lived culture. Throughout the dissertation, I combine the historical examples of HatTy Choates and Cy aMateur with ethnographic examinations of culturally-distinct perfonnative habits, attitudes toward Catholicism, and compositional qualities. Compiling often incongruous combinations of discursive descriptions and enacted displays, my research suggests that opposition actually confirms interdependence. Central to this study is an assertion that levels of cultural competence in Cajun Louisiana and Acadian Nova Scotia are uneven and that the repercussions of this unevenness are musically and behaviourally demonstrated.

    8 Intimacy, Authenticity and ‘Worlding’ in Beyoncé’s Star Project Phoebe Macrossan At the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, African-American pop star Beyoncé Knowles-Carter (known professionally as Beyoncé) performed a 12-song medley from her self-titled visual album, Beyoncé (2013), recreating its imagery across moving stages, treadmills, giant screens and a large troupe of dancers. To open this typically large-scale performance, she said, ‘MTV, welcome to my world’. This choice of words is interesting because, as a dominant figure in the popular music scene, Beyoncé hardly need introduce herself. What this moment captures, however, is the increasing personal intimacy of Beyoncé’s stardom, and her transition to the active creation and ownership of an identifiable, holistic ‘world’. This chapter argues that Beyoncé’s stardom extends beyond constructing a star image through media texts (Dyer, 1998, p. 10). I argue that her star project, her ongoing construction and maintenance of her stardom is creating an intimate, identifiable, holistic world: ‘Beyoncé World’. I use the term ‘star project’ because there is no beginning, middle and end as suggested by a term like ‘star narrative’, and because worlding is more encompassing and widespread than the term ‘star image’ put forward by Richard Dyer (1998, p. 10), although it is a continuation of it. 137 POPULAR MUSIC, STARS AND STARDOM Beyoncé World is created and maintained primarily through Beyoncé’s music videos and visual albums, but also across her concerts, performances and public appearances, and her social media accounts and website. Therefore, Beyoncé World is primarily created through media images, but, importantly, it also includes public appearances, actions and performances outside these visual images.
