Stuart add en^ Preparation of the Code of Justinian, one part of a three-part presentation of Roman law published over the three-year period from 533 -535 A.D, had not been stymied by the occupation of Rome by the Rugians and the Ostrogoths. In most ways these occupations worked no material hardship on the empire, either militarily or civilly. The occupying Goths and their Roman counterparts developed symbiotic legal and social relationships, and in several instances, the new Germanic rulers sought and received approval of their rule both from the Western Empire, seated in Constantinople, and the Pope. Rugian Odoacer and Ostrogoth Theodoric each, in fact, claimed respect for Roman law, and the latter ruler held the Roman title patricius et magister rnilitum. In sum, the Rugians and the Ostrogoths were content to absorb much of Roman law, and to work only such modifications as were propitious in the light of centuries of Gothic customary law. -

Empire of Hope and Tragedy: Jordanes and the Invention of Roman-Gothic History Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Brian Swain Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Timothy Gregory, Co-advisor Anthony Kaldellis Kristina Sessa, Co-advisor Copyright by Brian Swain 2014 Abstract This dissertation explores the intersection of political and ethnic conflict during the emperor Justinian’s wars of reconquest through the figure and texts of Jordanes, the earliest barbarian voice to survive antiquity. Jordanes was ethnically Gothic - and yet he also claimed a Roman identity. Writing from Constantinople in 551, he penned two Latin histories on the Gothic and Roman pasts respectively. Crucially, Jordanes wrote while Goths and Romans clashed in the imperial war to reclaim the Italian homeland that had been under Gothic rule since 493. That a Roman Goth wrote about Goths while Rome was at war with Goths is significant and has no analogue in the ancient record. I argue that it was precisely this conflict which prompted Jordanes’ historical inquiry. Jordanes, though, has long been considered a mere copyist, and seldom treated as an historian with ideas of his own. And the few scholars who have treated Jordanes as an original author have dampened the significance of his Gothicness by arguing that barbarian ethnicities were evanescent and subsumed by the gravity of a Roman political identity. They hold that Jordanes was simply a Roman who can tell us only about Roman things, and supported the Roman emperor in his war against the Goths. -

Saving Severus: How Severus of Antioch’s Writings Survived in Greek Yonatan Moss N THE SUMMER of 536, following a failed attempt to reach a compromise between the advocates and opponents of the I Council of Chalcedon, Emperor Justinian came down reso- lutely on the Chalcedonian side. He issued a novella ordering all extant writings of Severus, exiled patriarch of Antioch and leading spokesman of the anti-Chalcedonian cause, to be burned.1 Possessors of Severus’ works faced harsh punishment and the hands of scribes found copying them were to be am- putated.2 The novella was to be distributed to all metropolitan bishops, who, in turn, were tasked with making sure it was pub- licly posted in each and every church throughout the Empire.3 1 The literature on Severus is large. Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th. -

VOX PATRUM 38 (2018) t. 69 Oleksandr KASHCHUK* THE PROMOTION OF MIAENERGISM AS A CHALLENGE TO IDENTITY OF NON-CHALCEDONIAN CHRISTIANITY The late Roman Empire of the sixth and seventh centuries had become thoroughly Christian. However, in course of time disagreement concerning Christian belief became the force on the basis of which the Empire was inter- nally divided into different branches. By the sixth century the most significant religious groups were known as Chalcedonians and non-Chalcedonians – pre- dominantly Miaphysites and Nestorians1. Each group developed its own sense of self-consciousness depending on Christological doctrine: on the one hand, the Chalcedonians confessed the two natures of Christ united in one person of God the Logos, on the other hand the Miaphysites believed in one nature of Christ and Nestorians proclaimed the two natures in Christ to be separated. It led to different senses of identity. This painful recycling of history should make him—and us—want to know what unhealable wound, what recurrent pathology, what cause too deep for journalists and politicians to discern draws men and women to their deaths again and again in such a place. The history of Rome, as has often been true in the past, has much to teach us. -

That is an extreme example of perfectionism, but it helps us appreciate the magnitude (and the hubris) of the goal Boethius set for himself in the Introduction to his translation of Aristotle’s De Interpretatione: translating, analyzing, and reconciling the complete opera of Plato and Aristotle.1 As “incom- parably the greatest scholar and intellect of his day,”2 Boethius may have had the ability and the energy his ambition required. But we will never know how much Boethius would have achieved as a philosopher if he had not suffered a premature death. In 523, less than a year after being named Magister Officiorum3 by King Theodoric, Boethius was charged with treason, hastily and possibly illegally tried, and executed in 526.4 Since the contemporary sources of information about the affair are vague and fragmented, the passage of nearly 1500 years has brought no consensus in explaining Boethius’ tragic fall from a brilliant intellectual and political career. Though disagreement still shrouds the details of every aspect of the case, from indictment to execution, I will argue that Theodoric was fully justified in perceiving Boethius as a traitor. Claims that age or emotional passion or military pressures diminished the King’s judgment are, in this instance, unacceptable. -
