Ma te pono Me te aroha – Through Faith and Love

Dear Parents/ Caregivers Kia Ora, Malo e Lelei, Talofa, Mabuhay, Greetings CHANEL SHIELD: JPC THIRD SUCCESSIVE WIN I congratulate the staff and students of John Paul College who won the Chanel Shield for a third successive year. I extend my thanks, in particular to Mrs Bloomfield our D.R.S, for her leadership and to Mr Davis, for the excellent menu he prepared. Apart from the competitive element, it is a unique opportunity for young Catholics to engage in our Catholic faith, which is at the core of all of our Catholic High Schools. JPC RUGBY I salute the players, coach, managers and supporters of our Under XV team and 1st XV, who play magnificently on Saturday to take a place in the finals. This is an outstanding achievement for a co- educational school and has not been done since 2013. SACRAMENTAL PROGRAMME If you, or anyone you know, is seeking to enrol at John Paul College, I urge you to make contact with the St Mary’s Parish office and register for a sacramental programme before we commence the 2020 enrolment process in 2019. I would encourage children to enrol in this course well before Year 6. TRACKING FOR SUCCESS IN NCEA Reports of NCEA results of secondary schools in New Zealand, confirm that John Paul College is a very high performing school and in fact, achieves results at the same level of a decile 9 or 10 school. The N.Z Herald named JPC as the top performing decile 7 secondary school in New Zealand with respect to pass rates at NCEA Level 2.

Part of our success story comes from the very close cooperation between parents and teachers. As we prepare students over the next ten weeks to complete their NCEA course, please ensure you continue to monitor your child’s progress and liaise with teachers. TAKING HOLIDAYS DURING TERM DETRIMENTAL TO STUDENT LEARNING It is essential that students remain in school during term time to get the full benefit of teaching. It is detrimental to student learning where parents take a holiday during term, often because of cheap flights. I respectfully request that unless there are exceptional circumstances, that you do not take your children on holiday during term time. God bless Patrick Walsh Principal

We are into the business end of the season now and both the 1st XV and the 2018 U15’s had home semi-finals in the weekend. The 1st XV were up against Trident and the U15’s played RBHS C.

The first game of the day saw the U15’s take on a different looking RBHS C team. They had played this team two weeks ago in the regular season and had a close loss at 48 – 40, so the JPC boys were looking to turn the result around. The JPC U15’s started strong and if they had held on to the ball would have had a commanding lead early on. They pushed out to a good lead at half time 12 – 0 and were looking the better team by far. Two first half injuries to Alex Fladgate and Taylor Law had a major impact on the structure of the team and with a squad of 18 saw some players shuffled into unfamiliar roles. RBHS came out firing in the 2nd half and took the game to JPC, racing out to a 24 – 12 lead. A stern talking to behind the posts by the team manager and the team showed a lot of spirit and heart and scored a try to take the score to 24 – 19. The RBHS team looked tired and those early morning training sessions came into play with JPC finishing strongly and scoring another try. 24 all with the conversion to come. The flags went up and they were back in the lead 26 – 24 with a couple minutes to play. RBHS were out on their feet and JPC finished the game strongly to take the win and a place in the final this Saturday.

Player of the day Ryan Eggers never stopped running and tackling. Campbell Haigh directed the team around the paddock and Reuben Schwalger scored the winning try and was tireless all game. All the team played their hearts out and are looking forward to the final. The coaching and management are extremely proud of the team and looking to the future there is a great nucleus of a 1st XV.

The 1st XV were playing Trident and they too were looking for revenge on an early season loss. A rousing haka set the challenge with all the U15’s and the combined 15 involved. They started well and scored an early try only for Trident to get a try back. 5 all and the game looked like it was going to be tense and close affair. The score board ticked over with both sides scoring. Halftime saw JPC lead 20 – 17 and the halftime talk was inspirational. JPC never took their foot off the throat and raced away with a very complete second half, leaving Trident scoreless and running the score out to 47 – 17. A final is on the horizon and the team, coaches, management and supporters look forward to this next weekend. It is rumoured to be the curtain raiser to the BOP Steamers game at the Rotorua International Stadium.

Great games from Russell Macken with blistering runs and thundering tackles, Sam Lennie was in a bustling mood with some damaging runs, many a time with Trident players hanging on to him. They were led well by the captain Patrick Humphrey, who tackled his heart out all game.

The JPC/Rep/Lakes team defaulted their final game of the season and finished mid table. This is a very important building team and looks awesome for the future of the 1st XV.

Thanks to all those who come and supported and we will see you next week.

Richard Haigh 027 7773445
