2018 NZSS ROGAINE CHAMPS TO RETURN TO ROTORUA Rogaining is becoming increasingly popular for schools. The challenge is for teams to try and visit as many checkpoints as you can in the time allowed. It tests your navigation skills, requires good strategic route choice, and also helps foster good team work. OBOP hosted the inaugural Rogaine Champs event in 2014. It was popular with, and enjoyed by, students all around the country. Since then it has been hosted by various orienteering clubs in different regions. Erin Swanson, OBOP President, says she remembers the great atmosphere and buzz when all the students were planning their courses before the event started. And there were some great smiles and stories at the end. "Whakarewarewa Forest is a great place for a fun navigation adventure with your friends, while still being very close to town and relatively safe. Everyone really enjoyed their day out, and the pizza afterwards seemed to be very popular with the students." "Whakarewarewa Forest is a mecca for runners and mountain bikers, and it is constantly changing. Even for competitors who have been in the forest before, they are bound to go to lots of new places and have to think very carefully about their strategy if they want to do well." At the NZSS Rogaine Champs there will be Junior and Senior Male, Female and Mixed categories on offer. Juniors will do a 3 hour event, and Seniors will have a 6 hour event. The Champs will be done on foot. Rogaine is also a big part of adventure racing, which includes Mountain Biking, Climbing, Kayaking and problem solving. Next event for some of these students is the Torpedo7 Junior Get2Go Challenge, It is like the Amazing Race, Treasure Island and Survivor, mixed together with adventure sports. INTERNATIONAL FOOD FESTIVAL AND CUPCAKE COMPETITION On the last day of Term 3 we held the International Food Festival and Cupcake Competition 2018. Eighteen countries from around the world were represented emphasising the multicultural nature of both Aotearoa and JPC. For the first time ever at JPC, the Rotorua Multicultural Society also participated in our celebration of unity through diversity. Members of the community put on demonstrations and showcased artefacts, instruments and traditional dress. This proved a visual taste of some of the cultures represented and included a beautiful dance performance from our own JPC Filipino dance group. Our thanks go to all who contributed to this new facet of the festival. Thank you also to all those teachers, students and members of our JPC family who put a fantastic effort into producing a wide range of delicious foods from around the world. From the humble Kiwi sausage sizzle and the delicious kumara chips on the New Zealand and Maori stalls to the amazing array of spicy noodles, dumplings and curry from the Asian continent and all the foods from the countries in-between! Everyone worked together and it resulted in something to suit a wide range of tastes and palates. It was also great to see the enthusiasm of those who supported the festival by buying and sampling tastes from around the world. The festival would not work if students and staff did not participate by buying and tasting the food on sale; so thank you to all those who bought food too. Thanks also go to Mrs Douglas and Mr Bloomfield who had the difficult task of choosing a winner from this year’s Disney themed cupcake competition. The cakes were judged on taste, adherence to the theme and overall decoration. It was a very close competition but the final winners were Eviarn and Grace (both 7SK) with their underwater themed, Finding Nemo, cakes. Second was Matthew with Joy and Sadness from Inside Out and third were Angika & Caitlan with a duo of Frozen and Beauty and the Beast cupcakes. Thank you also to Mr Walsh who contributed to the judging and helped to decide the final winner in a very close competition. Well done to all the students who entered, and thank you to them and others who also contributed to the Cupcakes for Cambodia stall. The final total raised by JPC International Food Festival 2018 was just over $2000. The money raised will be split between PoThum La Sallian school in Cambodia (where twelve year 12 students carried out service last May) and Papua New Guinea where our former Catholic Character Captain, Hamish Dykstra, is currently spending a year as part of the La Sallian Share the Mission project. Thank you for helping us to celebrate both our diversity as people from a diverse range of cultures, and our unity as Children of God working together to promote God’s love for us all. Mrs Bloomfield.

A CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX STORY In the arid region of central Madagascar, there is a remote area which received several cartons of OCC shoebox gifts. Older children were dancing obviously well-practised steps on top of a make-shift stage made of rough wood sitting on top of old oil barrels. The younger children were focused on following the mysterious cartons being laid out in front of the stage. The adults couldn’t help but be curious as well. This day could be a marker in the memory of these people. Who knows how often they would tell the story of when the village was visited by foreigners who brought gifts and told about them Jesus and God’s love. A few of the children from the area received shoeboxes two years ago. They became so interested in Jesus that they began walking over 16 kilometres to the nearest church every Sunday. One of the children’s grandfathers was the community witch doctor, but when he saw the children were walking so far, he donated some of his land so that a church could be built in the village. Pastor Roger moved to Ampananganana, a village of 200 homes, to help start the church. The community itself put up the mud walls.

That afternoon there was a graduation for 40 children, aged seven-14, who had completed The Greatest Journey discipleship program. The midday wind picked up, blowing dirt and sand through the doors of the church. The sun was beaming in through holes in the thatched roof. The children wiped dust from their eyes as they recited memory verses and proudly sang songs they had learned in the discipleship classes. One of the songs was written by Pastor Rodger, who found The Greatest Journey instrumental in teaching the children about the Good News of Jesus. “(The teaching materials) were helpful to me because they gave me an overview of the steps of the Gospel,” he said. “The Greatest Journey teacher training was precious to me to help reach many children.”

Pastor Rodger said that The Greatest Journey booklets gave him spiritual growth and this is helping him be a better leader. “It was very clear, the message of the Gospel,” he said. “In fact, in every book there is a call to faith that I can use to encourage the children. At the end of the second booklet, many of the children came to Christ.” In the very first group of children that Pastor Rodger took through The Greatest Journey, 38 of the 40 children gave their life to Christ. “Two are still unsure, but we’re praying for them,” he said.
