Ma te pono Me te aroha – Through Faith and Love

Dear Parents/ Caregivers Kia Ora, Malo e Lelei, Talofa, Mabuhay, Greetings ACADEMIC AUDIT: YEARS 11-13 At present Deans, Faculty Heads and teachers are identifying students at risk of the following: 1. Insufficient credits to pass NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 2. Not achieving University Entrance 3. Insufficient literacy and numeracy credits 4. Not handing in assignments or seeking reassessment opportunities If you are contacted by school staff on any of the above, please give them your full cooperation and support. It is in your child’s best interests. SCHOOL FEES & ATTENDANCE DUES It is important to note that there are two distinct charges to parents whose children attend John Paul College. Attendance dues are charged by the Hamilton Diocese, largely for buildings, while the General Activity Contribution contributes to resources and running costs of the school. The Hamilton Diocese have spent well over $10million on buildings for JPC over the last decade, including the new technology block, costing $3.3million, which has been greatly appreciated by staff and students. We are also excited that the new Performing Arts Centre is progressing well to commence construction. God bless Patrick Walsh Principal La Sallian Quote: “Young people need good teachers, like visible angels” ~ St John Baptist De La Salle

John Paul College was in the finals for The Prime Ministers Award for the second year in a row.

This year we were in the final three schools for The Focus Award, showing Best Practice in providing inclusive education to all students.

The school provides a strong wrap around service to help all students succeed. The Need will not define us but it is what we do about the Need that will define us.

John Paul College in Rotorua under The leadership of Mrs Paulene Walsh and Mrs Erika Lock, RTLB, created the first Community of Learning register. This register shows the Needs of our school and the Faith Based COL which is made up of two secondary schools and five primary schools.

The work at John Paul College and the creation of a COL register has been stated as trailblazing work.

The Needs shown in the Register are providing the basis of the Professional Development that is being offered. The Rotorua Community is coming together to provide a financial contribution to PD. This enables all the community to attend this PD for only a gold coin. JPC is very grateful for this support.

It takes a "Village to Educate a Child". Everyone needs to be on the same page together. All teachers, all students, whanau, and the community working together.

John Paul College is proud to be a leader in this area.

GIRLS4TECH EDUCATION PROGRAMME Mastercard hosted its signature ‘Girls4Tech’ education programme on Friday 27 July for the year 8 girls. The programme aims to encourage young girls to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects at school and in later education.

The Mastercard Girls4Tech team set up three interactive stations in the school hall – Cryptology, Algorithm and All Things Digital where they taught the girls fun and engaging activities such as learning fraud detection techniques; discovering how digital convergence, Near Field Communications (NFC) and even biometrics can simplify life and showing how algorithms are everywhere and can help us solve all sorts of problems.

There was also a special guest appearance from Fletcher Tabuteau, Deputy Leader of New Zealand First, who presented the 91 girls with certificates. The Rotorua Daily Post also attended the event and interviewed our very own year 8 students Angika Gunarathna and Maddie Hsee for its NZ Herald story, which was also published in the Rotorua Daily Post. THE ROTARY NATIONAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FORUM Applications are being sought from high achieving Year 12 Science, Mathematics and Technology students for The Rotary National Science & Technology Forum to be held in Auckland 12 – 26 January 2019. Over the years, the forum has provided many students with an initial taste of university life and introduced them to the wide range of Science and Technology studies available at university level. Most of the past students have gone on to excel in undergraduate and post-graduate studies as well as in their careers. The focus of the forum is on providing a strong, well balanced academic programme, mixed with a range of sporting and leisure activities, work-place visits and the opportunity to develop friendships with peers who have similar interests and abilities. With the assistance of our sponsors, we are able to accept the costs of bringing students to Auckland, to feed and accommodate them in comfort and provide most of what is necessary for their instruction, leisure and entertainment for two weeks. The fee is set at $1795 per student and while it is anticipated that students will pay part of this fee, most Rotary Clubs are able to assist to a greater or lesser extent. Full details of the application and selection process have been sent to your Head of Science.
