Chapter 4: Editing Film 125: The Textbook © Lynne Lerych The general idea behind editing in narrative film is the coordination of one shot with another in order to create a coherent, artistically pleasing, meaningful whole. The system of editing employed in narrative film is called continuity editing – its purpose is to create and provide efficient, functional transitions. Sounds simple enough, right?1 Yeah, no. It’s not really that simple. These three desired qualities of narrative film editing – coherence, artistry, and meaning – are not easy to achieve, especially when you consider what the film editor begins with. The typical shooting phase of a typical two-hour narrative feature film lasts about eight weeks. During that time, the cinematography team may record anywhere from 20 or 30 hours of film on the relatively low end – up to the 240 hours of film that James Cameron and his cinematographer, Russell Carpenter, shot for Titanic – which eventually weighed in at 3 hours and 14 minutes by the time it reached theatres. Most filmmakers will shoot somewhere in between these extremes. No matter how you look at it, though, the editor knows from the outset that in all likelihood less than ten percent of the film shot will make its way into the final product. As if the sheer weight of the available footage weren’t enough, there is the reality that most scenes in feature films are shot out of sequence – in other words, they are typically shot in neither the chronological order of the story nor the temporal order of the film. -
ASPECT RATIO Aspect Ratios Are One of the More Confusing Parts of Video
ASPECT RATIO Aspect ratios are one of the more confusing parts of video, although they used to be simple. That's because television and movie content was all about the same size, 4:3 (also known as 1.33:1, meaning that the picture is 1.33 times as long as it is high). The Academy Standard before 1952 was 1.37:1, so there was virtually no problem showing movies on TV. However, as TV began to cut into Hollywood's take at the theater, the quest was on to differentiate theater offerings in ways that could not be seen on TV. Thus, innovations such as widescreen film, Technicolor, and even 3-D were born. Widescreen film was one of the innovations that survived and has since dominated the cinema. Today, you tend to find films in one of two widescreen aspect ratios: 1. Academy Standard (or "Flat"), which has an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 2. Anamorphic Scope (or "Scope"), which has an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Scope is also called Panavision or CinemaScope. HDTV is specified at a 16:9, or 1.78:1, aspect ratio.If your television isn't widescreen and you want to watch a widescreen film, you have a problem. The most common approach in the past has been what's called Pan and Scan. For each frame o a film, a decision is made as to what constitutes the action area. That part of the film frame is retained, and the rest is lost.. This can often leave out the best parts of a picture. -

The Subject - The Dance is the Star When you film, frame and light the Dance, the primary subject is the Dance and the related movement, not the dancers, not the scenography, not the music, just the Dance nothing else. The Dance is about movement not about positions: when you film the dance you are filming the movement not a sequence of positions and in order to completely comprehend this concept you must understand what movement is: like the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze said “w e always tend to confuse movement with traversed space…” 1. The movement is the act of traversing, when you film the Dance you film an act not an aestheticizing image of a subject. At the beginning it is difficult to understand how to film something that is abstract like the movement but with practice you will start to focus on what really matters and you will start to forget about the dancers. Movement is life and the more you can capture it the more the characters are alive therefore more real in a way that you can almost touch them, almost dance with them. The Dance is a movement with a rhythm and when you film it you have to become part of the whole rhythm, like when you add an instrument to a music composition, the vocabulary of cinema is just another layer on the whole art work. -

Definitions: Wide Shot (or Establishing Shot) Medium Shot Close-up Extreme Close-up Pan –Right or left movement of the camera Tilt –Up or down movement of the camera Zoom –Change in focal length (magnification) of the lens V/O –Voice-over, narration not synchronized with video SOT –Sound on Tape, Interview audio synchronized with video B-Roll -Refers to the earlier days of film when you had two rolls of film – A and B – and you had to edit them together. A-roll is the main subject of your shot, with audio such as an interview with someone or SOT (Sound on Tape synchronized with the video). B-roll is the background video for your film, often just video over which you’ll lay an audio track (such as the person talking in the A-roll). Nat Sound (Wild Sound) –Natural sound recorded with B-Roll This is video that has some natural background noise – traffic on a street, birds chirping in a park, etc. This audio can add depth and impact to a two-dimensional video tape. 2-Shot –Shot of the interview subject and the person asking the questions Reverse Angle –Straight-on shot of the person asking the questions Use a Tripod Use a tripod to get a steady shot, particularly if you’re shooting something that is not moving or a formal interview. Shaky video, especially in close-ups, can cause the viewer to become dizzy, even nauseous. A simple, silent (no dialogue) scene where somebody walks into the shot, does something and then leaves is perfect. Once you’ve shot your first film, watch it. What do you like/dislike about it? Save this first attempt. We’ll be asking you to return to it later. (If you have already done this and saved your films, you don’t need to do this again.) Professional filmmakers divide scenes into shots. They set up their camera and frame the first shot, film the action and then stop recording. This process is repeated for each new shot until the scene is completed. The clips are then put together in the edit to make one continuous scene. Whatever equipment you work with, if you use professional techniques, you can produce quality films that look cinematic. The table below gives a description of the main shots, angles and movements used by professional filmmakers. Glossary of Digital Video Terms 24P: 24 frame per second, progressive scan. This has been the frame rate of motion picture film since talkies arrived. It is also one of the rates allowed for transmission in the DVB and ATSC television standards – so they can handle film without needing any frame-rate change (3:2 pull-down for 60 fields-per-second systems or running film at 25fps for 50 Hz systems). It is now accepted as a part of television production formats – usually associated with high definition 1080 lines, progressive scan. A major attraction is a relatively easy path from this to all major television formats as well as offering direct electronic support for motion picture film and D-cinema. 24Psf: 24 frame per second, progressive segmented frame. A 24P system in which each frame is segmented – recorded as odd lines followed by even lines. Unlike normal television, the odd and even lines are from the same snapshot in time – exactly as film is shown today on 625/50 TV systems. This way the signal is more compatible (than normal progressive) for use with video systems, e.g. VTRs, SDTI or HD-SDI connections, mixers/switchers etc., which may also handle interlaced scans. It can also easily be viewed without the need to process the pictures to reduce 24-frame flicker. 3:2 pull-down: Method used to map the 24 fps of film onto the 30 fps (60 fields) of 525-line TV, so that one film frame occupies three TV fields, the next two, etc. It means the two fields of every other TV frame come from different film frames making operations such as rotoscoping impossible, and requiring care in editing. -

Beginners Guide to Video - JMBS This guide is intended for anyone who wishes to use a video camera for news gathering or documentary work. Although it is written for the complete novice there should also be something here for the more experienced. Camera Technique Books have been dedicated to this but there are a few things that are very useful to consider. • The most reliable way of getting good shots is to turn the lens to as wide an angle as possible and get as close to the subject/action as possible. • Treat the camera as if it were a stills camera. Avoid panning(left/right), tilting(up/down) and zooming unless it is absolutely necessary. Simple shots are best and they are easier to pull off. • Use a tripod or monopod wherever possible and if not try to find something to lean against. • If you have to change the camera angle do it as slowly (and smoothly) as possible. It is much better to have something briefly out of shot than to be continually/rapidly changing the camera angle. Ideally it should be done so slowly that the audience does not notice. • If you are panning over a long distance or following quick moving action generally speaking things should be in shot for at least five seconds. • When shooting without a tripod bear in mind the wider the angle you are shooting the steadier the shot. If possible move in closer rather than zooming in. To help steady the camera push the eyepiece to your eye and press your elbows against the bottom of your ribs. -

Videography Terminology Continuity This is an important concept to keep in mind during recording of video/audio and later in post-production. Continuity means that if something is in one position or state-of-being in one shot, it needs to be the same way in the next shot unless it has purposely been changed for storytelling purposes. Some examples of lack of continuity are changes in a subject’s clothing, hair style, body position, or position of objects on the set between two shots that are supposed to be occurring within the same time frame. Another example is when in one shot a subject is traveling in one direction, but in the next shot the movement is in the opposite direction. Continuity changes can also occur with audio if scenes are shot in different locations or at different times but are supposed to be occurring in the same location. Framing Your Shot Rule of thirds: Divide the image in the viewfinder into horizontal and vertical thirds like placing a tic-tac-toe grid over it. Place a key part of the image on one of the intersecting points. This keeps the picture interesting and creates a pleasingly balanced image. Head room: The space between the top of the head and the upper edge of the picture or television screen. Breathing room: The space in front of a person’s face when recorded in profile.
