Along the way, we stop at the small village of Ban Xanghai, where the local rice wine is distilled. We return to LuangPrabang in the afternoon, on the way we take a short drive to Ban Phanom, a small village well known for its hand weaving. o Afternoon Departure by road to the Khuang Xi Waterfalls. The waterfalls tumble over multi – tiered limestone formations into cool, clear pools ideal for swimming and relaxing. The All Lao Elephant Camp is set among lush vegetation on the banks of the Nam Khan River. Here you will be introduced to the protected Asian Elephants and given some information about the efforts to protect them. This camp has a total of 15 elephants and each one is only ridden for a maximum of 3 hours per day, which means that the animal welfare here is much better than at many other camps in the area. Most of the elephants have been rescued from a life of logging. Climb aboard for a scenic ride in the natural setting along the river. Enjoy the new perspective and the wonderful nature on this ride of approximately 1 hour. China 614000 [email protected] Abstract. This paper will rethink the meaning of the ‘spirit of the Giant Buddha’ through two aspects. One is to explain the processes of objectification of that spirit; and, revivifying the genius of the creator through analyzing the historical background, Buddhist culture and the natural environment when it was built. The second is to analyze how people or users maintain and enrich the spirit of the Giant Buddha through their understanding and transformation. It will argue that the spirit of Giant Buddha is composed by numerous tangible and intangible “significant forms”, they gathered and accumulated in specific ways to form the spirit of the Giant Buddha, and give the meaning, value and significance “to place”. The paper will point out current protection and management problems, and explore a holistic and appropriate conservation method. Finally, it will discuss on transmitting this spirit in a modern commercial society. Introduction The ‘spirit of place’ refers to the tangible and intangible elements, which give meaning, value and emotion to place. However, the tangible and intangible legacies have been dissociated for a long time due to the lack of recognition of an intangible cultural heritage during the process of protecting the material heritage. Further, the intangible one sometimes was damaged with an emotion of “goodwill” or “unconscious”. The protection of the Leshan Giant Buddha has continuously concentrated on the main body of Buddha statue.

In an attempt to go beyond a more traditional descriptive approach, the study aims at bringing forward a discussion about the definition, or rather the multiplicity of definitions, of the concept of heritage as such. The unavoidabe tension emanating from a modern western frame of thought being applied to the geographical and cultu- ral setting of the study provides an opportunity to develop a criticism of some of the assumptions underlying our current definitions of heritage. For this particular study, heritage is defined as to include stories, places and things. It is a heri- tage that is complex and ambiguous, because the stories are parallel, the definitions and percep- tions of place are manifold and contested, and the things and their meaning appear altered, de- pending on what approach to materiality is used. The objective is not to propose how to identify and manage such a complex heritage.
