This study aimed at examining how tourism growth has impacted the built environment of Luang Prabang, Lao PDR through an empirical approach. Luang Prabang has received a critical warning from World Heritage Committee for the escalating development pressure on its vulnerable landscape. Hence, this study examined two aspects: (1) the spatial pattern of the increase of touristic usage; and (2) the relation between the increase of touristic usage and the significant changes in the built environment. For this, geographical information systems (GIS) are combined with statistical methods such as logistic regression and chi-square test of independence. The results affirmed that the change from other types of usage to touristic usage in existing buildings has a higher chance to occur along riverbank areas than in the middle of the peninsula in the core heritage area.

  • Study of the Provincial Context in Oudomxay 1
RESIREA – Study of Oudomxay provincial context Study of the provincial context in Oudomxay 1 – Geography and demography Oudomxay province is a province in the north of Laos, covering an area of 15,370 km2 about 85% of which is mountainous. Oudomxay is divided in 7 districts, with totally 584 villages, 42 419 families which means 263 000 people. The villages are relatively small and mainly concentrated along the roads. The population density is quite low (17 people per km2). The exact localization of the villages was quite difficult, and has been done by crossing different sources of information. The province borders China and Phongsaly province to the north, Luang Namtha and Bokeo province to the west, Xayaboury province to the south and Luang Prabang to the east. Although Oudomxay has only a short international border with China, it is a transit point between China, Vietnam and Thailand, with a large flow of products. Yet, only 66% of the households have a road access in comparison to the northern regional average of 75% and national average of 83%. 14 ethnic groups are present in the province, 85% are Khmu (who are generally included in Lao Theung ethnic group) and Lao Loum are in minority. MEM Lao PDR RESIREA – Study of Oudomxay provincial context 2- Agriculture and local development The main agricultural crop practiced in Oudomxay provinces is corn, especially located in Houn district. Oudomxay is the second province in terms of corn production: 84 900 tons in 2006, for an area of 20 935 ha. These figures have increased a lot within the last few years.

Being together as ASEAN will help members on social, economic and political development without border issues as ASEAN slogan “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”. Rotating of investment, labor, body of knowledge, languages and culture among ASEAN countries is the most obvious phenomenon. Laos or Laos PDR is the closet neighbor of Thailand where there are shared traditions and cultures, for example, language, food, dressing, or even some traits and beliefs. Laos is still mysterious and magical country in terms of nature and culture which are well-preserved. 102 ~ 102 ~ Laos is known as “a small country” since there is a smaller number of population comparing to Thailand and Vietnam, yet Laos is full of crystal clear rivers and scenic mountains waiting for people to discover.

  • Xaignabouli Province, Laos, January 2012 by Yuan
Road Trip with Child's Dream Laos Laos is beautiful. The people are very poor, yet so peaceful and friendly. Everywhere we go, everybody always carries a smile on the lips. Our trip takes me from Vientiane to Vang Vieng, Sainyabuli, Luang Prabang and then to the North of Laos. sunrise over Van Vieng We visit many different provinces, schools, education ministers and local communities. In some places, CD has already built a school so we're checking on the progress. In other areas, we are told that a school needs to be built/restored, so we pass by for an evaluation. Then again, we are meeting up with other NGOs to learn about potential collaboration possibilities in order to profit from synergies. There is also a lot of relationship-building that needs to be done with local government officials or village heads. It's a very diverse, busy trip filled with meetings, visits and talks. The schools that we visit are all completely different. There are primary schools, secondary schools and high schools... some schools consist of wooden piles and a few blades of grass on the roof. There are no tables, the students are squeezed together on some benches, the "blackboards" are filled with holes... and the teacher is often not present, the students study on their own. what do they do during rainy season, I wonder? Other schools have real walls and their own water filter system (which purifies the water from the wells, so that the children can drink it). The students wear pretty school uniforms, farm in their own garden (where they cultivate vegetables), play pétanque or volleyball and sip fresh young coconut juice (the coconuts grow in the school area).

  • Rethinking, Protecting and Transmitting the Tangible and Intangible Buddhist Spirit of Leshan Giant Buddha
Rethinking, Protecting and Transmitting the Tangible and Intangible Buddhist Spirit of Leshan Giant Buddha Jiaming Luo, Chunjing Zeng 1# Tianxing Road, Leshan City, Sichuan Province P. R. China 614000 [email protected] Abstract. This paper will rethink the meaning of the ‘spirit of the Giant Buddha’ through two aspects. One is to explain the processes of objectification of that spirit; and, revivifying the genius of the creator through analyzing the historical background, Buddhist culture and the natural environment when it was built. The second is to analyze how people or users maintain and enrich the spirit of the Giant Buddha through their understanding and transformation. It will argue that the spirit of Giant Buddha is composed by numerous tangible and intangible “significant forms”, they gathered and accumulated in specific ways to form the spirit of the Giant Buddha, and give the meaning, value and significance “to place”. The paper will point out current protection and management problems, and explore a holistic and appropriate conservation method. Finally, it will discuss on transmitting this spirit in a modern commercial society. Introduction The ‘spirit of place’ refers to the tangible and intangible elements, which give meaning, value and emotion to place. However, the tangible and intangible legacies have been dissociated for a long time due to the lack of recognition of an intangible cultural heritage during the process of protecting the material heritage. Further, the intangible one sometimes was damaged with an emotion of “goodwill” or “unconscious”. The protection of the Leshan Giant Buddha has continuously concentrated on the main body of Buddha statue.
