You are then free to stroll around the town. Overnight in Vientiane DAY 2 VIENTIANE – CITY TOUR – BUDDHA PARK (B/L/D) In the morning, we will first visit Wat Si Muang, which is very famous for its supernatural power. After that drive to Buddha Park which takes around 45 minutes away. On the way, stop and take photos of the Friendship Bridge which was built by the Australian government in 1994 and links Laos and Thailand. Arrive at Buddha Park and enjoy a stroll around the park. Also known as Xieng Khuan, this unusual park is filled with over 200 Buddhist and Hindu statues. The quiet and tranquil setting along the Mekong River is a contrast to the slightly eccentric sculptures which were built in 1958 by a Laos’s shaman. The concrete sculptures are bizarre but intriguing, sitting majestically in the peaceful park. After visiting Buddha Park, start the drive back to Vientiane. En route, stop at Mai Savanh to explore the traditional textiles of the Lao people. This shop specializes in high quality silk products and involves several families in their process, from the northern province of Luang Nam Tha Province and the southern provinces of Attapeu and Sekong. (Note: Mai Savanh is closed on Saturday & Sunday) Start the afternoon with a visit to That Luang, the holiest site in Laos. Constructed by King Setthethirat in the 16th century, the temple is resplendent as the sun is shines upon its towering golden spire. Then, enjoy a panoramic view over the city as you climb the stairs to the top of Patuxai, Vientiane’s own “Arc de Triomphe”. Continue down Lane Xang Avenue the serene Wat Sisaket, the only temple left intact after the Siamese (Thai) invasion in 1828. It is one of the most beautiful temples in the capital, and its breezy teak covered hallways are filled with thousands of miniature Buddha statues. Continue on to the nearby Wat Phra Keo. Used as a religious museum, Wat Phra Keo displays a collection of both Lao and Khmer works of art. Overnight in Vientiane DAY 3 VIENTIANE – LUANG PRABANG – KUANG SI WATERFALLS (B/L/D) After breakfast, we will take the morning flight to Luang Prabang. Upon arrival, we transfer directly to the beautiful Kuang Si Waterfall where you can cool off with a refreshing swim in the pools or walk along the forest trails. Before returning to Luang Prabang, we stop to visit the Kuang Si Falls Butterfly Park (closed on Tuesday), one of the must- visit spots, where you can have an optional 15 minute tour to learn about butterflies and local flora. Laos is also known for its traditional crafts, we will take a short visit to the Ock Pop Tock Living Craft Center, where you will have a short tour so you get information about Silk, about weaver, about the Women that work in the Centre. Arriving back to city center, we ascend the 329 steps to the top of Phousi Hill for a panoramic sunset view of the city and the Mekong River. The tour ends after a visit to the famous Night Market, where you can find a lovely collection of handmade textiles made by local and hilltribe people surrounding Luang Prabang. Overnight in Luang Prabang DAY 4 LUANG PRABANG – PAK OU CAVES (B/L/D) An optional early start gives you the fantastic opportunity to participate in the daily morning rituals of saffron-clad monks collecting offerings of Alms (ubiquitous sticky rice) from the faithful residents. This tradition is very unique in Laos, being the only Buddhist nation still preserving the procession. From there, we will take a short visit to the morning local market near the Royal Palace. At the market, you can find anything from rice, to fresh vegetables, to steamed fish, frogs, and anything else that might be the day’s catch, just set up on the ground, this is what the locals do every day. This is really the chance for you to get a real flavor of the local culture. After breakfast at the hotel, you will first visit Royal Palace Museum, which hosts a range of interesting artifacts. We then embark on the a leisure cruise upstream on the Mekong River, which also gives us a breathtaking view of the tranquil DEKS AIR TRAVEL & TOURS PTE LTD 300 BEACH ROAD #13-05 THE CONCOURSE SINGAPORE 199555 TEL: (65) 6338 8188 FAX: (65) 6338 7810 Page 1 of 3 Email: [email protected] countryside, before reaching the mysterious Pak Ou Caves, two linked caves crammed with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by pilgrims. The article is part of the research results on the beliefs around Naga in Nongkhai province, Thailand. The research aimed to study the history of the belief in Naga, and the area in Nongkhai province where the belief is still prominent, through non-participatory observation, non-structured interviews, and the study of the related documents and research. The study revealed the Nongkhai people have been passing down the myth and the belief of Naga, through storytelling from their ancestors to the current generation, as a way to maintain their faith in Buddhism and to draw the connection between the belief and their settlements. Currently, the myth is being passed on to the tourists who show an interest in knowing more about the tradition and culture. The "Naga fireballs" phenomenon, which had become a majestic festival that reflects the identity of the children of the City of Nagas, is also being passed on this way.

  • Preserving Temple Murals in Isan: Wat Chaisi, Sawatthi Village, Khon Kaen, As a Sustainable Model1
Preserving Temple Murals in Isan: Wat Chaisi, Sawatthi Village, Khon Kaen, as a Sustainable Model1 Bonnie Pacala Brereton Abstract—Wat Chaisi in Sawatthi village, Sawatthi District, located about twenty kilometers from the bustling provincial capital of Khon Kaen, is a unique example of local cultural heritage preservation that was accomplished solely through local stakeholders. Its buildings, as well as the 100 year-old murals on the ordination hall, have been maintained and are used regularly for merit- making and teaching. The effort was initiated by the abbot and is maintained through the joint effort of the wat community, Khon Kaen Municipality, and various individuals and faculties at Khon Kaen University. This paper will examine the role of local leadership in promoting local cultural heritage. Introduction Of the more than 40,000 Buddhist wats in Thailand seventeen percent, or nearly 7,000, are abandoned.2 Of those still in use, many are becoming increasingly crammed with seemingly superfluous new structures, statues, and decorations, funded by people seeking fame or improvement in their karmic status. Still others are thriving because of the donations they attract through their association with what is sometimes called “popular Buddhism,” a hodgepodge of beliefs in magical monks, amulets, saints, and new rituals aimed at bringing luck and financial success (Pattana 2012). Yet countless others are in a moribund state, in some cases tended by one or two elderly, frail monks who lack the physical and financial resources to maintain them. Both situations are related to the loss of cultural heritage, as countless unique 1 This paper is adapted from one presented at the Fifth International Conference on Local Government, held in Palembang, Indonesia, September 17-19, 2014.

Being together as ASEAN will help members on social, economic and political development without border issues as ASEAN slogan “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”. Rotating of investment, labor, body of knowledge, languages and culture among ASEAN countries is the most obvious phenomenon. Laos or Laos PDR is the closet neighbor of Thailand where there are shared traditions and cultures, for example, language, food, dressing, or even some traits and beliefs. Laos is still mysterious and magical country in terms of nature and culture which are well-preserved. 102 ~ 102 ~ Laos is known as “a small country” since there is a smaller number of population comparing to Thailand and Vietnam, yet Laos is full of crystal clear rivers and scenic mountains waiting for people to discover.

  • Rethinking, Protecting and Transmitting the Tangible and Intangible Buddhist Spirit of Leshan Giant Buddha
Rethinking, Protecting and Transmitting the Tangible and Intangible Buddhist Spirit of Leshan Giant Buddha Jiaming Luo, Chunjing Zeng 1# Tianxing Road, Leshan City, Sichuan Province P. R. China 614000 [email protected] Abstract. This paper will rethink the meaning of the ‘spirit of the Giant Buddha’ through two aspects. One is to explain the processes of objectification of that spirit; and, revivifying the genius of the creator through analyzing the historical background, Buddhist culture and the natural environment when it was built. The second is to analyze how people or users maintain and enrich the spirit of the Giant Buddha through their understanding and transformation. It will argue that the spirit of Giant Buddha is composed by numerous tangible and intangible “significant forms”, they gathered and accumulated in specific ways to form the spirit of the Giant Buddha, and give the meaning, value and significance “to place”. The paper will point out current protection and management problems, and explore a holistic and appropriate conservation method. Finally, it will discuss on transmitting this spirit in a modern commercial society. Introduction The ‘spirit of place’ refers to the tangible and intangible elements, which give meaning, value and emotion to place. However, the tangible and intangible legacies have been dissociated for a long time due to the lack of recognition of an intangible cultural heritage during the process of protecting the material heritage. Further, the intangible one sometimes was damaged with an emotion of “goodwill” or “unconscious”. The protection of the Leshan Giant Buddha has continuously concentrated on the main body of Buddha statue.
