Biography Commodore Anders Friis Royal Danish Navy Commander TF 474, Operation AGENOR Commodore Anders Friis grew up in Maribo, Denmark. He joined the Danish navy in 1986 and graduated from the Royal Danish Naval Academy in 1990. Upon his graduation Commodore Friis served in the submarines where he held a number of different positions including executive officer. In 1997 Commodore Friis was selected to attend the Norwegian Submarine Commanding Officer Qualifying Course and subsequently got his first command at sea as Commanding Officer of the submarine HDMS SAELEN. This was followed by command on board HDMS TUMLEREN until 2001. After nearly four years as submarine commander, Commodore Friis attended the senior staff course and was promoted to the rank of Commander in 2002. From 2002 to 2004 Commodore Friis served as the Commanding Officer of the Danish Navy Special Forces. In 2004 Commodore Friis transferred to the Danish Defense Command’s executive office to serve as aide-de-camp to the Danish Chief of Defense. After two years at the Danish Defence Command, Commodore Friis was appointed as Executive Officer of HDMS ABSALON, and shortly after, in 2007, Commodore Friis was promoted to Commander s.g. and became program manager at the Defense Acquisition and Logistics. The following four years Commodore Friis was in charge of developing and building the IVER HUITFELDT class frigates for the Royal Danish Navy. In March 2011 Commodore Friis was appointed Commanding Officer of HDMS ESBERN SNARE and deployed to the Horn of Africa to carry out anti-piracy operations as part of Task Force 508, Operation Ocean Shield (OOS). In 2012. Commodore Friis and his crew conducted a second deployment to OOS on board the HDMS ABSALON. During these deployments Commodore Friis and his crew carried out several apprehensions of suspected pirates and stood witness in the following prosecutions. After two years as Commanding Officer at sea Commodore Friis became Head of Coordination at the Danish Joint Defense Command Executive Office responsible for providing support to the Danish Chief of Defense and the Chief of the Defense Staff. In April 2014 Commodore Friis was promoted to Captain (Navy) and Head of Stabilisation Engagement within the Danish Home Guard. In close cooperation with the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the stabilisation engagement team contributed to capacity building, civil reconstruction and other international contributions. In addition to the job as Head of Stabilisation Engagement, Commodore Friis was in charge of implementing a new HR strategy concerning the future use of the Home Guard volunteers as wells as the reservists in the Danish Armed Forces. In February 2017 Commodore Friis became Deputy Commander of the Joint Arctic Command in Nuuk, Greenland. The command’s main task is surveillance, assertion of sovereignty and military defence of Greenland and the Faroe Islands and is, besides the HQ in Nuuk, represented different places in North, East and South Greenland, at the Faroe Islands as well as in Denmark. In the second half of 2018 Commodore Friis was commander of Standing NATO Maritime Group ONE. Besides providing NATO with an immediate operational response capability, SNMG1 participated in several exercises among them the NATO exercise Trident Juncture 2018. In January 2019 Commodore Friis assumed command of 2nd Danish Squadron with the primary responsibility for mobilize and train the Danish frigates and mine counter units. Anders Friis is married to Laila Reenberg, and together they have five children .
