Cattle sales, ploughing by oxen, the increase in cattle numbers and milk production appeared to be the most important returns (26, 21, 19 and 16 % of total gross returns, respectively). Local slaughter, manure and ox- power for transport played a minor role. The calculated costs were about a third of the gross returns. The net economic efficiency was calculated at RESSOURCES ANIMALES US$ 1.4 per ha per year. The kraal keeper's household (KKH), who owned 60 % of the herd, accrued 64 % from the total gross returns, incurred 73 % of total costs and accrued 58 % of the net returns. Average net returns to the KKH from cattle keeping, crops, sales of other farm produce and off-farm income were 50, 31, 6 and 13 % of the total household income, respectively. Legislative Chambers: Unicameral or Bicameral? Legislative Chambers: Unicameral or Bicameral? How many chambers a parliament should have is a controversial question in constitutional law. Having two legislative chambers grew out of the monarchy system in the UK and other European countries, where there was a need to represent both the aristocracy and the common man, and out of the federal system in the US. where individual states required representation. In recent years, unicameral systems, or those with one legislative chamber, were associated with authoritarian states. Although that perception does not currently hold true, there appears to be a general trend toward two chambers in emerging democracies, particularly in larger countries. Given historical, cultural and political factors, governments must decide whether one-chamber or two chambers better serve the needs of the country. Bicameral Chambers A bicameral legislature is composed of two-chambers, usually termed the lower house and upper house. The lower house is usually based proportionally on population with each member representing the same number of citizens in each district or region. The upper house varies more broadly in the way in which members are selected, including inheritance, appointment by various bodies and direct and indirect elections. Representation in the upper house can reflect political subdivisions, as is the case for the US Senate, German Bundesrat and Indian Rajya Sabha. Bicameral systems tend to occur in federal states, because of that system’s two-tiered power structure. Where subdivisions are drawn to coincide with other important societal units, the upper house can serve to represent ethnic, religious or tribal groupings, as in India or Ethiopia. -

Monthly Report January 19 – February 19, 2002 Summary • Zambia continued to experience a generally normal to below-normal rainy season. The dry spell in the southern parts of the country is of great concern as this has extended into some high- producing districts in Southern Province (Choma District), Western Province (Kaoma District) and the southern parts of Central Province. Crop yields in these areas are expected to be significantly reduced as a result. In some areas, crops have passed the permanent wilting point. • Zambia’s neighboring countries of Malawi, Mozambique, and particularly Zimbabwe have also experienced well-below normal rainfall this season. • Zambia’s food security situation continues to be of great concern, as the availability of staple food (maize) remains limited this late into the marketing season. Many households are also having problems purchasing maize as a result of exceptionally high prices. • The World Food Program started its relief food distribution program on January 24. So far, progress has been good despite the slow rate of relief food being brought into the country. Out of the estimated 42,000 MT requirement, only 12,000 MT has been purchased in South Africa for distribution to Zambia. Response from donors has been slow. As of February 12, 1,800 MT of maize was received from South Africa, all of which has been moved to the targeted districts. 1.0 Rainfall and Crop Condition 1.1 Rainfall Generally, the rainy season in Zambia so far has been characterized by normal to below-normal rainfall. Normal rainfall has been confined to northern and central parts of Zambia. -

Low- and middle- income countries are experiencing an obesity epidemic. There is growing evidence that the epidemic is on the increase in urban settings of developing countries. However, there is scanty information on the magnitude of this epidemic and its correlates in rural settings. The objective of the current study was to establish levels of overweight/obesity and its correlates in rural areas of Zambia. Designing interventions based on the correlates for overweight/obesity to reduce its prevalence may in turn lead to a reduction in the prevalence of hypertension. Methods: Cross sectional studies using a modified WHO Stepwise questionnaire were conducted. Logistic regression analyses were used to determine factors that were associated with overweight/obesity. Unadjusted odds ratios (OR) and adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and their 95% confidence intervals are reported. -
