Farmlime FARMLIME
FarmLime FARMLIME SUMMARY: armLime (Low-cost lime for small-scale farming) is a multidisciplinary research project that aims to increase the food security of small-scale farmers by improving their access to agricultural lime. FThe basic concept was to locate suitable carbonate rocks in farming districts and produce agricultural lime using a low cost method, eliminating the high transportation costs that farmers currently incur if they use lime. The work was carried out in the small-scale farming districts of Solwezi and Mkushi in northern Zambia. Perceptions The commonly held view is that small-scale farmers do not use agricultural lime because it is expensive, difficult to get hold of and they don't appreciate its benefits. A socio-economic survey carried out in Solwezi and Mkushi confirmed some of these views but indicated that farmers knew the benefits of using lime and that uptake of agricultural lime could be encouraged. The main constraints on the use of lime were the absence of soil testing and a lack of cash in the rural economy. Lime Resources Carbonate rocks occur throughout Zambia including the farming districts with highly acidic soils. A technical evaluation programme found that the dolomite from Solwezi and Mkushi is suitable for the production of agricultural lime. It has a Neutralising Value (NV) of 103–104% Calcium Carbonate Equivalent (CCE) and a magnesium oxide (MgO) content of 19–21%. Dolomite suitable for agricultural lime (minimum 80% NV and 6% MgO) occurs in seven of the nine Zambian provinces. Lime Production A low cost production method would be an ideal way to provide agricultural lime for small-scale farmers. -

CHIEFS AND THE STATE IN INDEPENDENT ZAMBIA Exploring the Zambian National Press •J te /V/- /. 07 r s/ . j> Wim van Binsbergen Introduction In West African countries such as Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone, chiefs have successfully entered the modern age, characterized by the independent state and its bureaucratie institutions, peripheral capitalism and a world-wide electronic mass culture. There, chiefs are more or less conspicuous both in daily life, in post-Independence literary products and even in scholarly analysis. In the first analysis, the Zambian situation appears to be very different. After the späte of anthropological research on chiefs in the colonial era,1 post-Independence historical research has added précision and depth to the scholarly insight concerning colonial chiefs and the precolonial rulers whose royal or aristocratie titles the former had inherited, as well as those (few) cases where colonial chieftaincies had been downright invented for the sake of con- venience and of systemic consistence all over the territory of the then Northern Rhodesia. But precious little has been written on the rôle and performance of Zambian chiefs öfter Independence. A few recent regional studies offer useful glances at chiefly affairs in 1. The Contribution of Dry Forests to Rural Poverty Reduction and to the National Economy: Zambia Technical Report Samuel Mulenga Bwalya Department of Economics, University of Zambia, Box 32379, Lusaka Tel# 260 1 290475, [email protected] The Contribution of Dry Forests to Rural Poverty Reduction and to the National Economy: Zambia Draft summary We have shown that forests and woodland resources contribute, on average, 21% to total production and income of rural households. Aggregating forest production and income to a national levels based on sample information is challenging task and by no means likely to be very precise and accurate. But scaling up sample estimates to the national level facilitates inter-sectoral comparisons and would sharpen our insights about the importance of forests and woodland resources in rural development and poverty reduction. Sample estimates and national statistics on the number of rural households is used to scale up and estimate the contribution of forest and woodland resources to the national rural household sector. We multiply the proportion of households harvesting a particular forest product by the total number of rural households in Zambia. This gives us an estimate of the number of rural household across the country that harvest forest a given forest product both for consumption within the household and for sell to obtain cash income. This estimate is then multiplied by the average value of each forest product harvested to obtain the total contribution of the forests sector to rural household economy. Because we ignore value addition along the supply chain and other forms of income and services households derive from forests, this estimate should be seen to represent the minimum contribution of forest resources to rural household sector. -

Strengthening the community network for continuum of care Mternl, Newborn nd Child Helth One Stop Service Project in Zmbi 2017 The project revitalized the Local Steering Committee (LSC), which was founded in the neighborhood health committee at each site, comprised of ten members, including health service providers, community leaders, traditional leaders, teachers, SMAGs and Youth PEs. Monitoring and supervision by the District Health Ofce to support community health educational activities involving SMAGs and Youth PEs was strengthened in collaboration with the LSCs and the Adolescent Health Committee. Each site formulated a community action plan for sustainability and started income generation activities such as goat rearing , vegetable cultivation, etc. to secure the cost for maternity waiting house and costs required for continuing community health educational activities.
