— Thomas Jefferson TO THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1974:

Your senior year will long be remembered as the year our form of government withstood the challenge of the century. As graduating seniors you, too, must meet the challenge of society. In your quest for success remember that every man, by consenting with others to form a government, puts himself under an obligation to everyone in that society to submit to the determination of the feeling of the majority. This principle was first and foremost in the keen minds of the framers of the Declaration of Independence. Our desire is that each of you experience life in its fullest, and our best wishes go with you.

John Marshall's English department, serving an interest and ability levels, offers students a wide variety of courses from extended studies in world, American and English literature, to short, in depth views of life and literature available as mini-courses. Academic Challenge teams have consistently brought honors to John Marshall. In 1973, Ann Cibula, John Heilman, and Robert Kessler reached the quarter final round. In doing so, they not only brought acclaim to the school, but also won a prize of books and a trophy for JMH. The 1974 team looks forward to even greater success. Throughout the ages, man has recognized and encouraged those who excel by establishing for them special honors. In modern times, election into the National Honor Society by the secondary school faculty honors students for their attainments already made in Leadership, Character, Scholarship and Service.

Chemistry And Physics

Concepts such as the chemical bond, the structure of matter and the matter-energy relationships, the periodicity of the chemical elements, the mole concept, equilibrium and chemical notation are the framework of Chemistry. Descriptive Chemistry is treated either as an out-growth of these concepts or as the point of entry. Physics experiments utilize such up to date equipment as air tables, Polaroid cameras, strobe light and photoelectric counters. Physics is a quatitative study of physical phenomena such as forces, energy and atomic structure. Experiments, movies, and film loops are used quite extensively. Microscope work, dissection, and quantitative experiments are the main areas covered during Biology laboratory periods. The chemistry and structure of cells, higher plants and animals, and finally evolution and ecology are considered in Biology classes.

Mathematics

John Marshall has three Mathematics programs. A student taking Vocational studies can select either Shop or Business Mathematics. Honor students take Geometry, Algebra 11, Trigonometry and Advanced Math one year earlier, and may then take Advanced Placement Calculus in their senior year. Regular college bound students take the above in the assigned grade.

Without the anxious participation of the girls and the outstanding leadership and influence of our gym teachers, this would be impossible. Each year more and more girls get involved in the extra-curricular activities that the Department offers. The Gym Leaders' Club, volleyball, and basketball are just a few. They enable the girls to enhance and put their skill and coordination to good use, while helping others to do the same. The girls have a lot of fun, and, at the same time, develop their skills and character toward a well-rounded personality.

Vocal Music

The Mixed Chorus, The Girl's Glee Club, The Marsh-Mellos and the Concert Chrous are open to all interested students at John Marshall. As a sophomore, the student begins in the Mixed Chorus or Girl's Glee Club. At the end of the year, auditions are held for Choir and Marsh-Mello perpestives. The students called back from these auditions will be in Choir next year. The Marsh-Mellos are then chosen from the Choir by the quality of the student's blending voice. The entire department performs twice a year: at Christmas time and during the Spring. Also, the Choir performs at the Commencement exercises. The Vocal Department has been acclaimed throughout the State with over fifteen members in the^Ml-City Choir, and outstanding representation in the All-Ohio Youth Choir. The Vocal Department owes many thanks to the director, Miss Mary E. Fogarty.

72 Spring Concert

One of the annual musical highlights at John Marshall is the Spring Parade. May 11, 1973 was no exception. Appearing at this concert was the Symphony Orchestra as well as the Symphonic, Stage, and combined Concert and Cadet Bands. As is the custom, the music performed represented a variety of periods and style . . . from Baroque to Rock. Enthusiastic applause demonstrated audience approval of Nicolia's Merry Wives of Windsor and Rossini's Italian in Algiers Overture. Also heard were the familiar strains from the hit shows, "My Fair Lady," "Oliver", and "Paint Your Wagon".

A The melodic sound of the French Horn adds harmony to the concert. B The combined Cadet and Concert Bands under the direction of Mr. Omar Blackman enthusiastically played such numbers as hit strains from "Oliver". C Top hits played by the Symphonic Band left the audience humming all the way home. D Lawrence Welk has nothing on Mr. George Wishneskey as he conducts the JMH Symphony Orchestra to a hit performance at the concert. E Marshall graduate, Miss Joyce Wondel sings an aria accompanied by the Symphonic Band. F Saxaphone and trombones wailing, the stage band swings into a number at last year's Spring concert.

73 74 Marching Band — 1973 The Marching Band begins the school year each August with two weeks of solid, exhausting, daily rehearsals in preparation for the colorful half-time football pageantry which follows in September. Except for occasional local parade appearances the Marching Band concludes its 9 or 10 games scheduled, and returns once again to the concert hall in the form of the Symphonic Band. The John Marshall Color Guard is one of the highest spirited precision teams in our school today. This fine unit is composed of eight regulars and two alternates. Their colorful and dignified pre-game appearance at each football game is always a spectacle to behold. Their precise and flashy gun twirling at half-time provide unmeasured entertainment for football and basketball fans alike. The Oompah Dolls, now enjoying their fifth year E of providing important bass music for the Marching and Symphonic Band, have acquired many faithful followers. One of the biggest events of the school year is Homecoming. Homecoming is sponsored by the Cheerleaders and includes the crowning of an elected queen and a dance. Two groups of girls behind all our teams are the Cheerleades and Lawyerettes. Both groups perform at football games, basketball games and rallies.

78 79 Student council

Student Council plays an important role in school activities. It gets the students involved in school matters that take place in and around school. Throughout the school year Student Council sponsors rallies and dances for the students to attend. This year there were rallies for every varsity sport and for the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. The Kick-Off Dance, Winter Formal and a Spring Rock Concert were sponsored by the JMH Student Council. Student Council also keeps the entire student body and faculty informed about upcoming events which involve students as well as faculty members in harmony.
