4 AAiirrccrraafftt FFllyyiinngg TTooddaayy Spad VII One of the best of the World War I fighter aircraft, this Spad VII comes to us courtesy of the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. The VII was designed and built in France, though some were also made in Britain. Powered by a 150 HP Hispano-Suiza engine, these aircraft could reach a top speed of 119 MPH and had a range of 225 miles. It was armed with one .303 caliber Vickers machine gun. We are fortunate to have this truly rare aircraft at our event. Defiant Designed by the legendary Burt Rutan, this is a most unusual looking aircraft. It is fitted with a canard –a small wing mounted at the front of the aircraft – instead of the usual horizontal stabilizer, making it appear to be “backwards”. The Defiant is a twin-engined aircraft, with one engine facing forward and the other facing aft, thus allowing greater stability in the event of engine failure. The Defiant carries three passengers plus the pilot, at a top speed of 216 MPH , with a range of over 1,100 miles.
Lockheed C-5 Galaxy Today we expect a flyover by a giant C-5 Galaxy, one of the world’s largest aircraft, with a wingspan of 225 ft and a gross weight of 769,000 lbs. This aircraft is based at Westover Field in Chicopee, MA, and is operated by the 439th Airlift Wing. Its range of 2,400 miles gives it the capability to deliver very large loads to military units around the globe. The entire nose section of the aircraft lifts upward to allow loading of many large loads up to and including tanks.
Yankee Clippers Formation Demonstration Team We welcome back the Clippers, who will demonstrate some of the basic military formations. All of their aircraft are RVs, the most popular brand of homebuilts. John Doran is lead pilot in his RV4, a former Navy F-14 Tomcat pilot. Scott Jordan, a former B-52 pilot, flies #2 position. Mark Cigal flies #3 position in his RV8: Mark is a Captain for American Airlines. Scott Jordan is the fourth team member, flying his new RV8.

18 Aircraft Navigation continued from page 9 In those early days, pilots were free to go town, and sometimes included an arrow pointing in the wherever they wished, without restrictions. There were direction of the next town or airport. Pilots were also few other airplanes aloft, so the chances of collision familiar with the many railroads, which allowed them to were slim. Airplanes were not equipped with radios. fly “IFR”, in other words, “I follow railroads”. When a pilot took off, he was essentially out of touch until he landed safely. And because good navigation wasn’t available, many pilots were lost. If the aircraft failed to arrive at its planned destination, no one could know whether it had crashed or simply become lost and landed in a field. Pilots Now Use GPS for Accurate Navigation Today’s pilots are taught to navigate by visual cues and by dead reckoning, but only as backup skills. Modern navigation is done electronically, largely by the use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Like the GPS unit in your car, aircraft GPS units have a database of maps specifically tailored for aviation use. They show airports, landmarks, and obstacles rather than hotels,
