MISSION AND MINISTRY TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES 2018-2019 Dear Colleague, Here is the CMD programme for 2018-2019. I hope that you will find a number of events that interest you. Additional events may be added during the year and we will email you when this happens I encourage you to take a look at what is on offer here and to book up. Attending a training event such as these can give us new perspectives, as well as the opportunity to share our experience with others. Of course it comes at a cost; our work does not go away while we are out of the Mission Community. It is our responsibility to feed ourselves though. Taking time out to do so can give us new energy as well as new skills and perspectives. It is part of the task of ministry. I encourage you to take a look and book some training now. Inevitably some events will be oversubscribed. If the system does not allow you to book, please contact Cathy Scoffield [email protected] to be added to a waiting list. The easiest way to book is to follow the instructions below and book online. You will receive a confirmation that we have received your booking and 7 – 10 days before an event you should receive joining instructions. If that does not happen, please contact Cathy Scoffield. Most events are in Exeter and lunch is normally provided, but do check the joining instructions, as timings may change slightly. There is an opportunity to tell us of any dietary needs when booking. I really hope that you can protect your diary, but it helps so much, if, in the event that you absolutely need to cancel, you let us know in good time, not least because we may well have a waiting list or may have paid for a lunch that is not needed. I look forward to seeing you, Best wishes, Prebendary Philip Sourbut Director of Mission & Ministry HOW TO BOOK YOUR EVENTS Once you have read this brochure and decided which courses you would like to attend, just fill out the form online. Saturday 3rd November 2018 PREACHING THE GOSPEL OF LUKE Led by Steve Walton back by popular request Great Hall, Old Deanery, Exeter EX1 1HS. 10am-4pm Luke’s Gospel invites readers and teachers into deep engagement and reflection about Jesus, and what it means to follow him as disciples This study day will enable you to dig deeper into Luke (the ‘controlling Gospel’ for the lectionary from Advent 2018) in order to preach and teach it more informatively and thoughtfully to your congregations. You will receive help with getting the ‘big picture’ of Luke’s story and storytelling, engaging with some of Luke’s big themes and ideas, and key passages, reflecting on preaching on Luke 5:1-11 (the Gospel for Epiphany 5 = 10 Feb 2019), and learning about helpful resources for studying Luke. Those attending are asked to come with a rough outline of key points for a sermon for a congregation they know on Luke 5:1-11 to share and discuss with others in a small group. Steve Walton is an Anglican priest who is Associate Research Fellow and Professor of New Testament at Trinity College, Bristol. He combines a love for engaging in depth with Scripture with a passion to communicate the message of Scripture well himself, and to help others communicate that message well in the church and the world today. He has served in parish ministry, among university students, in vocational advising, and in theological education. He has written widely on the New Testament, including a key textbook Exploring the New Testament, vol 1: The Gospels and Acts (2nd edn; London: SPCK, 2011) co-authored with David Wenham.
