MISSION AND MINISTRY TRAINING PPORTUNITIES O 2017-2018 Dear Colleague, I am delighted to send you the CMD programme for 2017-2018. We have tried to respond to needs identified in MDR summaries. There are a wide variety of events on offer. Towards the end of the brochure there are also some events organised by other organisations that may be of interest to you. There will be one or two more events arranged as the year progresses and we will email you about these in due course. However, I encourage you to take a look at what is on offer here and book up. Attending a training event such as these can give us new perspectives, as well as the opportunity to share our experience with others. Of course it comes at a cost; our work does not go away while we are out of the Mission Community. It is our responsibility to feed ourselves though. Taking time out to do so can give us new energy as well as new skills and perspectives. It is part of the task of ministry. I encourage you to take a look and book some training now. Inevitably some events will be oversubscribed. If the system does not allow you to book, please contact Cathy Scoffield [email protected] to be added to a waiting list. The easiest way to book is to follow the instructions below and book online. You will receive a confirmation that we have received your booking and 7 – 10 days before an event you should receive joining instructions. Most events are in Exeter and lunch is normally provided, but do check the joining instructions, as timings may change slightly. I really hope that you can protect your diary, but it helps so much, if, in the event that you absolutely need to cancel, you let us know in good time, not least because we may well have a waiting list. I look forward to seeing you, Best wishes, Prebendary Philip Sourbut Director of Mission & Ministry HOW TO BOOK YOUR EVENTS: Once you have read this brochure and decided which courses you would like to attend, just book online. Go to http://exeter.anglican.org /continuing-ministerial-development-clergy/ and fill out the form. If you have any problems or queries please contact the Mission and Ministry team at [email protected] or Tel: 01392 294973 (Cathy). He is a gifted preacher whose enviable fluency with words is contagious. Rowan Williams has commented 'Some writers have the gift of simply letting you know you can trust them. Mark Oakley has this gift in abundance.” Induction Day for those new to the Diocese of Exeter – Catherine Allen (Director of Human Resources) and Philip Sourbut (Director of Mission and Ministry). The objective of this workshop is to improve participants’ resilience in role, which in turn improves their health and wellbeing. All participants leave with individually-tailored action plans to take away, with a 21-day challenge to embed learning. Previous resilience programmes in other work fields have achieved: 20% increase in worker enthusiasm, motivation and purpose 15% reduction in risk of stress-related ill health significantly improved levels of sleep quality and need for recovery significantly reduced levels of chronic fatigue Workshop outline - Participants will be equipped with the skills and techniques to manage stress and pressure more effectively, including: How the human mind functions under pressure ‘Good’ versus ‘bad’ stress What resilience is, and what it isn’t A four-point plan to develop resilience under pressure The session trainer won’t presume to tell delegates how to operate in their roles, but will provide participants with easy-to-learn tools. These will help them to share their gifts and use their skills to their best ability – even under pressure. The place of vulnerability in leadership - Charles Burgess (CPAS) Thursday 30th November 2017 – 10am – 4pm Great Hall, Old Deanery, Exeter EX1 1HS There are two ends to the vulnerability ‘spectrum’; the leader who never reveals anything of their inner struggles; the leader who constantly reveals too much. Both ends are unhelpful. This day explores what vulnerability is and how to be vulnerable in a public role. Managing your time and managing your paperwork - John Truscott Wednesday 17th January 2018 – 10am – 4pm Great Hall, Old Deanery, Exeter EX1 1HS Many of us struggle to use our time well. Some of us struggle to stay on top of our paperwork, to do list or emails. This day will give simple and helpful strategies for tackling these issues so that we are not managed by the chaos. John Truscott is a church consultant and trainer who champions the ministry of 'creative organisation'. He supports and encourages the work of leaders, managers, trustee, planners, communicators and administrator. He writes “I long to see Christians get their act together so that their life in Jesus Christ and their work for him can prosper”. He offers a range of valuable resources on his website https://www.john-truscott.co.uk/ SSMs & Readers Evening Workshop – John Lees Working Connections – helping to allow church and the working world to make sense of each other Tuesday 23rd January 2018 – 6-9pm including a light supper Great Hall, Old Deanery, Exeter EX1 1HS This evening workshop will be led by John Lees, Bishop’s Officer for Self Supporting Ministry. How do we make sense of the world of work to ourselves and those we minister to? What connections and insights can enlarge our ministries? And how do we make the Christian perspective relevant and accessible to workplace colleagues? An evening for Licensed Ministers (especially SSMs) engaged for at least some of the week in workplace ministry Licensed Ministers interested in workplace ministry Chaplains Other clergy who want to explore deeper connections between church and work The evening will give you an opportunity to:- Understand some of the different ways work is being experienced and impacting on people’s lives explore workplace ministry and valuing the part it plays in what we do reflect on some of the ways a theology of work can assist our thinking share experiences and learn new working strategies meet other SSMs from various parts of the Diocese Pastoral Care and the Wisdom Literature - Patrick Whitworth th Thursday 8 February 2018 – 10am – 4pm Great Hall, Old Deanery, Exeter EX1 1HS This day will demonstrate how the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament is a profound manual on issues of Pastoral Care. The five books of Wisdom: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs form a Pentateuch of Wisdom. Between them they deal with issues relating to suffering, prayer, living in community, depression and love. It is not that they provide off the shelf answers to common issues of pastoral care, but shape the pastor herself to be the channel of God's wisdom to others in times or crisis, searching and dis-orientation. Patrick Whitworth, now a retired Anglican Priest with 40 years’ service in a variety of parishes writes and teaches extensively. He has written The Way of Wisdom (available via Amazon) 2013, and most recently is completing a Trilogy on the Early Church Fathers. He is known for a relaxed yet insightful style and has taken many CMD days in several Dioceses.
