MISSION AND MINISTRY TRAINING

PPORTUNITIES O 2017-2018

Dear Colleague,

I am delighted to send you the CMD programme for 2017-2018. We have tried to respond to needs identified in MDR summaries. There are a wide variety of events on offer. Towards the end of the brochure there are also some events organised by other organisations that may be of interest to you.

There will be one or two more events arranged as the year progresses and we will email you about these in due course. However, I encourage you to take a look at what is on offer here and book up. Attending a training event such as these can give us new perspectives, as well as the opportunity to share our experience with others. Of course it comes at a cost; our work does not go away while we are out of the Mission Community. It is our responsibility to feed ourselves though. Taking time out to do so can give us new energy as well as new skills and perspectives. It is part of the task of ministry.

I encourage you to take a look and book some training now. Inevitably some events will be oversubscribed. If the system does not allow you to book, please contact Cathy Scoffield [email protected] to be added to a waiting list.

The easiest way to book is to follow the instructions below and book online. You will receive a confirmation that we have received your booking and 7 – 10 days before an event you should receive joining instructions. Most events are in Exeter and lunch is normally provided, but do check the joining instructions, as timings may change slightly.

I really hope that you can protect your diary, but it helps so much, if, in the event that you absolutely need to cancel, you let us know in good time, not least because we may well have a waiting list.

I look forward to seeing you, Best wishes,

Prebendary Philip Sourbut

Director of Mission & Ministry

HOW TO BOOK YOUR EVENTS: Once you have read this brochure and decided which courses you would like to attend, just book online. If you have any problems or queries please contact the Mission and Ministry team at [email protected] or Tel: 01392 294973 (Cathy).

More recently The Splash of Words (2016) has helped many to help to rediscover poetry's power to startle, challenge and reframe. The place of vulnerability in leadership - Charles Burgess (CPAS) Thursday 30th November 2017 – 10am – 4pm

Great Hall, Old Deanery, Exeter EX1 1HS

There are two ends to the vulnerability ‘spectrum’; the leader who never reveals anything of their inner struggles; the leader who constantly reveals too much. Both ends are unhelpful. This day explores what vulnerability is and how to be vulnerable in a public role.

Managing your time and managing your paperwork - John Truscott

Pastoral Care and the Wisdom Literature - Patrick Whitworth

th Thursday 8 February 2018 – 10am – 4pm Great Hall, Old Deanery, Exeter EX1 1HS

This day will demonstrate how the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament is a profound manual on issues of Pastoral Care. The five books of Wisdom: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs form a Pentateuch of Wisdom. Between them they deal with issues relating to suffering, prayer, living in community, depression and love.

It is not that they provide off the shelf answers to common issues of pastoral care, but shape the pastor herself to be the channel of God's wisdom to others in times or crisis, searching and dis-orientation.

Patrick Whitworth, now a retired Anglican Priest with 40 years’ service in a variety of parishes writes and teaches extensively. He has written The Way of Wisdom (available via Amazon) 2013, and most recently is completing a Trilogy on the Early Church Fathers. He is known for a relaxed yet insightful style and has taken many CMD days in several Dioceses.

The Book of Acts - Steve Walton Mission, Evangelism and Discipleship, Ministry in the Spirituality and worship Two dates to choose from Friday 23rd or Saturday 24th February 2018, 10am - 4pm Great Hall, Old Deanery, Exeter EX1 1HS

Acts is an exciting book, telling the story of the beginnings of the church over its first thirty to forty years. It’s in the form of ‘edited highlights’, picking out key events, key people, and key themes in the establishment and growth of the church.

The story itself is strongly driven by God himself: time after time, human planning and organization and strategy has only a small - if any - contribution to the forward movement of the believing communities.

So how can we engage with this amazing book today? Is Acts describing things which simply don’t happen anymore? Or is Acts prescribing how the church is meant to be at all times and in all places? Or is there a middle ground between the two? What’s the role of this book as Christian Scripture for today’s Christian communities?

Steve Walton is an Anglican priest who is Professor in New Testament at St Mary’s University, Twickenham. He combines a love for engaging in depth with Scripture with a passion to communicate the message of Scripture well himself, and to help others communicate that message well in the church and the world today.

Steve has served in parish ministry, among university students, in vocational advising, and in theological education.

He has written widely on the New Testament, including a key textbook Exploring the New Testament, volume 1: The Gospels and Acts (2nd edn; London: SPCK, 2011) co-authored with David Wenham. His major current writing project is the Word Biblical Commentary on Acts, building on his PhD work, published as Leadership and Lifestyle: The Portrait of Paul in the Miletus Speech and 1 Thessalonians (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2000).

“An Unexpected Love: Preaching from the David - Jonathan Narrative” - Jonathan Rowe

Thursday 8th March 2018, 10am – 4pm Great Hall, Old Deanery, Exeter EX1 1HS.

The books of Samuel contain some of the most exciting and emotive stories in the Bible. But how can they speak to the Church today?

We will look at the nature of biblical narrative, examine the story of David and Jonathan’s love, and reflect upon what their friendship might mean for the Church. Come prepared to think about the text from new angles and to enjoy a fresh reading of a familiar tale.

Jonathan Rowe is Director of Ministry for the . His publications include Sons or Lovers: An Interpretation of David and Jonathan's Friendship (LHBOTS 575; London: Bloomsbury T&T Clark, 2012) and the edited volume (with Andy Draycott) Living Witness: Explorations in Missional Ethics (Nottingham: Apollos, 2012). Jonathan is now Director of Development and Tutor for the South West Ministry Training Course and Honorary Research Fellow in the University of Exeter.

Spiritual Direction as Sacred Space – Helen Bays

Thursday 15th March 2018. 11am – 3pm, Great Hall, Old Deanery, Exeter EX1 1HS. This day is an opportunity to explore the nature of spiritual accompaniment and ways in which to reap its full blessings. Spiritual Direction in ordained ministry is immensely valuable. The committed relationship of mutual trust and respect provides a safe space in which to focus on one’s own relationship with God, when most of the time, the needs of others take priority. Rev Helen Bays is the Coordinator of Spiritual Direction Referral Service and co-facilitator of Exploring Christian Spirituality in the Diocese of Exeter.

Dealing with Difficult Behaviour – Bridgebuilders with Liz Griffin

th Thursday 7 June – 9.30 am – 4.30 pm. Great Hall, Old Deanery, Exeter EX1 1HS (note the longer day: you should plan to be present for the whole day please).

We expect this day to be oversubscribed. Please book early - and let us know at the earliest possible stage, if you can no longer attend.

A practical challenge Church leaders sometimes ask in despair what they can do about people who seem quite unreasonable, people who wear you down with persistent negative behaviour, and leave you feeling blocked at every turn, or even under siege. In such circumstances, it is easy to get sucked into a spiral of blame and recrimination. The most important contribution you can make as a leader is to model a response that is both firm and compassionate.

This presents challenges, both spiritual and practical. You may need to be honest about how your own attitude contributes to the problem. You may need to learn more effective ways of naming patterns of behaviour that are damaging fellowship between fellow members of the body of Christ. And you may need to attend more to the health of the whole body, and focus less on individuals who are viewed as troublesome.

This workshop will equip you with insights and skills for dealing with difficult behaviour. With practically- focused training, it is designed for people who are part of a church’s leadership group (e.g. a staff team, ministry team, eldership, diaconate, church council), especially those with pastoral responsibility. A key part of the day is that you will work with a case-study from your own experience. The aim is to give you confidence and hope.

Programme - Running from 9.30 to 4.30, the programme includes worship, presentations, case-studies, and hands-on skills training.  Review your own approach: “difficult people” or “difficult relationships”?  Practise looking below the surface of presenting behaviour  Plan how to be appropriately assertive, speaking the truth in love  Learn how to attend to the health of the body of Christ as a whole, rather than focus too much on “problem members”

Trainer - Liz Griffiths is Director of Training for Bridge Builders and an Anglican Priest. She has a broad experience of both parish ministry and adult education, has worked in city centre and urban estate parishes, and as Vice-Principal of the Eastern Region Ministry Course, helping to train ordained and lay ministers.

‘The One Thing Needful’: Prayer, Prophec y and the Renewal of the Church – Donna Lazenby

Monday 18th June 2018. 10am – 4pm, Great Hall, Old Deanery, Exeter EX1 1HS. At a time when we yearn for the re-evangelisation of our nation, what will both nourish and resource the Church and her ministers? During this day we will experience the rich relationship of prayer and prophecy, seeing how the contemplative resourcing of the imagination leads to a prophetic witness that has power to share God's kingdom anew.

Revd Dr Donna Lazenby is Director of St Mellitus College, South West and Tutor and Lecturer in Spirituality and Apologetics at St Mellitus College. She completed the BA in Philosophy and Theology, MPhil in Philosophy of Religion and PhD in Theology at Cambridge University’s Divinity Faculty.
