A bibliographic analysis of these papers, the number of species reported in the checklists, and a list of new species are presented in this paper. Key words: Acanthocephala, new species, checklist, bibliography The Phylum Acanthocephala is a relatively small group of endoparasitic helminths (helminths = worm-like animals that are parasites; not a monophyletic group). Adults use vertebrates as definitive hosts (fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals), eggs are passed in the feces and infect arthropods (insects and crustacean) as intermediate hosts, where the cystacanth develops, and the cystacanth infects the definitive host when it is ingested. In some cases, fishes, reptiles, and amphibians that eat arthropods serve as paratenic (transport) hosts to bridge ecological barriers to adults of a species that typically does not feed on arthropods. -

Neoechillorhynchus pimelodi sp.n. is described as the first record of Acanthocephala in Pimelodlls macula/lIs Lacépéde, 1803, collected in the São Fran cisco ri ver, Três Marias, Minas Gerais. The new spec ies is distinguished from other of the genus by lhe lhree circles of hooks of different sizes, and by lhe eggs measurements. The hooks measuring 100- 112 (105), 32-40 (36) and 20-27 (23) in length in lhe males and 102-1 42 (129), 34-55 (47) and 27-35 (29) in lenglh in lhe fema les for the anterior, middle and posterior circles. The eggs measuring 15-22 (18) in length and 12- 15 ( 14) in width, with concentric layers oftexture smooth, enveloping lhe acanthor. KEY WORDS. First Record of Acanthocephala in Marine Copepods

Scott, 1896) (Copepoda: Ectinosomatidae) collected off La Rochelle, France. This represents the first record of Acanthocephala infesting marine copepods. On the basis of the hook formula on the proboscis and the spine pattern on the trunk, the para sites were identified as juveniles of Acanthogyrus (Acanthosentis) lizae Orecchia, Paggi & RadujkoY ic, 1988 (Eoacanthocephala: Gyracanthocephala: Quadrigyridae) which utilizes the golden grey mullet Liza aurata (Risso, 1810) as the definitive host. The literature on acanthocephalans utiliz ing copepods as intermediate hosts is reviewed and some morphological details of both the cysta canth and host copepod are presented using differential interference contrast and scanning elec tron microscopy. Halectinosoma porosum Wells, 1967 from Inhaca Island (Mozambique) is formally transferred to Ectinosoma Boeck, 1865 as E. porosum (Wells, 1967) comb. nov. INTRODUCTION The Acanthocephala is a small but important phylum of endoparasitic hel minths. They live as adults in the alimentary tract of both poikilothermic and homeothermic vertebrates and require an arthropod as first intermediate host. The latter is either a crustacean in aquatic species or an insect or isopod (or rarely a myriapod; e.g. Crites 1964, Fahnestock 1985) in terrestrial species. Although relatively few life cycles have been elucidated, they seem to take a similar course in all acanthocephalans studied. -

ABSTRACT Neoechinorhynchus cribbi sp.n. (Neoechinorhynchidae) is described from the marine fish Liza subviridis (Valenciennes, 1836) from Karachi coast, Pakistan. The new species is distinguished from all other species of the genus Neoechinorhynchus by a combination of characters and the most significant being overlapping of the testes. It is specifically separated from all the other species of the genus Neoechinorhynchus by a combination of characters including body size, proboscis size, lengths of proboscis hooks, length of lemnisci, egg size and size of bursa. This is the tenth species of genus Neoechinorhynchus being reported from Pakistan. Keywords: Neoechinorhynchus cribbi n. sp., fish, small intestine, Karachi coast, Pakistan. INTRODUCTION The genus Neoechinorhynchus erected by Stiles and Hassall, 1905 to accommodate acanthocephalans from freshwater, marine fish and turtles. Yamaguti 1963 listed forty species of the genus from different hosts. Later, during 2002, Amin revised the genus, out of 109 species he considered 88 were validated and assigned in one or two subgenera; Neoechinorhynchus having eggs without polar prolongation and Hebesoma with polar prolongation; ovoid or elliptical eggs. Reviewing the literature on all the acanthocephalans parasitizing freshwater and marine fishes of Basrah province, Iraq indicated the presence of 14 acanthocephalan taxa. Seven taxa belong to the class Eoacanthocephala and seven to the class Palaeacanthocephala. All these acanthocephalans, except Serrasentis spp. are adults living in the intestine of their fish hosts. Five species of such acanthocephalans were recorded from freshwater localities, seven from marine localities and two taxa from both freshwater and marine localities. The total number of acanthocephalan species recorded for each fish host species fluctuated from a minimum of one acanthocephalan species in 18 fish hosts to a maximum of six acanthocephalan species in Liza abu only. Number of fish hosts reported for these acanthocephalans fluctuated from one host in case of seven species to a maximum of 21 hosts in case of Neoechinorhynchus iraqensis.
