Du Preez1,2*, Mathieu Badets1, Laurent Héritier1,3,4 and Olivier Verneau1,3,4 Abstract Background: Polystomatid flatworms in chelonians are divided into three genera, i.e. Polystomoides Ward, 1917, Polystomoidella Price, 1939 and Neopolystoma Price, 1939, according to the number of haptoral hooks. Among the about 55 polystome species that are known to date from the 327 modern living chelonians, only four species of Polystomoides are currently recognised within the 45 South American freshwater turtles. Methods: During 2012, several sites in the vicinity of the cities Cayenne and Kaw in French Guiana were investigated for freshwater turtles. Turtles were collected at six sites and the presence of polystomatid flatworms was assessed from the presence of polystome eggs released by infected specimens. Results: Among the three turtle species that were collected, no polystomes were found in the gibba turtle Mesoclemmys gibba (Schweigger, 1812). The spot-legged turtle Rhinoclemmys punctularia (Daudin, 1801) was infected with two species of Neopolystoma Price, 1939, one in the conjunctival sacs and the other in the urinary bladder, while the scorpion mud turtle Kinosternon scorpioides (Linnaeus, 1766) was found to be infected with a single Neopolystoma species in the conjunctival sacs. These parasites could be distinguished from known species of Neopolystoma by a combination of morphological characteristics including body size, number and length of genital spines, shape and size of the testis. -

Key words: Acanthocephala, new species, checklist, bibliography The Phylum Acanthocephala is a relatively small group of endoparasitic helminths (helminths = worm-like animals that are parasites; not a monophyletic group). Adults use vertebrates as definitive hosts (fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals), eggs are passed in the feces and infect arthropods (insects and crustacean) as intermediate hosts, where the cystacanth develops, and the cystacanth infects the definitive host when it is ingested. In some cases, fishes, reptiles, and amphibians that eat arthropods serve as paratenic (transport) hosts to bridge ecological barriers to adults of a species that typically does not feed on arthropods. -

The parasitic fatma of the alimentary tract of adult whi tespotted rabbitfish, Siganus sutor, sampled in December 1990 at the Kenyan coast, was in vestigated. Fi ve endoparasites were fo und: the di genean trematodes Opisthogonoporoides hanwnanthai, Gyliauchen papillatus and 1-/exan.gium sigani, the acanthocephalan Sclerocollum rubrimaris and th e nematode Procamm.alanus elatensis. No uninfected fish, nor single species infections occurred. Parasite population data showed ve1y hi gh prevalences for ali endoparasites, ranging from 68. 18 % to 100 %. G. papi/lat us occurred with the hi ghest mean intensity, 201.68 ± 12 .54 parasites per infected fi sb. The parasites were over di spersed within their host's population and frequency distributions generall y fitted the n egative binomial function. The relationship between host size and parasite burden showed that smaller fish were more heavil y infected. The infection with O. hanumanthai and H. sigani decreased significant ly with total length of S. su tor. Study of th e associations between parasites showed that the iutensi ties of the three digenean species were significantly positi ve!y correlated. A total of 15 sites were surveyed from November 2014 to June 2017. A total of 210 individuals representing 3 fish species (Rusty blenny-Parablennius sanguinolentus, Freshwater blenny-Salaria fluviatilis and Peacock blenny-Salaria pavo) were sampled from five (Beşgöz Creek Estuary, Manavgat River Es- tuary, Karpuzçay Creek Estuary, Köyceğiz Lagoon Lake and Beymelek Lagoon Lake) of the locali- ties investigated. The high juvenile densities of S. fluviatilis in Karpuzçay Creek Estuary and P. sanguinolentus in Beşgöz Creek Estuary were observed. Various threat factors were observed in five different native habitats of Blenny species. A Preliminary Study on the Reproduction of the Rabbitfish (Siganus Rivulatus (Forsskal, 1775)) in the Northeastern Mediterranean

Box 173, Tr 01330 Balcalı, Adana-TURKEY Received: 23.03.1999 Abstract: This study was carried out to identify some aspects of the reproductive cycle of the rabbitfish (Siganus rivulatus) inhabiting the northeastern Mediterranean. For this reason, monthly sampling was conducted between February 1995 and June 1996, and a total of 473 specimens were used. By using the monthly changes in the values of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and Condition Factor (K), it was found that their reproduction takes place during July and August. The mean diameter of ripe gonadal eggs was 0.44 mm; and mean fecundity and its standard deviation was found to be 434761±181006. The new spec ies is distinguished from other of the genus by lhe lhree circles of hooks of different sizes, and by lhe eggs measurements. 2014 ASP Annual Report
Introduction I AM DELIGHTED TO PRESENT TO YOU THE 2014 ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY FOR PARASITOLOGY INC., WHICH HAS BEEN PREPARED BY OUR ASP NETWORK TEAM, LISA JONES, IAN HARRIS AND NICK SMITH. Parasitology research in Australia continues to flourish, with over 490 research papers published in 2014 and various, well-deserved honours bestowed on ASP Members, including the induction of three new Fellows of the ASP: Geoff McFadden; Tom Cribb; and Rob Adlard. However, funding for our research reached a low point for the last decade, with only 37 research grants or fellowships (worth $17 million) awarded to ASP members, versus 10-year averages of 60 grants (range: 37-87) and $34 million (range, $17-54 million). This reduced funding is being experienced across diverse disciplines and is, by no means, a reflection of any ASP President, Robin Gasser decline in quality or intensity of parasitological research in this country. Unfortunately, though, at this point there is no sign of a reversal of this disturbing trend in research funding patterns in Ryan O’Handley (SA Reps), Colin Stack (NSW rep.), Melanie Leef Australia, which seems to buck many international trends. Thus, (Tasmania rep.), Jutta Marfurt and Benedikt Ley (NT reps), Abdul international linkages forged by schemes like our own Researcher Jabbar (Victorian rep.), Mark Pearson (QLD rep.), Alan Lymbery Exchange, Training and Travel Awards, will become increasingly and Stephanie Godfrey (WA reps), Chris Peatey and Tina Skinner- important and critical. Fish were collected at a pond located on Palmeiras Farm (21o59’19"S, 47o12’04"W), municipal district of Aguaí, São Paulo, Brazil, during the period of January, 2002 to May, 2003. Among the 64 specimens analyzed, 56 (prevalence=87.5%) were infected with three to 573 specimens of Quadrigyrus machadoi (mean intensity=119.0±120.6 and mean abundance=104.1±119.4). Most of the parasites were found in the mesenterium as cystacanths. Some fish contained adult female parasites in the intestine, but gravid females were not verified. Parasite indices were analyzed in relation to the biological parameters of sex and standard length of the trahira, as well as with regard to the dry and the rainy periods defined for the area. -

Treatment strategies have been the focus of several in vivo studies; however, few studies have been undertaken on in vitro protocols for parasite maintenance. The aim of the present study was to develop the best in vitro culture condition for N. buttnerae to ensure its survival and adaptation out of the host to allow for the testing of substances to be used to control the parasite. To achieve this, parasites were collected from naturally infected fish and distributed in 6-well culture plates under the following treatments in triplicate: 0.9% NaCl, sterile tank water, L-15 Leibovitz culture medium, L-15 Leibovitz + agar 2% culture medium, RPMI 1640 culture medium, and RPMI 1640 + agar 2% culture medium. -
