Neoechillorhynchus pimelodi sp.n. is described as the first record of Acanthocephala in Pimelodlls macula/lIs Lacépéde, 1803, collected in the São Fran cisco ri ver, Três Marias, Minas Gerais. The new spec ies is distinguished from other of the genus by lhe lhree circles of hooks of different sizes, and by lhe eggs measurements. The hooks measuring 100- 112 (105), 32-40 (36) and 20-27 (23) in length in lhe males and 102-1 42 (129), 34-55 (47) and 27-35 (29) in lenglh in lhe fema les for the anterior, middle and posterior circles. The eggs measuring 15-22 (18) in length and 12- 15 ( 14) in width, with concentric layers oftexture smooth, enveloping lhe acanthor. KEY WORDS. Introduction I AM DELIGHTED TO PRESENT TO YOU THE 2014 ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY FOR PARASITOLOGY INC., WHICH HAS BEEN PREPARED BY OUR ASP NETWORK TEAM, LISA JONES, IAN HARRIS AND NICK SMITH. Parasitology research in Australia continues to flourish, with over 490 research papers published in 2014 and various, well-deserved honours bestowed on ASP Members, including the induction of three new Fellows of the ASP: Geoff McFadden; Tom Cribb; and Rob Adlard. However, funding for our research reached a low point for the last decade, with only 37 research grants or fellowships (worth $17 million) awarded to ASP members, versus 10-year averages of 60 grants (range: 37-87) and $34 million (range, $17-54 million). This reduced funding is being experienced across diverse disciplines and is, by no means, a reflection of any ASP President, Robin Gasser decline in quality or intensity of parasitological research in this country. Unfortunately, though, at this point there is no sign of a reversal of this disturbing trend in research funding patterns in Ryan O’Handley (SA Reps), Colin Stack (NSW rep.), Melanie Leef Australia, which seems to buck many international trends. Thus, (Tasmania rep.), Jutta Marfurt and Benedikt Ley (NT reps), Abdul international linkages forged by schemes like our own Researcher Jabbar (Victorian rep.), Mark Pearson (QLD rep.), Alan Lymbery Exchange, Training and Travel Awards, will become increasingly and Stephanie Godfrey (WA reps), Chris Peatey and Tina Skinner- important and critical. Treatment strategies have been the focus of several in vivo studies; however, few studies have been undertaken on in vitro protocols for parasite maintenance. The aim of the present study was to develop the best in vitro culture condition for N. buttnerae to ensure its survival and adaptation out of the host to allow for the testing of substances to be used to control the parasite. To achieve this, parasites were collected from naturally infected fish and distributed in 6-well culture plates under the following treatments in triplicate: 0.9% NaCl, sterile tank water, L-15 Leibovitz culture medium, L-15 Leibovitz + agar 2% culture medium, RPMI 1640 culture medium, and RPMI 1640 + agar 2% culture medium. -

Two acanthocephalan species (Neoechinorhynchus agilis in Liza aurata; Acanthocephaloides irregularis in Scorpaena porcus) and 4 nematode species (Hysterothylacium aduncum in Merlangius merlangus euxinus, Trachurus mediterraneus, Engraulis encrasicholus, Belone belone, Caspialosa sp., Sciaena umbra, Scorpaena porcus, Liza aurata, Spicara smaris, Gobius niger, Sarda sarda, Uranoscopus scaber, and Mullus barbatus; Anisakis pegreffii in Trachurus mediterraneus; Philometra globiceps in Uranoscopus scaber and Trachurus mediterraneus; and Ascarophis sp. in Scorpaena porcus) were found in the intestines of their hosts. Mesoclemmys gibba, commonly known as the gibba turtle, was previously known as Phrynops gibbus (McCord et al., 2001). The upper region of the shell is known as the carapace which varies in colour from black to chestnut brown or dark grey (Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, 2010). The carapace does not have a pattern. The length of an adult Mesoclymmys gibba measures from 23-30cm. The carapace length in males however does not exceed 17cm (Murphy, 2014) and the size of hatchlings range from 43 to 48mm (Mittermeier et al., 1978). The ellipsoidal carapace can be slightly bowed with a shallow supracaudal notch (above the tail). Small posterior projections or low keels may be present on the 3rd to 5th broad vertebrals. Therefore the surface can either be slightly roughened, due to the uneven medial keel, or smooth (Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens, 2010). “Neural bones vary from none to five, but, if present, they are rudimentary and never contact the nuchal” (Pritchard and Trebbau, 1984). The bottom region of the shell is known as the plastron which varies in colour from yellow to red brown. It is wide and long, well-developed, somewhat inverted anteriorly with a deep anal notch posteriorly. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This study is a compilation of current knowledge of the taxonomic composition and distribution of the helminth parasites of freshwater fish in Central America. A list of 111 adult helminth species up to day reported from 17 freshwater fish families from Central America was compiled. The data show a helminth parasite fauna in freshwater fish that is typical to the region. One hundred and two of the known helminth species are endemic to the area, 32 of which can be derived from South American genera. Nematodes were the most abundant group, followed by monogeneans and trematodes. None of the 29 helminth families recorded to date is exclusive to Central America, while 16 of the 65 recorded genera have been only recorded from this area. Twenty three of these genera are South American lineages. The data suggest that helminth parasites of freshwater fish from Central America constitute a recent fauna derived mainly from South America but not found there. The new species is distinguished from all other species of the genus Neoechinorhynchus by a combination of characters and the most significant being overlapping of the testes. It is specifically separated from all the other species of the genus Neoechinorhynchus by a combination of characters including body size, proboscis size, lengths of proboscis hooks, length of lemnisci, egg size and size of bursa. INTRODUCTION The genus Neoechinorhynchus erected by Stiles and Hassall, 1905 to accommodate acanthocephalans from freshwater, marine fish and turtles. Yamaguti 1963 listed forty species of the genus from different hosts. Later, during 2002, Amin revised the genus, out of 109 species he considered 88 were validated and assigned in one or two subgenera; Neoechinorhynchus having eggs without polar prolongation and Hebesoma with polar prolongation; ovoid or elliptical eggs. It occurs in the Amazonas, Tocantins, Paraguay, Parana, and Uruguay River basins, where it inhabits shallow streams, ponds, and marshes. Its taxonomic status has long been uncertain and confusion with similar looking species of toad-headed turtles still occurs frequently, leading to erroneous distribution records.
