Ten years ago, when SST Records spun at the creative center of rock music, founder Greg Ginn was living with six other people in a one-room rehearsal studio. SST music was whipping like a sonic cyclone through every college campus in the country. SST bands criss-crossed the nation, luring young people away from arenas and corporate rock like no other force since the dawn of punk. But Greg Ginn had no shower and no car. He lived on a few thousand dollars a year, and relied on public transportation. "The reality is not only different, it's extremely, shockingly different than what people imagine," Ginn said. "We basically had one place where we rehearsed and lived and worked." SST, based in the Los Angeles suburb of Los Alamitos, is the quintessential in- dependent record label. For 17 years it has existed squarely outside the corporate rock industry, releasing music and spoken-word performances by artists who are not much interested in making money. When an SST band grows restless for earnings or for broader success, it simply leaves the label. Founded in 1978 in Hermosa Beach, Calif., SST Records has arguably produced more great rock bands than any other label of its era. Black Flag, fast, loud and socially aware, was probably the world's first hardcore punk band. Sonic Youth, a blend of white noise and pop, is a contender for best alternative-rock band ever. -

It cannot be reduced to the record sales or scandals, like other famous people. They don’t have the typical self-destructive streak of the stars of the show business, which is the basis of the fortune and, at the same time, the defeat of other musicians. They don’t even have the cult of personality, which has destabilized other crews of the time. However Sonic Youth, during their three decades of career, have been able to find a space in the music scene, to involve a broad segment of audience and lovers; becoming a kind of model for younger generations of musicians. Furthermore, the members of Sonic Youthcan be considered such as influencers ahead of his time, thanks to their ability to find new talents. The present study aims to analyze the concept of celebrity applied to the Sonic Youth language, from 1981 (starting year) to 1994, the year of Experimental Jet Set, Trash No Star album, which brings the group to that DIY (Do-It-Yourself) punk ethics that denotes them from the beginning; to plot the New York’s environment in which they fit; and how the entry into the mainstream world changes the aesthetics of the group. In other words, the research is a breakthrough of the band’s long career, marking the highlights that made them the Sonic Youth. -

Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least. -

Tyler Cowen's Thoughts on Music Web Page. I will break this down by category. Classical In classical music, the immediate canon is Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Mozart. With Bach and Beethoven it is hard to go wrong. But my short list there would be Bach's B Minor Mass and St. Matthew's Passion, The Art of the Fugue, Well- Tempered Klavier, some of the organ music, the Brandenburgs, the Partitas, the Goldberg Variations, and the solo violin works. For Beethoven it would be the late piano sonatas, the late string quartets, and the symphonies. For Brahms I like best the chamber music, such as the sonatas for cello and piano, or for clarinet and piano, some of the piano music, and some of the songs, in addition to the German Requiem and the symphonies. Mozart I like the operas best, definitely. Other composers worth checking out: Palestrina Monteverdi Haydn (the string quartets, piano sonatas, the trios, The Creation, assorted symphonies) Chopin some pieces by Schubert Mahler's 9th Do not be duped into thinking that 20th century and contemporary musics are a wasteland (see my book *In Praise of Commercial Culture*, on this). SONIC YOUTH The band is in nucleus formation: Thurston Moore - guitar, vocals Kim Gordon - bass, guitar, vocals Lee Ranaldo - guitar vocals Steve Shelley - drums Their new CD is called RATHER RIPPED Release date: June 13, 2006 1981/82/83 (Noise Fest, 1st mini-LP, Confusion Is Sex, Kill Yr Idols, Sonic Death): The group began in 1981 downtown New York City with this line-up: Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo and Richard Edson on drums. Ann Demarinis, keyboards, played early on for a very short bit and is documented on the first recorded appearance of the band on the Noise Fest cassette released by ZG Magazine in 1982. The Noise Fest was at a NYC art gallery where Thurston curated 9 days of experimental rock music. After Anne left, Lee joined. This is the band that made the 1st eponymously titled mini-LP released in 1982 by Neutral Records, a label founded by NYC guitar/composer Glen Branca. Richard then ran away to be a movie star. Lee and Thurston awoke in 1976/77 NYC to CBGB/Max’s firestorm: Television, Patti Smith, Suicide, Ramones, etc. - Kim was in L.A. studying as a visual artist living down the block from a young Darby Crash and Germs rehearsals. She came to NYC, met up with Thurston and they started playing during the era (1978/79) dubbed no wave. They joined forces with Lee. With cheap guitars tuned to various hot rodded tunings they wrote songs. Richard Edson left to be replaced by Bob Bert, and for an interim, Jim Sclavunos. -

Etter å ha jobbet med denne oppgaven i drøye ett og et halvt år er det en god følelse å se den nærme seg et ferdig resultat. Prosessen fra de første forsøkene på å utvikle idéene mine og frem til nå har vært lang og slitsom, men fremfor alt svært lærerik. Jeg vil rette en stor takk til professor Stan Hawkins for grundig og oppmuntrende veiledning underveis, samt et vell av faglig inspirasjon og engasjement.
