Tuscan-Style Red Blend Vineyards Winemaking the Wine Accolades

rosso Tuscan-Style Red Blend lot #2 Among the pioneers who introduced Sangiovese to the New World, the Gullett family is renowned for making “California’s Best Sangiovese.” In 1985, they set out with the singular goal of making Vino Noceto California’s premiere Sangiovese producer. From just three producing acres and 110 cases in their inaugural 1990 vintage, they now farm over 25 acres and produce 10,000 cases per year, including ten different Sangioveses, a frizzante Moscato, an old vine Zinfandel, Barbera, and Pinot Grigio. A bold red blend from our cellar, Noceto’s Rosso is bigger, brighter, and more fruit forward than our traditionally elegant, signature Sangiovese. Vineyards Grapes for Rosso Lot#2, that are sourced from our Estate Vineyards, utilize our five distinct Sangiovese clones, along with two separate selections of Aglianico (two rows Estate and the remainder from the Brown Ranch vineyard), Petite Sirah, and Alicante Bouschet. Zinfandel from the Original Grandpère Vineyard (OGP) and Barbera from the Linsteadt Vineyard fufill the other half of this blend. Winemaking 40% Sangiovese, 30% Barbera, 20% Zinfandel, 9% Aglianico, and a touch of Alicante Bouschet and Petite Sirah, blended post-fermentation. The wine is aged 130 gallon French Oak Puncheons to soften youthful tannins and gently age the wine—15 to 20% new oak. the Wine This wine has complex layers of rich dark flavors, including cherry-berry and spice. A subtle, Alcohol 13.9% ABV soft tannin structure is provided from the blending in of Aglianico and Petite Sirah. Pairs well Bottled December 5, 2017 with spicy ragu and hamburgers. Reportedly, quality is excellent. In 2016, Italy’s wine exports remained stable at 2 billion liters, valued at $6.2 billion. The United States ($1.5 billion), Germany ($1.1 billion), and the United Kingdom ($843 million) are key markets. 1 Italian Wine Overview Production According to the latest data from the Italian Enologists Association (Assoenologi), Italy produced 5.1 billion liters of wine in 2016, 1.5 percent more than the previous campaign and 15 percent above the five-year average, despite challenging weather. Wine production decreases in Campania (-20 percent), Lombardia (-15 percent), Sicilia (-7 percent), Toscana (-7 percent), Trentino Alto Adige (-7 percent), Lazio/Umbria (-5 percent), and Friuli Venezia Giulia (-5 percent) were offset by volume increases in Puglia (+12 percent), Abruzzo (+12 percent), Veneto (+7 percent), Emilia Romagna (+3 percent), and Piemonte (+3 percent). Production in Marche and Sardegna remained flat. Reportedly, quality is excellent. Veneto, Puglia, and Emilia Romagna are the main wine-producing regions, accounting for 52 percent of total production.

All in equal amounts - just above 14% of each grape variety. VINEYARDS: The grapes are selected from low-yielding vineyards in the respective areas of production: Corvina from the hear of the Valpolicella Classico region in the province of Verona, Northern Italy; Primitivo from the Salento area, in Puglia, Southern Italy; Barbera from the province of Pavia, in Lombardy, Northern Italy; Nebbiolo from the prized Langhe area of Piedmont, Northern Italy; Montepulciano from the province of Pescara, in the Abruzzo region of Central Italy; Aglianico from the province of Avellino, in the Campania region of Southern Italy; Sangiovese from the province of Florence, in Tuscany, Central Italy. TRAINING: All the grape varieties are trained using the Guyot system, except the Primitivo, which is trained using the typical Alberello Pugliese method. HARVEST: Manual harvest occurs at different times for each grape variety, starting with Primitivo in late August, through to Aglianico in late October. VINIFICATION: With the exception of Corvina vinification is the same for all varieties: after de-stemming, the grapes are not crushed, allowing them to remain intact, reducing damage to the skins and optimizing color extraction. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 23-25°C for 8-10 days. Frequent remontage and delestage are carried out in the early stages of fermentation in order to achieve soft extraction of aromas and gentle tannins. After racking, malolactic bacteria are added to induce a second fermentation. The Corvina grapes follow a different technique called “appassimento”.
