WINE Our namesake, Coda di Volpe, comes from a grape only found in Southern Italy. Pulled from near extinction, it is one that expresses the true landscape & vineyards of Campania. Meaning “Tail of the Fox,” Coda di Volpe has influenced our entire wine program. Some of the most dynamic wines in the world are being made & bottled from the six traditional regions of Southern Italy; Campania, Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria, Sicily & Sardinia. Just as our namesake shows us a glimpse of the past, so do the other ancient varietals we have gathered on our list. By supporting small producers & native species, we strive to represent the vibrancy of Southern Italy’s present & future.     A new Mezzogiorno? Exploring agro-towns and inequality in Southern Italy through a collective agricultural system in Apulia, 1600-1900 “What do people do here? I once asked at a little town between Rome and Naples; and the man with whom I talked, shrugging his shoulders, answered curtly, „c‟è miseria‟, there‟s nothing but poverty… I have seen poverty enough, and squalid conditions of life, but the most ugly and repulsive collection of houses I ever came upon was the town of Squillace”.1 George Gissing’s ‘rambles’ through Southern Italy at the turn of the twentieth century led him to remark extensively on the topography. In particular, he frequently mentioned the miserable living conditions of the people he encountered who tended to live huddled together in large impoverished towns. His account is made all the more interesting by the fact that (a) Southern Italy is today more economically disadvantaged than Northern Italy with some of the poorest social and economic infrastructures in Western Europe,2 and (b) this habitation pattern within large towns has been retained in large parts of modern Southern Italy. While alternative settlement patterns do exist in Southern Italy including small villages and isolated farms, it is undeniable that the distribution of large concentrated towns is prolific.a It is also a settlement structure often seen in other areas of the Mediterranean such as in central and southern parts of the Iberian Peninsula, regions of mainland Greece, and in parts of Northern Africa. These large agglomerated settlements are often referred to as ‘agro-towns’, pointing to their essentially agricultural function.

Die Wanderung im Naturpark verläuft auf alten Bergpfaden und bietet einen wunderbaren Blick über das Tyrrhenische Meer mit zahlreichen kleinen Buchten die zum Schwimmen und Schnorcheln im kristallklaren Wasser einladen. Am Rückweg besuchen Sie Scopello, ein idyllisch gelegenes Fischerdorf, die hier „Baglio“ genannt werden (vom arabischen Wort bahal: Hof). Entstanden im 17. Sicily is an island with a unique identity and rich historical past. A melting pot of different cultures, traditions and architectural styles as well as beautiful landscapes and a coastline, which is home to some of Italy’s most stunning beaches. The most African of the island’s landscapes, the North West saw a cultural melting pot of Phoenicians, Greeks and Arabs settling in Sicily. Their stamp remains. Incontestably some of the island’s most charismatic ancient sites are also to be found in the West, the Greek temple and theater in Segesta, surrounded by rolling meadowland and the Phoenecian site on the island of Mozia, just off Marsala. Selinunte’s Doric columns are special too, as is the Phoenician ruin of Solunto, perched on the slopes of Montecatalfano. But be prepared for contrast. From the vibrant port town of Trapani you can take a boat across to Sicily’s captivating Egadi islands or a cable car which whisks you up into the medieval walled town of Erice where you can almost feel that you have been transported to Tuscany.

Reportedly, quality is excellent. In 2016, Italy’s wine exports remained stable at 2 billion liters, valued at $6.2 billion. The United States ($1.5 billion), Germany ($1.1 billion), and the United Kingdom ($843 million) are key markets. 1 Italian Wine Overview Production According to the latest data from the Italian Enologists Association (Assoenologi), Italy produced 5.1 billion liters of wine in 2016, 1.5 percent more than the previous campaign and 15 percent above the five-year average, despite challenging weather. Wine production decreases in Campania (-20 percent), Lombardia (-15 percent), Sicilia (-7 percent), Toscana (-7 percent), Trentino Alto Adige (-7 percent), Lazio/Umbria (-5 percent), and Friuli Venezia Giulia (-5 percent) were offset by volume increases in Puglia (+12 percent), Abruzzo (+12 percent), Veneto (+7 percent), Emilia Romagna (+3 percent), and Piemonte (+3 percent). Production in Marche and Sardegna remained flat. Reportedly, quality is excellent. Veneto, Puglia, and Emilia Romagna are the main wine-producing regions, accounting for 52 percent of total production.
