Darnton The French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu once remarked that Robert Damton’s principal shortcoming as a scholar is that he “writes too well.” This prodigious talent, which arouses such suspicion of aristocratic pretension among social scientists in republican France, has made him nothing less than an academic folk hero in America—one who is read with equal enthusiasm and pleasure by scholars and the public at large. Darnton’ s work improbably blends a strong dose of Cartesian rationalism with healthy portions of Dickensian grit and sentiment. The result is a uniquely American synthesis of the finest traits of our British and French ancestors—a vision of the past that is at once intellectually bracing and captivatingly intimate. fascination with the making of modem Western democracies came easily to this true blue Yankee. Born in New York City on the eve of the Second World War, the son of two reporters at the New York Times, Robert Damton has always had an immediate grasp of what it means to be caught up in the fray of modem world historical events. The connection between global historical forces and the tangible lives of individuals was driven home at a early age by his father’s death in the Pacific theater during the war. Irreparable loss left him with a deep commitment to recover the experiences of people in the past. At Phillips Academy and Harvard College, his first interest was in American history. -

welcome here are few cities in the United States where members of the OAH prefer to meet more than the City by the Bay. San Francisco as a conference Tcity or as a tourist destination is hard to beat—it has something for every visitor. Our 2013 program, likewise, has something for every OAH conferee. The program committee, so ably cochaired by Tom Guglielmo and Erika Lee, assembled sessions, panels, workshops, and plenaries that link to nearly every subfield of American history. A large number link directly to the conference theme of “Entangled Histories,” which explores the complexities, intersections, and tensions that characterize so much of US history. Although we cannot promise ideal California weather in April, we can promise an engaging and rich intellectual experience. Plenary sessions, featuring an outstanding cast of colleagues, will consider two different topics. The first, titled “Freedom Struggles”—in commemoration of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln 150 years ago—will address benchmark Linda A. Cicero / Stanford News Service developments in the long history of Americans’ pursuit of equality. A second plenary will focus on the topic of “corporations in American life,” a subject of enormous importance to the history of industrial capitalism in the United States. It is a topic with a contemporary resonance that matches its historical significance. Both plenary sessions reflect “entangled histories,” the first about race, in knowledge about the area; a bus tour of the Mission ideologies of difference, and power, and the other about District’s world-famous murals; or a must-see tour of the wealth, class, and power. -

CHARLES HOMER HASKINS PRIZE LECTURE FOR 2019 A Life of Learning Lynn Hunt ACLS OCCASIONAL PAPER, No. 76 The 2019 Charles Homer Haskins Prize Lecture was presented at the ACLS Annual Meeting in New York, New York on April 26, 2019. © 2019 by Lynn Hunt CONTENTS On Charles Homer Haskins iv Haskins Prize Lecturers v On Lynn Hunt vi Introduction vii by Pauline Yu A Life of Learning 1 by Lynn Hunt ON CHARLES HOMER HASKINS Charles Homer Haskins (1870–1937), for whom the ACLS lecture series is named, organized the founding of the American Council of Learned Societies in 1919 and served as its first chairman from 1920 to 1926. He received a PhD in history from Johns Hopkins University at the age of 20. Appointed an instructor at the Univer- sity of Wisconsin, Haskins became a full professor in two years. After 12 years there, he moved to Harvard University, where he served as dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences from 1908 to 1924. At the time of his retirement in 1931, he was the Henry Charles Lea Professor of Medieval History. A close advisor to President Woodrow Wilson (whom he had met at Johns Hop- kins), Haskins attended the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 as chief of the Division of Western Europe of the American Commis- sion to Negotiate Peace. He served as president of the American Historical Association in 1922, and was a founder and the second president of the Medieval Academy of America in 1926–27. A great American teacher, Haskins also did much to establish the reputation of American scholarship abroad. -

This course seeks to determine the validity of his remark. Readings Each week everyone will read both the common "core'' assignment and a unique "secondary reading." I will assign the secondary readings for the first week; thereafter, each individual will be free to choose the work that most interests him/her, except that the liberty of some "volunteers" may be sacrificed to ensure that interpretive diversity prevails. All books assigned as core readings are available for purchase at the University Book Store (with the exception of Gary Nash, Race and Revolution) and have also been placed on three-hour reserve at the State Historical Library for the semester. The secondary readings will be available on three day reserve at the Library. (A few non-circulating journals live in the Main Reading Room at the Library, and a few readings also needed by undergraduates will be on three-hour reserve). Written Assignments You will write three papers, 7- 8 pages, typed, double-spaced. You may choose which 2 of the first 4 papers to attempt; everyone must write the final essay. The paper topics are intended to cover the readings most recently covered, but I encourage you to bring in material from throughout the course (and elsewhere, if you can).
