Due to market price fluctuations on wines, please contact us for all quotes. 1 Catalogue_WWS_Catalogue_WWS 05/05/17 12:55 Page2 CHAMPAGNE "Champagne only comes from champagne" This is a sparkling wine protected with an AOC (Appelation d’Origine Contrôlée), produced in four mains areas (Montagne de Reims, The Côte des Blancs, The Vallée de La Marne and The Côte des Bars). It lies some 150 kilometres to the east of Paris, spreading across 320 villages ("crus"). There are three main grapes varieties used in the making of champagne : The Chardonnay (white skinned), The Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier (both red skinned). The wine is produced according to the Champagne method, sometimes called the traditional method, which consists mainly of a double fermentation of the must, the first in vats, the second in the bottle itself, in the cellar. Based on this, we can define champagne and classified it into categories : Blanc de Blancs will be made with only white-skinned grape, Blanc de Noirs will be made with red-skinned grape, and Rosé will be made by blending red and white grapes (it is the only one in Europe). You will find different kind of champagne too, based on the added sugar Brut Nature (or Zero) don’t have sugar added, Extra Brut is very dry, Brut is very dry to dry and Sec is medium dry. Non-vintage Champagne is traditionally blended from grapes grown in different years (= different vintages), but they may also combine wines from a whole range of crus and varietals – it all depends on the style of Champagne. Non-vintage blends are the means to achieve a consistent house style regardless of vintage variability. The house style is unique to each brand of Champagne. Vintage Champagne is blended from the wines of a single "millésime" : a single outstanding year that the individual producer chooses to declare as a vintage. Vintage Champagne wines bear all the hallmarks of their outstanding years. All its peculiarities make the prestige of the Champagne and its status of king of the bubbles. One night rarely defines a vintage; many of the great vineyards are planted in low risk areas and so damage was minimal. Through the rest of the season the more important weather events did not diminish the whole; a dry and fresh enough July and August was ideal for fruit set and development; rains in the first half of September were, by and large early enough to allow harvesting during the dry days following 20 th . These served to encourage growers to be patient before picking especially Cabernet Sauvignon at the end of the month. The best wines are the Cabernet dominated Medocs, often Saint Estephe. What’s it like? Weather stats suggest similarities to 2009, 2012 and 2014. Clearly there isn’t the ripeness of 2009, but there is the class and there is more poise and balance. The consensus seems to be 2014 with a few more horse power. That goes for right bank too where the vineyards on the plateau looked very healthy indeed in September. What’s best? Ask a good, honest wine merchant; it’s a year to focus on the few very good wines that are out there, and they need finding. The best have not been pressed to perdition, nor picked in the pouring rain. Selection of the best fruit is one important key to quality nowadays. Go with a winery that is prepared to sacrifice the average in order to stay the best.

    THE 1er GRAND CRU CLASSÉ (B) WINES OF ST EMILION A TASTING AT ROBERSON WINE THURSDAY NOVEMBER 20th 2008 ST EMILION THE PLACE ST EMILION The beau�ful town and UNESCO world heritage site of St Emilion gives its name to one of the wine world’s most lauded (set of) appella�ons. Situated on the right bank of the Dordogne River, the town is located high on an escapment overlooking the river to the south, Pomerol to the west and the Cotes and other satellite appella�ons (Lussac-St-Emilion and Cotes de Cas�llon etc) on the plains to the north. This large area is fascina�ngly diverse, both in terms of the terroir and the quality of the wines produced across the commune. Merlot is the common denominator for the vast majority of estates, with the variety thriving in the clay rich soils of the region. Cabernet Franc also fares very well and tends to overshadow its more illustrious offspring, Cabernet Sauvignon, which is more at home on the other side of the river. St Emilion has been something of a ba�leground for the terroir debate over recent years. It is a commune that is blessed with a number of dis�nct soil types and topographies, but was also the birthplace of ‘les Ga- ragistes’, a movement that used �ny yields, modern winemaking techniques and lots of new oak to produce wines of class and concentra�on from unheralded vineyard sites. While the debate s�ll rages on the importance of terroir, it is seen by many to be far from coincidental that the top performing estates are situated in the prime loca�ons.

  • Legendary Daumas Gassac Launches Vintages for 2018
    March 2018 France’s legendary winery Mas de Daumas Gassac is expanding its presence in Asia and is releasing its latest vintages for 2018. Despite its modest designation and location in the South of France, in the Languedoc commune of Aniane, the Mas de Daumas Gassac vineyard is universally revered for its outstanding red and white wines. Out of its 2016 vintage, only 7,500 cases were produced, with some set to be released in spring 2018. The family winery, founded by Véronique and Aimé Guibert – and now run by their four sons Samuel, Gaël, Roman and Basile – has single-handedly rewritten the history of winemaking for the region of Languedoc. Known for a century as a place where only cheap table wines were produced, the Guiberts were instrumental in showing that this region in the south of France could produce world-class wines. For 2018, the winery is presenting its Red Grand Vin 2016, produced with the estate’s new press which has allowed for unparalleled extraction. This wine, produced from 40-year-old vines, has a high freshness, and tastes of ripe fruits such as cassis. To be drunk while young, this is an explosive vintage not to be missed. The estate is renowned for its whites and for 2018, it is releasing its White Grand Vin 2016. It features the Mas de Daumas Gassac white signature: exotic fruits and light sap notes; a fresh finish and a dash of saltiness. This well- carved profile is made up of 8.1% rare grape varieties. Mas de Daumas Gassac’s wines are grown on a “magic” terroir strikingly similar to the best of Burgundy, and cool microclimate gifting finesse and complexity to its vintages.
