  • Legendary Daumas Gassac Launches Vintages for 2018
March 2018 France’s legendary winery Mas de Daumas Gassac is expanding its presence in Asia and is releasing its latest vintages for 2018. Despite its modest designation and location in the South of France, in the Languedoc commune of Aniane, the Mas de Daumas Gassac vineyard is universally revered for its outstanding red and white wines. Out of its 2016 vintage, only 7,500 cases were produced, with some set to be released in spring 2018. The family winery, founded by Véronique and Aimé Guibert – and now run by their four sons Samuel, Gaël, Roman and Basile – has single-handedly rewritten the history of winemaking for the region of Languedoc. Known for a century as a place where only cheap table wines were produced, the Guiberts were instrumental in showing that this region in the south of France could produce world-class wines. For 2018, the winery is presenting its Red Grand Vin 2016, produced with the estate’s new press which has allowed for unparalleled extraction. This wine, produced from 40-year-old vines, has a high freshness, and tastes of ripe fruits such as cassis. To be drunk while young, this is an explosive vintage not to be missed. The estate is renowned for its whites and for 2018, it is releasing its White Grand Vin 2016. It features the Mas de Daumas Gassac white signature: exotic fruits and light sap notes; a fresh finish and a dash of saltiness. This well- carved profile is made up of 8.1% rare grape varieties. Mas de Daumas Gassac’s wines are grown on a “magic” terroir strikingly similar to the best of Burgundy, and cool microclimate gifting finesse and complexity to its vintages.

The last decade has seen all of that change, and what was once the land of plonk is now one of the most exciting regions in the world of wine, with innovative vignerons producing both artisanal limited production cuvées and branded wines of vastly improved quality. The array of styles from this fascinating region offers wonderful diversity for the enthusiast - from dry and mineral white wines through crisp rosés to deep, structured red wines and on to unctuous sweet and fortified wines.

  • Wine Paper – Copie
Abstract We study whether quality assessments made by wine experts and by consumers (based on prices obtained at auction between 1980 and 1992), can be explained by variables describing endowments (land characteristics, exposures of vineyards) and technologies (from grape varieties and picking, to bottled wines). However, since technological choices are likely to depend on endowments, the effects can only be identified using an instrumental variables approach. We show that technological choices affect quality much more than natural endowments, the effect of which is negligible.* 1. Introduction Winemaking cannot be envisaged unless very specific weather conditions prevail. But this is obviously not sufficient, since winemaking also involves a complex technology that needs natural endowments which can hardly be modified (land, slopes' exposure, other endowments, summarized by what is often called "terroir"), inputs that take 20 to 30 years before producing good quality outputs (vines), manual operations (picking), mechanical operations (crushing, racking), chemical processes (during fermentation) and specific storage conditions once the wine is bottled. There is little that can be done to correct an error in one of the various and delicate steps which extend over several years for every vintage, though nowadays it is said that a good chemist can make miracles. Wine is also the subject of many legends and production secrets. Wine tasting adds to this aura of mystery with its esoteric vocabulary describing perfumes and the harmony of a wine. The influence of weather has been the subject of several studies, which consistently show that rain is needed during the winter season, while dry weather is good during the growing season and when grapes are picked.
