Bordeaux Futures Offering Bordeaux Futures Offering 2017 & 2018 Vintages It has been some time since we have offered Bordeaux Futures, but the quality of fruit from the upcoming 2018 vintage is too special to pass up. Simply put, this offer is intended to give you the absolute best pricing we can give on some of the best wines made in this vintage. I was fortunate to visit the left and right banks just before harvest in 2018 and there was plenty of excitement in the air with beautiful bunches of fruit hanging on both sides of the Gironde River. The vintage was warm with a long dry period punctuated by just enough rainfall to keep the vines safe from hydric stress and achieve ideal ripeness with exquisitely balanced phenolic properties. It will rank among the top Bordeaux vintages in history with some of the best wines ever produced from these châteaus. We’re also offering some highly curated picks from the 2017 vintage, which, while not as perfect as the 2018 vintage, produced strong wines with great balance and early-drinking appeal. Tony’s picks in this vintage are the perfect combination of value and quality and should not be missed. While one never needs an excuse to buy wine, there are a number of reasons to invest in these Bordeauxs. Have kids born in 2017 or 2018? Having these stored in anticipation of their 21st birthday would be an incredible way to cheers to the milestone. Get married? These wines will be a way to mark the occasion for many years to come, growing, evolving, and maturing along with you. Graduations, Celebrations, and many other milestones could be perfectly commemorated with these wines. Thirsty yet? Please read on and comb through the wines we are offering. If you have questions, feel free to reach out to me, [email protected], or let’s set up a time to discuss the wines that pique your curiosity. I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers, Matthew Anderson General Manager Bin 604 Saint-Estèphe Château Lilian Ladouys 2018 Bottle $30.99, Case $371.88 “The wine will see 12 months aging in 35% new and 65% two-year-old barriques. The blend is 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, and it has 14.41% alcohol. From the lieu-dit Blanquet and with a deep purple-black color, the 2018 Lilian Ladouys gives up wonderfully spicy black fruit preserves notions: plum preserves, crème de cassis and blueberry with hints of exotic spices, menthol and violets. Medium to full-bodied, firm and fine-grained in the mouth, it has layer upon layer of rich, spicy black fruits with a lift to the finish.”(90-92 pts. Lisa Perrotti, Wine Advocate) Saint Julien Château Lalande Borie St. Julien 2018 Bottle $39.99, Case $479.80 “The 2018 Lalande-Borie is pliant, supple and wonderfully inviting. Bright floral notes perk up the red/purplish berry fruit in a silky, succulent Saint-Julien that will drink well right out of the gate. In the glass, the 2018 is heady and alluring, and yet it retains its classic mid-weight personality and structure. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine. The blend is 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon.” (90-92 pts. Antonio Galloni, Vinous) Château Ducru-Beaucaillou St. Julien 2018 Bottle $235, Case $2820 “Very deep purple-black in color, it prances out of the glass with flamboyant, showy scents of cinnamon stick, wilted roses, star anise, fallen leaves and Ceylon tea with a core of blackcurrant cordial, black cherry compote, violets, chocolate mint and espresso plus a waft of crushed rocks. Full-bodied, opulent and decadently fruited with layer upon layer of black/blue fruit and floral nuances, it has an exquisitely ripe, fine-grained frame and fantastic freshness supporting the multifaceted, beguiling fruit, finishing with tons of fragrant flowers and mineral sparks. At once beautifully elegant and wonderfully bold.” (97-99 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate) Château Léoville Poyferré 2017 Bottle $96.99, Case $1163.88 “The 2017 Léoville Poyferré is very deep purple-black in color with super intense notes of freshly crushed black currants, wild blueberries and Sichuan pepper with hints of lavender, baking spices and wood smoke. The palate is medium- bodied, firm and grainy with restrained, understated fruit and a long, mineral-laced finish.” (93-95 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate) Château Léoville Poyferré 2018 Bottle $115, Case $1380 “Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Léoville Poyferré begins sporting a veil of cedar, opening out to reveal profound notions of crème de cassis, warm kirsch, Black Forest cake and Indian spices plus hints of char-grilled meats and Sichuan pepper. Full-bodied and built like a brick house, the taut, muscular black fruit has a solid frame of firm, ripe tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long with loads of savory nuances. Aging is anticipated to be for 18 months in barriques, 80% new. The current blend is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.” (94-96+ pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate) Château Saint Pierre 2018 Bottle $76.99, Case $923.88 “A powerful, virile wine, the 2018 Saint-Pierre is also one of the highlights of the vintage. Black cherry, graphite, smoke, leather, menthol, violet and spice meld together in a brooding, tannic Saint-Julien that is going to need a bit of time to truly come into its own. Saint-Pierre is muscular, massively tannic and forbidding, and yet there is a ton of fruit behind all of that structure. Cabernet Sauvignon features heavily in the blend, and that comes through in the wine’s flavor profile and overall feel. Readers will have to be patient. I can’t wait to taste it from bottle. The 2018 is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot.” (92-95 pts. Antonio Galloni, Vinous) Château Gloria 2018 Bottle $55.99, Case $671.88 “Gloria is once again fabulous. Brisk and vibrant, the 2018 has so much to offer. The 2018 is a bit more linear than other recent vintages (such as the 2016) but it nevertheless has a lot to offer. Bright red cherry, cedar, tobacco, spice and floral notes pulse with tremendous energy. The tannins need a few years in bottle to unwind, but there is so much to look forward to. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.” (91-94 pts. Antonio Galloni, Vinous) Château Gloria 2017 Bottle $48.99, Case $587.88 “The 2017 Gloria, tasted from a new barrel though the final blend will include 50% new oak and the remainder one-year old, has a straightforward but pure bouquet with blackberry, briary and cedar aromas accompanied by a distant whiff off the estuary. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, crisp acidity, a little “brittle” in the mouth, but quite precise towards the finish.”(89-92 pts. Antonio Galloni, Vinous) Margaux Château Labégorce Margaux 2018 Bottle $41.99, Case $503.88 Tony Foreman Featured Selection “Deep purple-black colored, the 2018 Labégorce is a little subdued by cedar to begin, giving way to a core of plum preserves, Black Forest cake and Indian spices with wafts of garrigue and lavender. Full, concentrated and laden with black fruit preserves, it has an approachable frame of firm, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on a peppery note.” (91-93 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate) Château Marquis d’Alesme Becker Margaux 2017 Bottle $49.99, Case $599.88 “Blended of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Marquis d’Alesme Becker is very deep purple-black in color with lovely baked plums, black forest cake and tapenade notes with suggestions of grilled meat and wild thyme. The palate is medium-bodied and intense with very firm, grainy tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing with great length and depth.” (92-94 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate) Château Marquis d’Alesme Becker 2018 Bottle $56.99, Case $683.88 Tony Foreman Featured Selection “Deep purple-black in color, it leaps from the glass with bold, expressive black cherries, warm plums, crème de cassis and red roses scents with touches of baking spices, potpourri and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, rich and opulent, it completely fills the palate with hedonic black fruit preserves and spices, framed by firm, velvety tannins and finishing with fantastic length.” (92-95 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate) Château Rauzan-Ségla 2017 Bottle $93.99, Case $1127.88 “Composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot and sporting a deep garnet-purple color, the 2017 Rauzan-Ségla (Rausan-Ségla) has a profound nose of cassis, warm blackberries and black plums with touches of baking spices, violets, mocha and smoke plus a waft of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied with a great core of sustained, energetic black fruit, a frame of fine-grained tannins and a lively backbone, it finishes with great length.” (94-96 pts. Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate) Château Rauzan-Ségla 2018 Bottle $128, Case $1536 “Deep purple-black in color, it comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant notes of warm plums, crème de cassis, Black Forest cake and candied violets with hints of mocha, Indian spices and fragrant earth plus a waft of crushed rocks. Full-bodied, multi-layered and sporting a lot of freshness and tension in the mouth in spite of all its decadent perfumed black fruits, it has a firm, finely grained frame and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant.

Grape Variety 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Semillon Appellation Pessac-Léognan Classification Cru Classe de Graves in 1959 Website http://www.domainedechevalier.com/ General Info The owners of Domaine de Chevalier, the Bernard family, have a long history dating all the way back to the 1155! Documents are available stating that the Count of Angoulême awarded the Bordeaux wine property to Chasteau-Bernard for his for his valour in battle against the English. Domaine de Chevalier in the Graves/Pessac Leognan, appellation, was purchased in 1865 by Arnaud Ricard and his son Jean the Bernard family for 33,000 francs. At the time, the Ricards family were familiar with the Bordeaux wine trade as they worked as coopers, producing some of the best barrels used by many of the best chateau. In 1865, the estate began selling their wine under the Gascon name of “Chivaley”. In those days, the 44-hectare property was used for mostly food crops and breeding animals. While there was a tiny Bordeaux wine making operation at the estate, it was not the main interest of the property. Shortly after the elder Ricard passed away, the son discovered the outstanding potential of the terroir and soil at Domaine de Chevalier and transformed it into a full-time vineyard. The name was changed from “Chivaley” to the French “Chevalier”. When Jean Ricard died, his son-in-law, Gabriel Beaumartin, took over and managed Domaine de Chevalier for the next 4 decades.

  • Handford Wines Bordeaux En Primeur 2017 Offer “Frosty Reception
Pebbles of Chateau Haut Brion Handford Wines Bordeaux En Primeur 2017 Offer “Frosty reception. Standing ovation” Page 1 of 16 Introduction Frost damage in April made the headlines. One night rarely defines a vintage; many of the great vineyards are planted in low risk areas and so damage was minimal. Through the rest of the season the more important weather events did not diminish the whole; a dry and fresh enough July and August was ideal for fruit set and development; rains in the first half of September were, by and large early enough to allow harvesting during the dry days following 20 th . These served to encourage growers to be patient before picking especially Cabernet Sauvignon at the end of the month. The best wines are the Cabernet dominated Medocs, often Saint Estephe. What’s it like? Weather stats suggest similarities to 2009, 2012 and 2014. Clearly there isn’t the ripeness of 2009, but there is the class and there is more poise and balance. The consensus seems to be 2014 with a few more horse power. That goes for right bank too where the vineyards on the plateau looked very healthy indeed in September. What’s best? Ask a good, honest wine merchant; it’s a year to focus on the few very good wines that are out there, and they need finding. The best have not been pressed to perdition, nor picked in the pouring rain. Selection of the best fruit is one important key to quality nowadays. Go with a winery that is prepared to sacrifice the average in order to stay the best.

  • Wines of St Emilion Tasting
THE 1er GRAND CRU CLASSÉ (B) WINES OF ST EMILION A TASTING AT ROBERSON WINE THURSDAY NOVEMBER 20th 2008 ST EMILION THE PLACE ST EMILION The beauful town and UNESCO world heritage site of St Emilion gives its name to one of the wine world’s most lauded (set of) appellaons. Situated on the right bank of the Dordogne River, the town is located high on an escapment overlooking the river to the south, Pomerol to the west and the Cotes and other satellite appellaons (Lussac-St-Emilion and Cotes de Casllon etc) on the plains to the north. This large area is fascinangly diverse, both in terms of the terroir and the quality of the wines produced across the commune. Merlot is the common denominator for the vast majority of estates, with the variety thriving in the clay rich soils of the region. Cabernet Franc also fares very well and tends to overshadow its more illustrious offspring, Cabernet Sauvignon, which is more at home on the other side of the river. St Emilion has been something of a baleground for the terroir debate over recent years. It is a commune that is blessed with a number of disnct soil types and topographies, but was also the birthplace of ‘les Ga- ragistes’, a movement that used ny yields, modern winemaking techniques and lots of new oak to produce wines of class and concentraon from unheralded vineyard sites. While the debate sll rages on the importance of terroir, it is seen by many to be far from coincidental that the top performing estates are situated in the prime locaons.

Clos Fourtet 2012 CSPC# 753467 750mlx12 14.0% alc./vol. Grape Variety 86% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc Appellation St. Emilion Classification First Growth B. Premier Grand Cru Classe B in 2006 Website http://www.closfourtet.com/ General Info Thanks to the geology of the Saint-Emilion plateau (chalk overlaid with aeolian sand), its fine wines boast a unique reputation, and Clos Fourtet, occupying a prime site, is among one of Saint-Emilion's oldest and most renowned estates. Medium in size (20 ha of vineyard), Clos Fourtet is built around an authentic private residence dating from the end of the Ancien Regime and itself stands at the very gates of the medieval city. It was in fact built over magnificent underground quarries where its wines are aged both in barrel and in bottle. The site itself is one of those most frequently visited and greatly admired. Throughout the 18th century, the Rulleau and de Carles families contributed largely to its growing renown, fully exploiting the land's potential. Here, thanks to the thin layer of arable soil, vines root easily, yet yield little, this " stress " being a fundamental prerequisite for the production of great wines. An exceptional terroir, the primary condition for production of a very great wine, associated with judiciously selected grape varieties cultivated in the time-honored fashion, traditional winemaking controlled by the latest techniques and finally aging in new barrels, ensure that Clos Fourtet takes its rightful place among the most highly esteemed growths in the appellation and in the region. In 1949, the Lurton family bought the château.

All page numbers reference the 2020 version. Note: Many of our regional wine maps have been updated. The new maps are available on SWE’s blog, Wine, Wit, and Wisdom, at the following address: http://winewitandwisdomswe.com/wine-spirits- maps/swe-wine-maps-2021/ Page 15: The third paragraph under the heading “TCA” has been updated to read as follows: TCA is highly persistent. If it saturates any part of a winery’s environment (barrels, cardboard boxes, or even the winery’s walls), it can even be transferred into wines that are sealed with screw caps or artificial corks. Thankfully, recent technological breakthroughs have shown promise, and some cork producers are predicting the eradication of cork taint in the next few years. In the meantime, while most industry experts agree that the incidence of cork taint has fallen in recent years, an exact figure has not been agreed upon. Current reports of cork taint vary widely, from a low of 1% to a high of 8% of the bottles produced each year. Page 16: the entry for Geranium fault was updated to read as follows: Geranium fault: An odor resembling crushed geranium leaves (which can be overwhelming); normally caused by the metabolism of sorbic acid (derived from potassium sorbate, a preservative) via lactic acid bacteria (as used for malolactic fermentation) Page 22: the entry under the heading “clone” was updated to read as follows: In commercial viticulture, virtually all grape varieties are reproduced via vegetative propagation.
