The Proposed Kyrkohandbok for the Church of Sweden Viewed from the Perspective of the Post-Vatican II Ecumenical Liturgical Convergence
The Proposed Kyrkohandbok for the Church of Sweden Viewed From the Perspective of the Post-Vatican II Ecumenical Liturgical Convergence frank c. senn The Church of Sweden has joined other Western Christian Churches in developing new liturgical resources for the twenty-first century. I have been asked to review the proposed Kyrkohandbok för Svenska kyrkan (HBF = “Handboksförslag”) from the perspective of a Luth- eran liturgist outside the Church of Sweden who nevertheless knows something about the Swedish liturgical tradition. One can truly evaluate worship only from the “inside” – that is, as a participant. I have not experienced liturgy in a Swedish parish since Advent 2001. But over a period from 1973 to 2001, during which I visited Sweden five times and always attended liturgies, I did experience changes in the approach to liturgical performance from a situation in which worship was highly regulated in all its details to a situation in which more flexibility was granted to the priest (presiding minister) to design worship for the actual worshiping community. This flexibility was evident in the provision of six orders of worship in Den svenska kyrkohandboken (HB 1986) –three with communion and three without communion.1 This complexity has been simplified in the proposed HBF. My general observation is that the proposed HBF builds on the HB 1986 just as Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW 2006) built on 1 Several editions of HB 1986 exist, the latest, lightly revised, being from 2010. It is divided in two parts, of which the first contains the various orders for worship and for baptism, confession, confirmation, marriage and burial, while the second contains the orders for ordination, sending, reception and for the consecration of a church. -

Faith of the Fathers, the Faith for the Future: the Faith Today? .............................. page 35 1 Daniel Alvunger: “Captive to Caesar” – Church Politics in Sweden in the 20th Century, Particularly between the Years 1930-1973 On 21st March 1973, the social-democrat government published its decision that there would be no proposition to change relations between the Church of Sweden and the state. This retreat by the government marked the failure of the long and laborious process of investigations aimed at creating a new relationship between the church and the state in Sweden. In this talk, I will argue that the failure to reach an agreement in 1973 can also be seen as a successful result of social-democrat church policy in the period following the Second World War. During the 20th century in Sweden, the SAP (Sveriges Socialdemokratiska Arbetareparti, the Swedish Social-Democrat Labour Party) can truly be called “Caesar”. This party was the majority party for most of the 1900s and was in government during the years 1932-1976, 1982-1991 and from 1994 onwards. -

Valok. Tenhovaara Gummerus Kirjapaino Oy Jyväskylä 2008 Abstract This is an historical study of the relationship between the Church of Eng- land and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland during the archi- episcopate of Aleksi Lehtonen between 1945 and 1951. I have studied the relations of the churches from three perspectives: ecumenical; church politics; and political. The period begins with the aftermath of the visit of the Rev. H.M. Waddams to Finland in December 1944, and ends with the death of Archbishop Lehtonen at Easter 1951. The rhythm for the development of relations was set by the various visits between the churches. These highlight the development of relations from Waddams’ pro-Soviet agenda at the beginning of the period to the diametrically opposed attitude of Church of England visitors after the be- ginning of the Cold War. Official Church of England visitors to Finland were met by the highest political leadership alongside church leaders. The Finnish Church sought to use good relations with the Church of England as a means of gaining support and understanding for church and nation against the perceived Soviet threat, especially during the Finnish ”years of danger” from 1944 to 1948. -
